As a software engineer, have you ever had such an experience? Work hard, work overtime, finish the project, use all kinds of methods, write the code to make others look good. The design patterns and best practices I learned in school were all used. The test was also written in good quality. In the end, the project was perfectly improved and advanced to production. The manager also publicly praised your efforts.
But every year, the performance regime, the manager, still encourages you to keep working hard. You've worked hard this year, so don't work too hard in December. Have a good rest, and keep working hard next year. You can get better one day. Hello everyone, I'm Terry. If you haven't seen my previous video, I'm a software engineer who is currently working in the department of software engineering. Today, I want to talk to you about how a software engineer can become the next Jeff Dean in the field.
Alright, it's not that exaggerated Jeff Dean is a god of a different level But the point is today is to talk about What is the role of software engineer Why is this position much more complicated than you think? Not writing high-quality code Can become a very powerful and excellent software engineer The water in it may be deeper than you think If you are not familiar with this industry Or have been in this industry for a few years Found that your career has never been any progress I think there will be a lot of benefits after watching this episode today
Before we start, please like my video. My channel doesn't sell anything weird and I don't sell anything bad to you. So your likes are the biggest support for me. As a software engineer, programmer, computer guy, IT guy, whatever you want to call it, people in this industry are usually rational and think straight. Why do many people say that many of the people in the field of science and technology are steel men? There is no reason.
As a software engineer, I also think that a good software engineer is to do his best to deliver the best solution to the boss, and to work with the main staff to write the code beautifully. I will try to meet all the needs of all the customers, and my career will naturally be successful. This kind of thinking is what I tried to write today. The boss is happy, and I will get the reward I deserve. It sounds logical and reasonable, but if your understanding of software engineers is just like this, you may always be the average developer.
Unfortunately, the world is so unfair Not everything is a effort will get a profit Like a computer, a line of code, a command, so simple As a software engineer If you want to get the reward you deserve Whether it's a bonus, stock share or even to the next level You need to fight for yourself The first point is that when you finish a project You need to know how to get this credit Many people think the end of a project is to deduct Or feature to production or to give to customers Actually not that simple If your code quality is good
Your colleagues will give you a thumbs up on your code review Just like you might help me with the thumbs up below the video It's better if he leaves a comment to praise you But that doesn't mean anything You wrote the test very well Finally, this feature is bug free Will anyone remember you? No Because someone will modify your code later And then build a new feature So your high quality work is as small as a firewood Maybe it's just a few seconds of flash It's really not a few people who will notice Let alone your manager who hasn't written code for years He doesn't even notice these details
In his eyes, he must have 10 people to control He only knows that Terry taught the things to be taught today OK, very good, very good That's about it If you want to be the black horse in software engineers You have to know how difficult it is to let everyone know that you have done a great feature today How do you overcome these technical difficulties
Because whether you can succeed in this company is a decision made by someone It's your colleagues who need to listen to you, your manager to promote you It's possible that your manager's manager will decide whether to give you this promotion in the end If you don't know how to get these credits, your efforts are easily like a firewood, finally being burned to ashes You have to know that because everyone is very busy, no one will remember who produced high-quality code today
It's even more unlikely that someone will actively promote you because of this. So what exactly can we do to make everyone see it? There are many ways. For example, you can take the initiative to share some of the project's experience with the team at the end of the project. Make a lunch and learn session, etc. Share the difficulties you encounter and some solutions. What did you learn from it? Or in the process of chatting with the manager, try to let him know what your contribution to this project is. And then the final impact
How big is the impact? These are all when you should take the initiative to take credit Don't be afraid that others think you are being arrogant Your efforts should be taken by yourself If some projects are a team that everyone works together to complete You can also take the initiative to say that you want to do a presentation to increase everyone's impression of you The point is that since you have spent time and effort to do these things Then don't ignore the last step to work hard to get the credit you deserve Of course, remember to share these credits with your team
The second is to help your colleagues. Helping others will not only improve your own ability, but also increase your team's interpersonal relationship. When you decide whether to give you a promotion, your manager may ask your colleagues about your feedback, or many companies have peer review mechanisms. At this time, interpersonal relationships are particularly important, because your manager may not know what you are doing all the time.
He may be busy himself Maybe a day down to meet with more than ten people When it comes to reviews He will rely on the feedback from others To decide whether to promote you So if you can help others today It's also helping yourself in the future If you don't know how to start You can start with Code Review I think Code Review is a very good When helping colleagues
The third one is when you have taken all the credit you should take You also have your team's human resources It's time to take the initiative to ask your manager You have to tell him clearly what your goal is Whether it's promotion or bonus For example, you have been in this company for a year You think you should go up a level You can tell your manager We are doing this high impact project this quarter If it can be executed successfully How much profit can the office bring in the end? Can you help me get a promotion? If he says this impact may be
Then you can ask him what else you can do Can let you have the opportunity to fight for this promotion When you reach a consensus You have a clear goal to achieve Then let your manager do what he should do To help you fight for this promotion The meaning of your manager is to help you achieve your career goals But the very important premise is that you have to take the initiative to raise these goals Then take the evidence to say that you have achieved these goals Whether it's numbers or feedback from others
When these objective conditions have been met I believe your manager will also be very willing to promote you Your manager will usually not take the initiative to think about these things For them, whether you are promoted or not will not affect their own promotion Anyway, you have done everything today No matter what, they will get credit from their own manager
Although it's your manager's job to help you grow today, it doesn't affect their performance. So they won't help you plan your career. If you don't have a plan, you can only do things honestly and be the invisible man who gives up behind the scenes.
Alright, that's it for today's video. These are some of my experiences working with big companies. I think it's really helpful for me. I hope it can help you or give you some inspiration. Sometimes we might think that a good software engineer is to write it down and then deliver high-quality results.
But in fact, the communication and interpersonal relationship behind it, let everyone know that your efforts and the impact of the project are often more important than the efforts you made before. Because all things in the company are ultimately made by people, not computers. The majority of silent sacrifices are not easy to see. Even if you are seen, no one will take the initiative to do something for you. Your career growth needs you to take the initiative to push. If you don't take the initiative to push, then you can only follow the rhythm of others. If you like this video, remember to like it.
