okay, you need proof to believe
the government covered up these facts. A
conspiracy theory, like any other
theory, needs proof. That was the
first thing I asked myself: where is the
proof? The scientists who appear on
this program speak on camera
for the first
time in
1997. Scientists from the [unclear] recorded a
sound in the depths of the Pacific. It is of
organic origin but could not be
identified. They called it

bl. In the early 2000s, it was
proven that the Navy caused
whale strandings while
testing a
military sonar. For years, the Navy denied
responsibility for those strandings, but it
is a fact. In some of those
incidents, other bodies were reported to have been
washed ashore with the whales.
In 2004, two children were the first to
arrive at a mass stranding in
Washington state. They recorded it with their
cell phone. The children claimed to have seen
something that
day. They claimed to have seen a
body. The images you are about to
see have never been broadcast on
television.
They publicly declared having seen a
body. Later, they changed their
official statement, and the Navy took
the remains the children found. I
know. Because I was part of the team that
investigated that stranding, because I know what
the Navy did that day, and I think I know what they took.

A research team from
NOAA, the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration, based in SIAT,
quickly arrived on site to investigate the
cause of the
mass stranding. Dr. Brian McCormick, a respected
marine biologist, led the
investigation. In 2000, McCormick
published a landmark study
linking mass
whale strandings to military SAR tests
conducted by the
Navy. The study forced the suspension of the
program that same year.
Dr. McCormick and his team suspected
that the Navy had begun using
sonar again. Now, two members of that team
have agreed to speak on camera for the first time
about what
they say the Navy discovered but has never been made
public. I remember looking over of the
dunes and it was
incredible, I had never seen anything like it. My
name is Paul Roberson, I was a
research assistant to Dr. McCormick at the time. I had been
working
at
NOA for several years. When we arrived, a
storm was approaching and the wind was blowing so hard
that it swept everyone off the beach, so it
was just our team and the
Navy's. They cordoned off an area of the beach. There were
people in
biohazard suits or medical personnel, we weren't
sure. But that caught our
attention. Dr. McCormick was one of the first
scientists to find a relationship
between mass
whale strandings and the use of Navy sonar. He
was the most experienced in those cases,
but even he had never seen anything like it. I
am Rebecca Davis. I worked as a
field biologist at NOA in the
Marine Mammal Department. After
joining Dr. McCormick's team in
1999, we saw visible blood coming out of the
whales' ears. We had never
seen anything like it. All the whales were
bleeding from their
ears, which means they suffered some
kind of significant internal trauma.
We took many samples of We collected
tissue samples to study under a
microscope and determine the cause of
death. We
gathered everything as quickly as
we could, but Brian didn't want to leave. He wanted to
collect as many
samples as possible because he wanted to know what
the Navy was doing there.
When the Navy team
left, we approached the area where they had been
working, and they hadn't
opened any animals up or
performed autopsies. We had no
idea what they had been doing.

In previous strandings where the
Navy had been involved, the
NOA team had found whales that had
died from asphyxiation. It is believed that the loud
sound of military sonar drives
whales into shallow waters
where they
beach themselves without enough water to support their
weight. The whales' internal organs
collapse, and they
slowly suffocate. The NOA team expected to
find evidence of internal organ collapse in the analysis of the remains,
but instead, they found
something else. When we examined the
samples, we expected to see signs of
trauma because that would indicate
bleeding from the ears. We weren't
prepared for what we were about to find. Let's
see, the internal organs didn't collapse.
What we saw was the consequence of constant
trauma. There
were circular lesions in the
samples, clear evidence of damage, and they were
in all the samples we
collected. Brian immediately proposed a
theory:
infrasound are sound waves at
ultra-low frequencies that can
theoretically be used as weapons with
potentially
devastating effects. They are launched against
living tissue with
incredible force. The microscope showed
evidence of catastrophic
impact wounds, impact wounds that we believed
were caused by a new
Navy sonar. A sonar blast that
did more than scare the whales
into shallow waters; this sonar
seemed to
kill them. Brian knew we needed more
than just those tissues to prove the
theory. We had
NOAA; they had devices to record
audio of marine fauna and flora, even
seismic activity. One of those beacons was very
close, so we knew it was possible
we had recorded everything that happened:
the sonar blast,
the whales' reaction. The
first thing we found was the
sound of the whales, and that was what
we expected, but then we found
what We thought it was the sonar setup,
then there was a
silence. It turned out to be the calm
before the storm because then
we heard a
boom. It was horrible to hear.
Brian was so preoccupied cataloging
the sonar blast that he almost missed
what was
happening. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Then there was another sound on the recording. It was an animal scream. We realized it was a Blop, the same creature that Noa recorded in 1997, but in this case, the recording
lasted longer. It's the most
complex and intricate animal scream I've ever heard.
We had no idea where that
sound was coming from. All we knew was that this
creature had only been heard once before
in human history. It had
reappeared. This recording was
supposedly made in 2009 at a
naval facility in Beauford,
South Carolina.

I've seen the recording that was supposedly
made on
BT. I don't know if that video is authentic or not. I do
n't really care. He
maintains strict control over all
his Classified information, but even
they've realized that no
matter what they do to prevent it, there will
always be some leaks. This man
agreed to give his testimony for this
program on the condition of
anonymity. When there's a leak, they know
how to
control it. It doesn't surprise me that the
BF video was immediately deemed fake.
The Navy says it's
fake. So it's fake.
Whenever there's an information leak,
the military uses its influence
to make the general public believe what
they want them to believe. What I
can tell you is that I
saw a creature that's in
the Navy's possession. We picked it up after the
first test in
Washington State. That day it was on the beach,
but we weren't the first to arrive.

In the months following the stranding in
Washington State, the
NOAA team responded to a large increase in
mass strandings along
both coasts of the United States.
Reports of
similar mass strandings were received from all over
the
world. Rescue teams are working
against the clock to try to save nearly
200 pilot whales stranded this
Monday in South Australia. They have also
found six dolphins. This
is the fourth such incident
in just a few months in southern
Australia, and scientists can't
find an explanation for these
incidents. It was happening all over the
world. So we were examining the
strandings everywhere, alerting
maritime agencies to what
we discovered with the
sonar blasts. And we started hearing other things:
reports of bodies being dragged along with the
whales. There were rumors that the
whales were dragging other things with them,
and in every case, the
authorities were always nearby to
control the
scene. At that point, all we
wanted was for the strandings to
stop once and for all. In
some of these incidents, we
received reports not only of bodies being
found but of something
else—something that had already formed
before. They weren't bodies but
spears. For years, deep-sea fishermen
from all over the world have seen them; they find them
in fish caught in the
open sea. In the archives of a
German news program, we found an
interview with a fisherman who had an
experience with this strange
phenomenon. My name is B. I grew up in the
fishing port of
Sasn. I've been a fisherman all my
life. I used to work on a boat... In
Bremen, we mainly did
cod and pollock trawling in the
Baltic Sea. I had heard many
stories about strange objects
found in fish caught in the middle
of the Baltic,
but on a trawl in the
deep waters of the Borm Basin, I saw it
with my own eyes. Sometimes, when
we hauled the nets onto the boat, we would
find
the fish dead; they had spears
in their sides. I saw it several
times, so on one of those trips, I
took my camera. I wanted to take pictures of
the whales to show my son. It was on
that trip, while we were hauling in the
nets, that we saw something sticking out of them
as we were bringing them onto the boat.
So I ran for the camera and
managed to take a
picture. I think that's where the
spears came from. I think we disturbed that creature
while it was
fishing. We requested information from the
Department of Defense and asked them to
limit the Navy's operations,
but we didn't get anywhere. The Navy
assured us that it was only
studying the anomalies and not
causing them. We continued compiling
the profiles of those events and reviewing
the only thing we had, which was the
recording. We listened and We analyzed the
recording I don't know how many times and
compared it to whale and
dolphin calls. This sound, in our
understanding, seemed much more intricate,
much more
advanced. We believed we had some
chance of solving the mystery,
but it was beyond us. So
we needed
help. I'm Dr. Rodney Webster from the
University of South Florida. I
specialize in animal communication.
My work focuses primarily on
the calls of
dolphins and
whales. A large part of my work
consists of looking for signifiers, which are
particular sounds to which you can
relate a meaning or a
mood. For humans, they would be words.
So they would be like
dolphin words. The most interesting thing about the
2004 recording is that I was able to
identify literally hundreds of
signifiers and organize them into
recognizable patterns. In the previous 30 years,
we had gathered so much information
studying dolphins and
whales. But that wasn't all
Dr. Webster found in the recording. I
noticed that there were pitch changes
in the bass in certain parts of the
recording. So I performed a
spectrographic analysis of the data at
frequencies higher than those perceived by the human ear.

The aquatic ape theory
is actually a theory about

I know there has always been a great
controversy but I think now we
really have

land animals According to this theory it is because there was
a time when early
humans spent most of their lives at
sea and the trait that makes us so
different from other land animals
is their legacy from that
time We can control our breathing
like marine mammals and hold it
longer than any other
land animal The record for holding our
breath is about 20 minutes almost
the same time a dolphin can dive
Compared to monkeys our
closest relatives we have A
much more flexible spine and
partial webbing between our
fingers, which they don't have, are
characteristics of an aquatic environment.
Why do we have them? If not for
swimming, human babies
automatically hold their breath underwater;
they know how to swim instinctively, while
a baby chimpanzee or gorilla would
drown. Unlike other apes,
we shed our hair; hair creates
resistance in the water. We have a
thick layer of insulating fat that
keeps us warm in the water; the only
animals born with a thick layer
of fat are
marine mammals. Some people are also
adapted to underwater life; they still
hunt on the seabed and walk
across the
ocean floor. The Moques, a people of
Southeast Asia, can constrict their
pupils at will to control the
distortion created by the water; in fact,
underwater they see with the same clarity
as if they were wearing
glasses. In some parts of the world,
humans skilled in the water who can
fish without hooks or
nets are adaptations for life in the
water, but we lack adaptations
common to
land animals. We shed tears and
salty sweat; salt and water are resources.
Valuable other land animals
have efficient ways of preserving their resources.
Why do
n't we? Because part of our evolution
took place in the
sea. Well, this is just a theory, but the
transition from land to sea has
happened before. It's documented.
Orcas evolved from a
wolf ancestor millions of years ago, and there are
more
recent examples. 150 million years ago—a
fraction of time in
evolutionary terms—a group of brown bears
separated from the rest of their lineage and
evolved into a new species:
polar bears. Polar bears are able to
hold their breath underwater
for several minutes. They have developed
webbing between their toes
to swim better. Currently,
before our very eyes, they are
evolving into marine mammals. If
this is happening with
polar bears, why couldn't the same thing have happened
with the human lineage at some point in
our evolution?

We could have descended from a group of
apes that one day became
marine mammals in Africa 7 million years ago.
Some scientists believe our
ancestors traded the forests for the
sea. But what brought them there?
What brought them to the
seashore was food.
Our ability to walk
upright first developed
here, walking in the
shallow waters where food was easy to find.
Trees had been our
cradle, but now we were adapted to
the
sea. Over time, more of our
human ancestors gathered along the
coast. It is also believed that this is where
our advanced intelligence began to develop.
The brain developed
thanks to nutrients like iodine and
fatty acids that were abundant in
the crustaceans and shellfish they
found there. We were beginning to
change, as was the environment.
Earthquakes and volcanic activity along
the
coast. The east African coast would soon
be flooded by rising
sea levels. Some of our ancestors
stayed on land and retained some
of the adaptive characteristics from the
aquatic period of their
evolution. Others went in different
directions. Six and a half million years
earlier, if our distant ancestors
spent some time living at sea, it is
possible that one group separated from the
rest.
Instead of drifting away, they... We went further
into the water

We detailed all the strandings
after the Washington one to
try to establish a pattern of
Navy involvement. If we could prove that it
was affecting a new
species, we thought we would have some
power that we could compel the Navy
to reveal what they were doing and
possibly prevent it.
We had
more circumstantial evidence, and that's what we
got in the
South African stranding. What makes that
stranding stand out is that our
South African colleagues also managed to make a
recording. Of course, we had heard about
Dr. Macormic's work.
We knew about the reports that linked
mass strandings to sonar tests.
We also knew about the rumors that
those tests might have affected a
species that science had not yet
identified. And of course, we
had also heard the recording of the blop.
I'm Dr. Gavin Dmar, head of the
Acoustic Research Project at the
Marine Biology Research Centre, University of Cape Town.
A submarine device just 1 km off
the coast of
Cape Town was part of a
research program to observe the
whale population at certain times. That
year we contacted
Dr. McCormick because we believed we had
found the
same thing. When we heard his recording,
we immediately accepted his invitation
to
investigate. We arrived about 40 hours
after the stranding. And again, we weren't
the first to arrive.
Other official researchers had been
there.
The South African stranding was the
largest since the Washington State stranding.
And again, we found the
same patterns of
acoustic trauma. What was different in
South Africa was the
recording. They had a recording of a blop,
the same strange creature we had
recorded, and an
identical low-frequency sonar burst.
But here, the revealing thing was what
happened before the
burst. It was the sound of a bl
similar to the one we had recorded. It was
clear it was the same type of
creature. But this time, a dolphin was also heard. It
's no surprise; there are
dolphins in those waters, and there were also
stranded dolphins. But this was
communication, a two-way communication
between the bl creature and the
dolphins, which made us think it
could be a Dolphin, some
new species of dolphin. From that moment on,
we believed that was what we were
looking for. Up until then, we only had
acoustic evidence, but the
physical evidence that Dr. Ditmar gave us was
the most important. It's a great
white shark—not the shark itself,
but what's
inside. It was a mess, and the smell was
awful. There were parts that seemed to
come from a dolphin, other parts that
looked like seals, but we didn't find either
a seal or a dolphin. There were also
other body parts.
We had no idea what we were
looking at, but we immediately thought we'd
hit the jackpot. It was something
new, a new
species. There were puncture marks
around the gills. And the shark's mouth—
at first I thought it was
harpoon wounds from when I was near the
boat, but I examined one of those wounds
and found a venomous ray stinger inside. It
could have been left there by a
venomous ray while defending itself.
Sharks eat rays; the
hammerhead and tiger sharks do,
but not the great white. So I
kept the
stinger. I thought it was something I could
publish in a journal. It seemed
interesting. African coast, 6
million years ago.
A million years after venturing
into the sea, the aquatic apes were
better adapted to their new
environment. They lost most of their
fur and could hold their breath
for several
minutes. They were still learning to
hunt by observation.
Without warning,
dolphins
temporarily dispersed. The
aquatic apes had to hide, but over
time, they learned to defend themselves against the dangers of their
new
environment. The first time
the weapon was tested off the coast of Washington, it
was a
disaster. The result took us
completely by surprise.
The perimeter wasn't secured. It was
completely open. Anyone
walking along the beach that
morning would have known those children were in the
right place at the wrong
time. At first, it seemed like it was going to
be a
problem. They refused to retract what they
initially claimed to have
seen. Finally, we convinced the mother
of one of the children that it wasn't what they
thought they had seen.
Normally, people don't want trouble
when the military is involved.
The mother was
clever enough to get the children
to change their
statement. We kept an eye on the
children, but they didn't tell anyone what
happened. They kept everything
that happened that
day a secret. After the first test, we didn't leave them there again. We didn't want to
find
anything. University of Cape Town,
July 22, 2005. We took the body to the
laboratory, and the state of the remains
was very
bad. We recovered parts of the body, so it was going to be
difficult to put them back together. The first thing
we did was take DNA samples
to try to establish its
genetic makeup. We started by examining the
rib cage, and it appeared to be
articulated. The articulated rib cage is
a feature of
marine mammals that have evolved for diving.
The flipper The tail was well-
preserved and looked very similar to that of
manatees. We wondered if it could be the
remains of a
population, or perhaps an unidentified relative of
the
manatee. We took X-rays and saw
bones in the tail fluke;
manatees don't have them. So we were left
wondering what on earth
this was. The skull was seriously damaged;
half of it was missing, but we did have one piece:
part of the
frontal bone. The bone had a hole, and it wasn't from
the injuries. We knew it was
a
blowhole. We made resin casts of
the skull fragments and sent them
to a
forensic expert. Then we examined the pelvis. There were
traces of leg bones; seals
have these traces, but the femur was
shorter, and we knew that our
specimen's was
longer. So the specimen wasn't
a seal or a
manatee, and despite talking to
dolphins, it wasn't a dolphin, at least not
according to what we were
seeing. So what other animal would be
intelligent enough to
communicate with dolphins? What else is
down there? Coast of Madagascar 4.5

The creature that once hid in
the shadows now swam in the
open sea. They weren't
[Music]
alone. They had bonds with another
intelligent being. It was a bond of friendship.
Sometimes they just played, but on occasion
they hunted

together. Their ancestors slept in trees.
Now they swam among
them. Soon their transition would be
complete. Just as dolphins
would be adapted to the
[Music]
[Music]
sea. Brian and I tried to make sense of the
remaining parts. We found a
bone that wasn't part of the animal. It had
markings all along its length. The tip had
a
carved notch. We didn't know what to do with it,
so we set it aside to
analyze
later. I started working with the
phalanges. They are the bones that support the
flippers or the flipper structure of
seals and
dolphins. It was clear that those bones
couldn't be arranged to configure any
of those things.
The creature had suffered injuries from
the navy's sonar.
Now the team of Noa was
convinced that the Navy was not only
harming whales with
its tests but also a new
species. The creature's physiology
gave them deeper insight into its
behavior. Despite having injuries
from the shark attack, they found a
large cup. Large cups are a
characteristic of marine mammals; they
store energy for
deep dives. It's like having a
scuba tank built into them. The only
reason for having this adaptation is for
deep dives in search of

Every time we found something new,
dozens of
questions arose. Dr. McCormick invited
someone to take a look.
South African bureaucracy was
taking a long time to authorize us to
take material out of the country, so Brian had him
come. "
There I am, specializing in biomechanics,
in the different ways in which
animals have adapted to different
means of locomotion. I am Dr.
Steven
Piersall." When I arrived,
I thought, "What the hell am I doing here if it's already there?" Of
course it's a marine mammal. The tail
looked like those of animals
found in the
oceans. Only when we analyzed the
remains with the scanner did I
realize it was a
tail no one had ever seen
before. Observing the
hip structure, Dr. Pial recognized something
surprisingly familiar in
humans. If we look at the upper part of
the hip, we find ridges
called iliac crests,
designed to support
weight. It seemed the creature had
similar ridges on its hips, but it didn't make
sense until I realized we were
looking at the X-ray
incorrectly. We were seeing it this way, but
in fact, we had to turn it upside down.
Then it became obvious
that this creature once walked on two
legs. There's only one animal that walks
upright on two
legs.
If this creature walked on two legs, it
also
had
hands. Rebecca discovered
that
this creature had
hands. The discovery that this
creature once walked upright on
Earth, just like us, because it was
like us, changed
everything. This bone had been manipulated,
hand-carved. The tip, where the notch was,
was designed to hold something.
We found fibers of plant material
that The bone was wrapped around it; it must be there
to hold
something. Then
I remembered, the tip of the
stinger fit perfectly into the
tip of the bone. It was a
tool. All those fish they
found with
embedded spears, all those stories of
fishermen finding spears in the
open sea—it was the same thing. It's a
creature that makes
tools. This creature has found
a way to disarm the stingrays
and use their stingers to
kill fish. They are
intelligent hunters,
but they are also prey. How have
these creatures evolved to
survive among the most
formidable predators in the
ocean? North America,

and cold place to them.

I remember we were in the car to see
the full cast of the
skull I thought everything was perfect we were
heading to one of the places where
they found some of our
oldest ancestors
and we were about to meet
another one Only this was not an
ancestor but a creature that follows
There,
reconstruction, I am Dr. Lian Biser, a
forensic anthropologist in the Department of
Human Evolution. I took charge of
reconstructing the individual based
on the skull fragments and other
bones. Immediately,
certain characteristics caught my attention. The
skull had very large eye sockets,
larger than any fossil or
modern human skull I have reconstructed. It
must have had very large eyes, and
large eyes are a characteristic of
animals adapted to
darkness. Another thing I noticed was a
crest on the skull. Skulls with
crests are found in some of
our ancestors but not in
modern humans. Apes have them too; they are
found in some of our
earliest ancestors.
Examining the reconstructed skull allowed
Dr. Biser to map the interior of
the
brain cavity. She discovered that the areas in
humans that correspond to the
interpretation of sounds were very
large. The opening in the front
of the skull was connected to a wide
series of
nasal cavities. The shape and characteristics
of the skull revealed how complicated
the acoustic capacity is.
The concave shape of the front of the
skull indicates that they have a melon,
a specialized mass of fatty tissue
that It allows dolphins and
whales to
echolocate. It's not a
blowhole; they don't use it to breathe, but
to channel
sound. The skull reconstruction
showed that it's possible that this creature
is capable of using echolocation. It's
the creature that makes that
sound. The cry that we hadn't been able to identify.

Echolocation, a form
of biosonar, is the ability to emit
high-frequency sounds that bounce off
objects to give the animal a
mental map of its
surroundings. They use sound to
find food and to communicate in the
middle of the dark and vast
ocean. We have no doubt that this animal
was the one that made the blop. It was the same
animal that made the blop we recorded in
1997, the same one we recorded in
Washington State in
2004, and it was the same animal we recorded
in South Africa that was talking to the
dolphins in the Indian Ocean 100,000 years ago.

schools of
sardines. Almost all the ocean's predators
converge in a caravan of
several kilometers long during the

two new species of
whales were discovered These are animals between 9
and 12 meters long that we had never seen before. They had
never been recorded.
Gigantic animals that were seen for the
first time in the last 10 years,
so it is possible that they are still
hidden.
But
also, there was already a record of the animal we
found. We didn't have
scientific records, but we did have other types of
records. We already knew about them, and for a long time

other, but they all described the same
creature.
These stories could be more than a
myth. There are records in the
logbooks of Christopher Columbus and Henry
Hudson of sightings of
humanoid creatures with pale,
mottled bellies, dark blue backs, and
oar-shaped tails. These could be
exact descriptions of what they
saw. They could give us A new
perspective, other historical evidence
such as these 10th-century Italian drawings
of what was thought to be the
description of some human medical anomaly.
Now these sketches could
tell a different story.

Even today,
reports continue to surface, such as this video
hastily recorded in 2005 on the
Adriatic coast.

This recent sighting comes from
fishermen at
sea. The oldest can be found
in the desert that remained where there was once
a sea.
Egypt
today, these caves of Aris IIer by
the Bay. 3,000
years ago, the sea is gone, but the memory
of the people who lived there is still
etched in cave paintings that cover
the
cave walls. Archaeologists believe they could
be the oldest mythical paintings
made by man.

dream projections of the first fishermen
imagining themselves with tails,
swimming with spears and nets to fish? Or is it something else? Did
the first humans fight
savagely for farming and
fishing grounds, using force against
rival tribes? Against any competitor
that threatened a valuable
food source, could that be what
these
paintings represent? Could these paintings be a
record of man's conflict with
a creature now relegated to
myth? Did we push them to extinction, or did
we force them into
hiding? Did they exist? If they
survived, they must have hidden
somewhere, but where?

We knew what they
had. We knew it even before
they knew it. Since 2004, we've been tracking
the
McOr team. We followed them to
South Africa. We knew they had found
the same creature we
took from the
beach. They had evidence that could have
shut down the
operation. They had physical evidence that
could have stopped us. Do
you think we were going to let them do that? They were getting
ahead of our
research. That's why we let them
continue for a
while. At that point, we had already wrapped up
in
South Africa and were preparing the
evidence to return to the United States,
but the
permits were missing. The South African authorities
were delaying the permits to
take the evidence out of the
country. We should have known what was going to
happen. Now it's hard to remember everything. It's
hard to remember how excited
we were. The reason I agreed to
do this is because I think it will be
useful. Rebecca and I believe so. However,
BR is more
suspicious. I think he's not
convinced, and I don't blame him at all.

I tried to control
BR after that for
weeks, but he was very
upset. We all were.
The police confiscated
everything, all the lab evidence,
all the
files, the reconstructed skull we
were going to bring back,
and they took the body.

certainly never seen anything
like it, and I've worked here for 20
years. This is unprecedented. It wasn't
a normal police raid. It was a
very
sophisticated operation. They arrived in the morning
when they knew no
one was around. Right over all the

information.
A
discovery of
national importance. I've never heard of anything
like it. We know who did it. We all
know that the sonar evidence is behind this. We
proved it. So they had to stop the
tests. They had to make it public that they had
a sonar.
Military, who knows what other things
they would have had to acknowledge.
The only thing we have, the only thing they did
n't confiscate, were the
Blop recordings. They couldn't
take them because so
many people already had those recordings. We were so
focused on the things
the government had confiscated that we didn't realize that
the only thing we needed
was on those
recordings. We just needed the
recordings.

The South Pacific 150

years ago, a
shallow coastal lagoon in the Southern Hemisphere where
creatures take refuge in the
warm, safe waters, and where this
endangered species clings desperately.

When we returned to the United States,
we were in
shock. We couldn't stay in South Africa
because they revoked our
visas, and when we returned to Washington,
we filed several complaints with the
U.S. and
South African governments. After a while, the
South African government
responded and shared the
DNA samples. that they had confiscated from the
University lab where they
were
processing them because the
DNA test results were so similar to
human DNA. They said the tests had been
contaminated in the lab with
human DNA. They said why else would they
be so
similar? To discredit the
results, they destroyed all the
samples. It seemed like we were in
an Orwellian novel. It was the
government; they were rewriting
history. Basically, they were erasing the
existence of that creature. And the question I kept asking myself
was why are they doing it? To
hide their
evidence? Do they want to keep the
creature? Are they doing tests on it? We do
n't know.
We still don't
know. Now we just have time.
We keep receiving reports of
whale strandings and other bodies
washed up on beaches, where
local authorities close off the areas.
They say that in some cases there are
army officers in civilian clothes.
We kept thinking about the
Washington stranding, about that
Navy team. We thought they were
doing tests on the
whales, but now we have a
different theory. We located the children who
reported the
stranding. The Navy had spent a lot of
time with those children. They even went to
see them at their
house. They convinced the children that
what they had seen was a
seal, a decomposing seal, which is why it
looked so strange.

The boy drew a picture of what
[Music] he saw.
Besides the
scientists and
government officials who confiscated our
material, no one knew what the
reconstructed skull looked like, but the boy drew
a picture of what he had
seen, and it matched.
The boy had seen the same
creature. It wasn't all he showed us.
The boy's mother agreed to
show us
something they hadn't shown to anyone.
The Navy didn't think to check the boy's
cell phone camera. It's
not the first time
military personnel have been caught with cell phone cameras. But back then,
almost no one had them. I
doubt the officer who
investigated
checked it. The boy had it; he had it all that
time.

feeling chills, and not from the
surprise of seeing the creature alive.
I remember
previous sonar exposures. The creature didn't
stand a
chance.

their
young they now head to the
feeding grounds of the
North the whales provide them
protection against orcas and
open-ocean sharks and the females with calves
can swim over them to conserve
energy as they travel up the Pacific coast

their last hiding place is in the
depths of the ocean But now not
even there do they find refuge and the
whales cannot protect them from the
new threats that are
coming they swim through an expanse
of water in the Pacific Northwest that day
the ships of the United States
Navy were there too what happened
next was what the NOA audio teams recorded

we didn't find another
live creature at least not during my time in the
Navy when I resigned we
weren't even sure we'd find any
more the creature we picked up from the
beach in Washington state died
in
2007 we were alive as long as
possible I know it was wrong What We did it. I knew it
was wrong when I
was doing it, and I have to live with
it now. My only hope is that by
telling all this, it will help protect them,
if there are any left.

knew they were being swept along with
the
whales.
We discovered they travel along the
migration routes. They not only interact with
whales, they also migrate with
them. We wanted to try to establish

contact. If we saw whales, we knew we
were in the right area. [Music]
We started
recording and waited to see if there was
anything.

something. Brian was sure he
saw something,
and I'm sure I saw something too.

They were watching what we were doing. The
government was
monitoring us. Anything we had
recorded that day would have been
taken from us. That way, we weren't going to achieve

anything. He was the first to leave.
Noah, Paul, and I resigned shortly
after. I haven't spoken to Brian since he
left. I guess he
thinks the only The way to save them
is by
finding her, but I'm not so
sure, and I don't think Paul is either. He
was
devastated, and he wanted to search for the creature to

know he's still

quickly ended their
existence. This is the same thing. What
we did on land with our
fellow humans, we do in the
sea. We don't handle coexistence very well;
sometimes other
responsibilities supplant
science. My only goal is for the
Navy to stop the
sonar tests, for the justice system to investigate their
activities, and for them to be ordered to hand over
their
evidence. The mermaids have been able to
survive only because they can hide,
and I hope they continue to do so. I hope they
stay
hidden. I don't want them
hunted
because they don't want to be found.

only asked me to analyze the pelvis
and leg bones. I never saw The
rest is not
from a strange
disease or a
deformity. What was that

creature? I don't
know. The only thing I know is where it came from.
I'm absolutely sure. Where it
came from: the bones we
examined are of
unknown origin. It's a creature with which
we share a
common ancestor. We both descend from the same
species. What I saw that day on the pier
is

dedicated my whole life to the sea, I've
dedicated my life to the study of the sea,
and I've never seen a creature like that before. It's
a new creature for
science. I've mentally replayed those
recordings over and over again, the first one
from Washington State and the second one
from South Africa, to try to understand it,
but I can't. I don't know what they are. I don't know what they're
saying. I've never heard anything
like it. The only creature with that level
of complexity
is the human being.
We, as I've said before, doing
a reconstruction is like doing a
puzzle. The pieces have to fit together for
the image to make sense,
biological sense. If even one piece doesn't fit, the
reconstruction is
useless. In my opinion, the molds they
sent me were made from an
authentic
find. They were
authentic molds. of a
real animal, call it what you want, forget
our claims,
forget the recordings we have,
forget the sworn statements of
other scientists, and forget our
cultural references to mermaids. There is
another culture that...
Remember, nature does not lie.
Observe nature.
There are a few places on Earth
where wild dolphins hunt with
fishermen. They help humans
catch fish. This happens in Brazil,
on the west coast of Africa, and in
Southeast
Asia. The fishermen position themselves on the
seashore in shallow water
and call and lick the
dolphins. They are wild sea dolphins.
The dolphins respond to the call
by driving entire schools of fish
toward the
shore. Then the fishermen surround
the schools of fish with their nets, along
with the
dolphins. The dolphins are not frightened;
they remain calm. They know that the
fishermen will let them go. When they
haul in the
nets, they let the dolphins out before
taking the fish to shore, and the
dolphins stay in the
shallow water, anxiously waiting for
the fishermen... They give them their
share, they throw fish to the dolphins to
eat, basically they divide the catch,
dolphins and men sharing the
loot, sharing the fish they've
caught together, two animals from different
environments
cooperating. There's nothing like it anywhere else in
the world and nobody knows. How
this
collaboration began is one of the great
mysteries of the
ocean. How did that collaboration
between humans and
dolphins evolve? How were we able to teach the
dolphins to do
this? We didn't do it, we did
n't teach the
dolphins. They taught us,
and I think they learned it from someone.
We're not the only culture that remembers
