In my previous video, I talked about the

0:02

various cut colossi from Shadow of the

0:04

Colossus.

0:06

I referenced some of the more recent

0:08

leaks. However, I only became aware of

0:10

them as I was editing that video. Among

0:13

the leaks was a story board dated July

0:15

2004, back when the game had 24 colossi.

0:20

It details the history of the Forbidden

0:22

Lands and offers an explanation of how

0:24

Dorman came to be.

0:26

In this video, I'm going to read through

0:28

the story board and afterwards talk

0:30

about some of its inspirations.

0:52

Before we begin, we must establish how

0:55

time works in this land.

0:57

Eras of the world is a substitute for

0:59

the common era dating system.

1:02

This was a way of denoting years in the

1:05

wonder universe and it appears to be

1:07

mostly equivalent to real life years.

1:10

BWE means before world era and we means

1:15

world era. It's the same as BC and AD.

1:24

A large-scale disaster took place around

1:27

this period, sweeping away most of the

1:29

known world. The specifics of what

1:32

transpired are unknown, but it is

1:34

written that this was a natural

1:35

disaster. It wiped out most of mankind

1:38

and reshaped the local topography,

1:41

significantly altering the people's

1:43

perspective on their land. The

1:45

population bottleneck reduced the spread

1:48

of man upon the region from several

1:50

million to nothing more than a few

1:52

scattered pockets of nomadic survivors

1:54

who banded together.

1:57

Over the years, the survivors, now

1:59

consisting of dozens of thousands of

2:01

people, began to scatter abroad.

2:04

They split in half with one half heading

2:07

towards the northwest and the other

2:09

towards the southeast.

2:20

The remaining half of the nomadic

2:22

civilization journeyed southeastward.

2:25

They came upon a plane in the land of

2:27

Sinar at the ends of the earth. They

2:30

settled there, making it their home.

2:34

Back then the earth contained giants.

2:38

Powerful men and women of renown among

2:41

the nomads encountered these beings in

2:44

their explorations of Sinar and were

2:46

aruck by the giants and their kind who

2:49

came to be known as the colossi.

2:52

[Music]

2:54

They were biologically immortal and

2:56

varied in appearance to affect their

2:58

environment.

3:00

It was said that these majestic beings

3:02

were deities that embodied nature.

3:06

And it came to pass that the mighty men

3:08

and women were outraged by the colossi,

3:11

for they considered them to be

3:12

responsible for the great catastrophe

3:15

that had wiped out the known world. They

3:18

rebelled and waged war against their

3:20

kind and called themselves dorman,

3:23

meaning insurgent, for they were the

3:25

mighty hunters in the face of gods.

3:30

The Dorman gathered their people and

3:32

forged weapons.

3:34

They formed an army and slayed one of

3:36

the colossi.

3:38

Its blood spilled, marking the land, and

3:42

its corpse became a hill of young

3:43

sprouts of grass.

3:46

They found that with every colossus

3:48

whose blood they spilled, it gravitated

3:50

towards the first, and so on, and the

3:53

hill grew.

3:56

The nomads said, "Come and let us build

3:59

a great monument from the corpses of the

4:02

gods at the center of the land and make

4:04

a name for ourselves, reach in the

4:07

heavens, and we shall never again be led

4:09

astray by the god's catastrophes."

4:15

The tower had become strong and tall at

4:18

their hands, so they called it the sky

4:21

tower.

4:23

They built miniature shrines in the

4:25

tower's image across the land in places

4:27

where the giants had fallen as a way of

4:30

mocking them.

4:35

The campaign against the colossi was

4:38

drawing to an end, and it had passed

4:41

that after each kill, the dorman had

4:43

deteriorated and become stripped of

4:45

humanity.

4:47

One day, it was not one of the gods

4:49

fallen corpses which gravitated towards

4:52

the sky tower, but rather the Dorman

4:55

insurgents themselves.

4:59

They coalesed and merged into one

5:01

another, forming a collective entity

5:04

whose likeness was that of the colossi

5:06

they slaughtered. And so they came to

5:08

believe that they had ascended into

5:10

godhood by overthrowing the gods and

5:13

taking their place.

5:15

They thought that they could rule the

5:17

land fairly, ensuring that the people

5:19

were never again scattered by any

5:21

catastrophes they judged to have come

5:23

from the old gods.

5:25

The people who had abstained from the

5:27

slaughter's numbers now ranked in

5:29

millions. They were all struck by the

5:31

turn of events, and thus the great

5:34

divide took place.

5:36

Several clans believed the Dorman had

5:38

ascended into godhood through their

5:40

deeds. The others deemed the entity and

5:43

their likeness as cursed and possessed

5:46

by the dead spirits of the innocent

5:48

creatures they had slaughtered. And

5:50

these people were known as the clans of

5:52

the ancients.

5:56

Each clan considered the other to be at

5:58

odds with their own beliefs. And it came

6:01

to happen in the days of the brave

6:02

elders that the clans of the ancients

6:05

divided. The clans of the ancients

6:08

separated from the dormant followers.

6:11

Both clans departed from the presence of

6:13

the sky tower, building kingdoms and

6:15

cities across the land, each after their

6:18

own view.

6:26

And it came to pass 400 years later that

6:30

the descendants of the Dorman followers

6:32

infringed upon the peaceful arrangements

6:34

of their ancestors.

6:36

They declared war on the clans of the

6:38

ancients who had rejected the Dorman.

6:41

Their conflict was bloody with the death

6:44

toll in the thousands.

6:46

Finally, elders from the clans of the

6:49

ancients gained the upper hand and

6:51

defeated the Dorman worshippers.

6:54

The elders used runes and magic that

6:57

their ancestors had drawn from the

6:58

colossi in order to cast away the

7:01

Dorman. Up until this point, the Dorman

7:04

had remained neutral and watched the

7:06

conflict from afar, refusing to

7:08

intervene in the matters of those who

7:10

they now considered to be merely

7:13

mortals.

7:23

Infuriated by the elders actions, the

7:26

Dorman manifested and attempted to stop

7:28

them.

7:32

However, the ancients gathered and used

7:35

the way of the giants to draw the

7:37

Dorman's essence away from its vessel,

7:40

rendering it powerless in the process.

7:45

And so it came to happen that the power

7:47

of the slain colossi was split between

7:50

24 great idols.

7:55

The power was drawn to statues erected

7:57

by peoples across the land.

8:01

It also went to the remaining colossi

8:03

who had hid from the dorman's wrath

8:05

before its birth centuries ago.

8:08

The colossi were corrupted with the

8:10

dorman's matter.

8:13

With the power of the giants who ruled

8:15

this land, sealed away in these towering

8:18

vessels and statues, it came to pass

8:21

that the people deemed the land cursed

8:23

by its bloody history of conflict and

8:26

disrespect of the natural order.

8:29

And so they sealed it away forever,

8:32

[Music]

8:34

building a great bridge to evacuate the

8:36

people from these lands forever.

8:45

Now we know the backstory. Here are some

8:48

of my thoughts on what could have

8:49

inspired it.

8:51

The sky tower seems to be based on the

8:53

mythological tower of Babel.

8:56

The story of its construction given in

8:58

the book of Genesis is an attempt to

9:00

explain the existence of diverse human

9:03

languages.

9:05

The Babylonians wanted to make a name

9:07

for themselves by building a mighty city

9:10

and a tower with its top in the heavens.

9:14

God disrupted the work by so confusing

9:17

the language of the workers that they

9:19

could no longer understand one another.

9:22

The city was never completed and the

9:24

people were dispersed over the face of

9:26

the earth. This is very similar to the

9:28

events detailed in the story board. When

9:31

reading the story board, I pronounced

9:33

the name of the land as Sinar. On

9:35

reflection, I should have probably

9:37

pronounced it Sinaar, similar to Shinar

9:40

from the Hebrew Bible, which is a clear

9:42

inspiration.

9:43

Shinar was used to describe the land

9:45

which includes the cities of Babel,

9:48

Eric, and Akad within the kingdom of

9:50

Nimrod. Nimrod himself seems to have

9:53

been a source of inspiration for this

9:55

story. He is a legendary biblical figure

9:58

of the book of Genesis.

10:01

Described in Genesis as the first on

10:03

earth to be a mighty man, he was a

10:06

mighty hunter before the Lord.

10:09

Extrabiblical traditions identified

10:11

Nimrod as the ruler who commissioned the

10:13

construction of the Tower of Babel,

10:16

which led to his reputation as a king

10:19

who was rebellious against the gods.

10:21

There is some consensus among biblical

10:23

scholars that the mention of Nimrod in

10:26

Genesis is a reference not to an

10:28

individual but to an ancient people in

10:31

Mesopotamia.

10:33

All of this is sounding very familiar

10:35

and a clear influence on the story

10:37

board.
