China Turns The Screw And Continues To Severely Degrade US Military Capabilities

earths. So much so that it even spurred

President Trump to even seek to go as

far as seize Greenland in order to try

to even the odds. But despite all the

bloiating rhetoric from the US on how

everything is fine and the issue is not

as debilitating as some analysts have

led on, a new and very interesting story

has emerged that validates nearly

0:38

everything we have said could come to

0:40

pass. And that story or event is what

0:43

we're going to dive into today.

Yeah, absolutely. But it's first first

worth reiterating

0:51

that China of course put sanctions on

0:54

the United States in terms of their

0:57

procurement of rare earth imports.

And yes, people will always say rare

earths are not rare. All right, that's

true. But China has a very strong hand

in terms of rare earth supply chains

because it accounts for about 90% of

1:16

global rare earth uh refining capacity

1:20

and about 95%

1:22

of permanent magnet production.

That gives Beijing an enormous leverage

1:29

over all the downstream industries

1:33

and rare earth elements and magnets are

1:36

essential in components for the United

1:38

States because well that's what we're

1:40

speaking about in precisiong guided

1:42

missiles in fighter aircraft radar

1:46

systems satellite communications

1:50

and also even electric motors which will

1:52

be used in for example aerospace base

1:56

applications

1:57

and it's definitely the case that

1:59

certain materials such as uh there are

2:03

what are called samarium cobalt magnets

2:07

are increasing being very difficult for

2:09

the United States companies to procure

2:13

and they're especially important for

2:15

things like high temperature defense

2:16

applications

2:18

with US businesses actually admitting

2:23

that for them some critical minerals

2:25

from China are nearly unobtainable now

2:30

under current restrictions.

Now obviously we have to temper this a

2:35

little bit with the with the of course

2:37

no one has all the evidence about US

2:41

military operations, US deployments,

2:43

combat readiness and what the lack of

2:46

access to rare earths is in a degrading

2:50

capacity in this regard. But it's

2:52

absolutely clear that this is impacting

2:56

supply chain resilience, production

2:58

times for US defense systems, for

3:02

procurement costs, inventory management,

3:05

and obviously any stockpiling

3:07

requirements.

And it's very clear that China is

3:11

targeting specific US companies. It's

3:15

imposing export licensing requirements.

I mean, and of course, there is an

3:20

attempt to downplay the significance of

3:24

this as though well, it's not a big

3:26

problem, but it is exposing the United

3:29

States to short, medium, long-term

3:31

vulnerability

3:33

because the United States is effectively

3:36

dependent on China for a whole raft of

3:39

rare earth processed materials.

3:43

And if you look back in recent years

3:46

since the the start of 2020,

3:49

China accounts for probably 75% of US

3:53

imports of rare earth compounds and

3:56

metals.

3:57

And obviously for the United States to

attempt to build alternative supply

4:02

chain, bearing in mind it needs to be

4:04

refined, is going to take many, many

4:08

years. not something, you know, you can

4:10

just flip a light switch and say, "Oh,

4:14

you know, we've dealt with this

4:15

problem." Now, China has obviously in

4:19

recent years targeted US companies in

4:22

terms of an export control list, which

4:25

means they've prohibited exports of

4:27

Chinese dual items, meaning something

4:31

that will be utilized for civilian and

4:33

military applications. and that's

4:35

affected a whole raft of defense and

4:38

technology companies. But China's also

4:41

barred nearly 50 US companies from

4:44

Chinese government procurement

4:46

and that includes major defense

4:48

contractors like Loheed, Raian, etc.,

4:51

etc.

I mean, so you can get an an

4:55

understanding that the China has really

4:58

taken the the the US to task over this

and made it very abundantly clear that

5:04

they were going to put were going to

5:06

throttle the US's military capability to

5:09

produce anything. Now I'll give way to

kind of then we'll get into the

5:13

specifics of certain developments but I

5:16

think it's very important that people

5:18

understand the background to this and

5:20

why it is a big problem for the United

5:23

States. It's not something that uh you

5:25

can trivialize and sweep under the

5:27

carpet and imagine it's not an issue.

>> Yeah. And I one of the things I want to

emphasize here is the rare earths are

really the the uh restrictions on rare

5:39

earths and especially and I want to put

5:43

absolute emphasis on this processed rare

earths as you pointed out uh rare earths

you can find them just off your

5:51

shoreline. Uh many different types

5:54

they're not that rare. some are and

5:57

China has a uh has a large uh control

over those specific ones that are used

for uh silicon uh for you know

6:07

electronics and magnets and and these

6:10

type of things and this is where it's

6:11

going to come into play here in just a

6:13

moment but I think the one thing you

6:16

have to take a look at is how has the US

6:18

been responding well the US can't uh

6:21

force China to do anything um they first

6:25

tried tried to do the tit fortat

6:27

sanction game and China just went higher

6:29

and and more than the US did. So Trump

6:32

had to back down. Then like I mentioned

6:35

in the intro

6:38

uh Trump started thinking about seizing

6:40

and conquering uh

6:43

other sovereign uh locations like

6:46

Greenland especially and going to Africa

6:48

or going to the to Southeast Asia etc.

and seizing control over uh these type

6:55

of facilities to get rare earths. Canada

6:59

uh Canada has been fighting back, but

that's another place where they can try

to get this. But in the end, the other

thing that's important is it's going to

7:07

take them at least a decade to be able

7:09

to build the facilities to be able to

7:11

process these rare earths. It's a very

7:14

toxic, it's a very uh long process to be

7:19

able to do this. and most US industries

7:22

and their regulatory bodies don't allow

7:25

them to go ahead and put in these type

7:27

of facilities.

So with that being said, we're starting

to see

7:34

uh cracks in the uh entire industrial

7:38

base and primarily in the military. So

7:41

much so that uh the Trump administration

7:43

also came out with this uh convoluted

7:47

statement that they're going to start

7:50

telling automobile uh industries to

7:54

start making military product uh

7:56

products and and the like. And it's this

military uh armaments that has really

8:04

fallen through the cracks which leads us

8:07

to what we're going to talk about now.

Yeah, it's worth kind of reiterating

that China's also targeting US companies

8:16

who want to establish domestic rare

8:18

earth mining and processing

8:20

capabilities.

I mean, and this comes in response when

the Pentagon made this decision to add

8:26

all these dozens of Chinese companies

8:29

and that relates to technology and

8:32

electric vehicles to a list of companies

8:34

they said has links to the Chinese

8:37

military. So every time the US thinks

8:40

they're going to retaliate, China comes

8:42

out and turns the screw even more. Now,

what's interesting in this regard is

8:47

there's reports that the US Marine Corps

8:50

had to accept six new F35B

8:55

fighters without noting their primary

8:59

radar systems installed. Can you imagine

being in receipt of a stealth fighter

9:05

without a radar system? I mean it

9:07

beggars belief and why has this

9:09

happened? Because there was delays in

9:11

the delivery of of the obviously the

9:16

APG85

9:17

radar. Now people can come draw their

9:20

own conclusions. The logic of this is

that they don't have the components to

9:26

obviously manufacture that radar. you

9:28

would logically think that relates to a

9:31

lack of access to processed

9:35

rare earth that would be needed to be

9:37

included

9:38

in in this APG85 radar. Now, of course,

obviously, if you're going to build be

9:48

these aircraft without that, the

9:50

question should be

9:53

why would anyone accept an aircraft

9:55

without radars? I mean, why are you

9:58

going to deliver aircraft rather than

halt production and wait for the radars?

Well, for me, the there's two main

reasons. Partly, it's just optics and

perception that it isn't a problem. And

yes, the jets can be used for basic

10:14

pilot training and flight operations,

10:17

but the one thing they can't be used for

10:20

is any combat missions. Well, that's

10:22

debatable anyway. combat training or any

10:24

full operational employment as as a

10:28

frontline fighter. So, it's like

10:31

cosmetically saying, "Well, we've taken

10:33

delivery of them." Oh, so it's not

10:35

really a problem. But I mean, what

10:38

exactly do you want an F-35 for? You

10:41

spend all that money to do some basic

10:43

pilot training? Absolutely not. But

10:46

again is indicative and a clear example

10:49

of what happens when you don't have

10:52

access to rare earth. Now obviously

there's ongoing problems as we know with

10:58

regards to the F-35 anyway. I mean and

yes these new radar systems do require

11:05

additional functionality.

Well if you haven't got the capability

11:09

to install them then the qu then that

11:12

raises a whole set of different

11:14

questions. But if you look back to um a

11:19

US government accountability office

11:22

report, it actually found that only a

11:24

quarter or 25% of F-35 were actually

11:28

even mission capable in 2025. Now of

11:32

course there is disputes about that and

11:34

saying well that's not actually the

11:37

case. It's a lot higher. It's like 50%.

Now on that basis that's one very clear

11:44

example that China's rare earth

11:47

restrictions

11:48

uh have created supply chain

11:50

disruptions. They have increased

11:53

significant strategic risks for the US

11:56

military-industrial complex. I mean okay

11:59

there's going to be people who will

argue to the contrary that that's got

12:03

nothing to do with this.

I don't I think it's pretty obvious that

there is a link to a to restrictions on

12:11

processed Chinese rare earths.

>> Indeed. And you know, just to expand

upon this, I know I'm slightly going off

of the rare earth thing, but I want to

go ahead and since we're talking about

12:24

the emission capability of something

12:26

like the F-35, uh go into greater

12:29

examples. Uh the US is going full boore

into trying to build this AI program and

12:37

that's going to require a massive amount

12:38

of rare earths because it's going to

12:40

take uh nuclear, it's going to have to

12:43

expand the uh the grid. It's going to

12:45

have to expand a lot of different

12:47

functionality just to be able to put

12:49

these in in uh in into play. And the

12:53

other thing when you take a look at it

12:55

is uh most of the uh technology with the

12:59

United States they are far behind. I ran

across this uh recently where the F-35

13:08

is a gen 5 aircraft and right now the US

13:12

is estimated to be 3 to four years

13:14

behind China on development of sixth

13:17

generation fighters and if they don't

13:20

have the rare earth to be able to do

13:21

radars for their gen 5 right now they

13:25

are not going to be able to do anything

13:28

to keep up with the Joneses when it

13:30

comes to Gen 6. uh fighters or a a Star

13:34

Wars program that uh Trump wants to put

13:37

into play or any of these things where

13:39

we're starting to see fall through the

13:41

cracks. Uh go back just a few years

13:44

before uh Elon Musk and and SpaceX were

13:48

providing rocketry to put things into

13:51

orbit. The United States was relying

13:53

upon Russian uh uh rockets to be able to

13:57

do just basic things. So it's something

14:01

that the rare earths are an important

14:03

key part because they can't build

14:06

anything without them in the technology

14:08

sector. But it also is indicative of the

14:11

fact that the United States is falling

14:13

so far behind almost a decade behind in

14:16

many different areas that the rare

14:20

earths are almost the least problem that

14:23

they have.

14:26

even though it's a huge problem and you

14:28

know it's worth reiterating the point

14:32

that because there's been disruptions

14:35

due to Chinese restrictions on rare

14:38

earth and permanent magnets to supply

14:41

chains that you're going to get

14:42

production bottlenecks, delivery delays,

14:45

etc. and production stoppages. But

14:47

here's a a very good example.

Specifically,

the Chinese exports of itrium to the

14:56

United States declined over an 8th month

14:59

period from over 330 tons to around 15

tons because these control mechanisms

15:08

were put in place. Now, why is it

15:10

important? Well, have a guess what?

15:12

Surprise, surprise. It's used in radar

15:15

components, sensors,

15:17

aerospace applications. So, could that

15:20

be linked to what we've just discussed

15:22

about radar systems and F-35s? It's a

15:25

possibility. It's not definitive, but

15:28

you get the idea of just one example of

15:32

the problems that creates. And

15:35

obviously, this is putting huge pressure

15:37

on the United States's defense

15:39

industrial capacity.

I mean, and and and they're trying to

15:44

plug holes and it's not that easy to do

15:46

it and particularly not that easy in a

15:51

compressed time frame. Again, we're back

15:53

to this point. It takes years. It could

15:56

take a decade. Who knows? And of course,

Chinese restrictions is also contributed

to huge price increases for rare earth

16:05

materials outside China. There's reports

16:08

that prices have increased by as much as

16:11

400%.

So therefore, if you've got far higher

16:17

costs for buying raw materials or raw

16:20

components, that is going to massively

16:22

increase costs for defense

16:24

manufacturers.

And it also complicates long-term

16:28

procurement planning for weapon systems

16:31

that depend on these materials. So while

16:35

some people will like to downplay this

16:36

and say it's not significant, it is

16:39

hugely significant. It also undoubtedly

16:42

is

16:43

figured in the US's

16:46

capability to be able to support Ukraine

16:49

in the Ukraine war. They can sit there

16:51

and go, "We're not doing it." And

16:52

pretend to be all pious and look, we're

16:55

doing the right thing. But it could be

16:56

they're doing the right thing because

16:57

they've got no choice but to do the

16:59

right thing. The other thing is has it

impacted the US's capability to continue

with the war in Iran? Okay, there's a

17:08

whole bunch of other factors in this,

17:10

but it's part of the whole broad

17:13

perspective of what happens

17:16

uh with China and and what that's

17:18

demonstrated is China didn't have to

17:21

fire a single shot to cause mayhem for

17:24

for US military uh industrial complex

17:28

across all for all the reasons we've

17:29

just highlighted. And this is go ties in

with what we recently discussed about

17:35

how modern warfare has changed.

China is in a position to cause mayhem

17:40

for the United States. And I, you know,

17:42

I think what we've discussed today

17:44

eloquently highlights that fact.

>> So I guess where do we how do we

summarize this? Well, China's rare earth

export restrictions, it's uh magnet

17:59

restriction is definitely massively

impacting the US military readiness. It

prevents military operations. They've

18:08

exposed major vulnerabilities in US

18:10

defense supply chains by restricting

18:13

these critical uh minerals. They create

18:17

procurement bottlenecks. They've raised

18:19

costs. They've massively slowed future

18:22

production of advanced military systems.

18:25

And the US has got no uh resolution of

18:28

this anytime soon. this could still

18:31

easily be a problem in five years and

18:33

arguably even longer. And this is

18:36

extremely important in blunting the US's

18:39

capability to then say to places like

18:42

Europe, well, you need to buy our

18:44

military industrial hardware. And

18:45

they're going, well, okay, when are we

18:46

getting it? Well, I don't know when

18:48

you're getting it. Maybe 5 years, maybe

18:50

10 years. what you want us to pay for

18:52

stuff we're not having for years when

18:55

you know this is not going to fly and

18:57

therefore these countries going to start

looking at their own alternatives and

19:03

therefore that could have long-term

19:05

implications for the US's

19:07

military-industrial complex and that is

19:10

a huge story in of itself and with that

19:14
