uh tell us about growing up here and and

how it's informed your philosophy and

>> Verona is 100 miles from Venice. So this

is still home in a little bit a little

bit for me. Um so I grew up in this

region uh uh in a comfortable rich

uh much loved by my family in a in a
1:54
rich country. Um and uh I think the

privilege of growing this way was also

that is a country that gave a very wide

education to to kids based on history,

on art, on philosophy

um on everything. It was very useful for

me for later my my scientific uh career

and also I grew up during the cold war

where the world was divided in two two

parts that were hating one hating one

another and describing one another as

and uh to some extent Italy was in

between was not the only country in

between but was a country in between

because it was a major communist party

here which also was good because it gave

a double perspective on on the world.

But then I left Italy pretty soon. I

traveled a lot. I lived US, France,

Canada, now Spain, many places.

the desire to to be in the middle of two

things very much resonates with your

chosen field of interest. um quantum

mechanics. So, why don't you tell us

um what first got you interested in
3:20
theoretical physics and how
3:24
uh how you've been curious about the
3:27
>> It happened quite late. Um I went to
3:32
university. I studied in Bologna.
3:34
Um oldest university in Europe. Um and
3:39
uh I enrol enrolled in physics uh I took
3:42
physics as a major uh not really because
3:46
I was particularly attracted by physics
3:49
but because I didn't know what to do and
3:52
uh my university years were years of uh
3:55
exploration of the world a lot of
3:57
reading a lot of traveling a lot of
3:59
friends a lot of experiences a lot of uh

trying different things were the 70s in
4:04
which part of the young generation was
4:07
very exploratory in terms of behavior
4:09
and uh and also ideas. Uh a lot of
4:13
discussion about ideas, a lot of reading
4:15
of philosophy, a lot of reading of
4:16
intellectuals. Um so science was I felt
4:21
that science was sort of the the new
4:23
knowledge of the new century and so I
4:26
needed to know something about it but I
4:29
I didn't go into it thinking I would
4:31
become a scientist. Then I stumbled
4:34
about quantum mechanics in a funny way
4:38
of course there are classes courses in
4:40
quantum mechanics in the university when
4:42
you study physics but that's not how I
4:44
studied quantum mechanics. stud quantum
4:46
mechanics because of a misunderstanding
4:49
because my mathematical teacher um sort
4:53
of gave us pieces of mathematics to
4:56
study gave me group theory and I said
4:59
okay what should I do and he said the
5:01
applications to quantum mechanics and I
5:03
said but I don't know quantum mechanics
5:05
yet and he said well study it and he was
5:08
joking but I didn't understand he was
5:10
joking so I went home and spent two
5:13
months total immersion in learning in
5:15
quantum mechanics and it was best two
5:17
months of my life. for me to five or six
5:19
books and uh studied this fabulous
5:22
theory and uh more or less the same time
5:27
I got in love with general relativity,
5:29
Einstein theory and that changed my life
5:33
the two things because uh now I found a
5:38
problem a a a kind of knowledge that uh
5:43
uh completely captured me and fascinated
5:45
me because it was profoundly
5:50
let me use this word revolutionary.
5:53
And that's what I wanted somehow. I
5:54
wanted something else. Not the world
5:56
that I had around me. I wanted something
5:58
else. And there was something else

a discovery scientific so in some sense
6:05
reliable that the world is not the way
6:07
we look at it. It's profoundly
6:09
different. I was extremely fascinated by
6:12
that. I started doing less and less of
6:14
all the rest and just naturally spending
6:18
more and more of my time uh reading
6:20
about science and then I realized that
6:23
these two major steps ahead in the
6:26
knowledge of of the world uh were not
6:29
yet combined. So the problem of quantum
6:32
gravity was still open and I I said okay
6:36
this has to be done. tell us what
6:37
quantum gravity is and how Einstein's
6:40
equations of general relativity describe
6:43
spacetime on um cosmological scales.

Yes. Um ice and relativity
6:51
um was born as a gravity. Gravity is you
6:53
know things falling down and the moon
6:55
going around the earth kept by gravity.
6:58
Um I realized that all the Newton theory

was insufficient the light of what was
7:03
had been understood. So uh changed it
7:06
and gave us this fabulous theory which
7:08
is general relativity which understands
7:10
gravity in terms of um uh a different
7:14
way of thinking about space and time
7:16
with respect to Newton. So space and
7:19
time becomes dynamical fields become
7:21
things themselves that can bend and
7:23
stretch and uh it's a it's a marvelous
7:27
theory. It really changes your
7:28
understanding of reality. Um and uh it's
7:35
110 now. Uh but in the last decades it
7:40
has obtained spectacular confirmations.

So basically everything Einstein
7:44
predicted black holes gravitational
7:47
waves expansion of universe turned out
7:48
to be true true and then the other half
7:51
is quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics
7:54
is a it's a theory about things um which
7:58
uh shows that things don't behave the
8:01
way we we we thought before. Um they
8:04
have curious properties. First of all um
8:08
they behave with probabilistic. We
8:10
cannot predict it with certainty. Uh
8:13
second there's a sort of granularity
8:15
discretetness at short scale. So light
8:17
for instance made by photons which are
8:19
little particle of light quanta that's
8:21
the name quantum mechanics and third
8:24
which is the most interesting thing that
8:32
cannot be understood just by themsel
8:34
they don't have just properties by
8:36
themsel the properties of things and
8:39
this is you said small things but in
8:42
reality everything just this is more
8:44
evident for small things things um have
8:47
properties when they interact with
8:49
something else. So we understand an
8:51
electron as in terms of the way it
8:54
affects something else and in fact we
8:57
understand everything in terms of how it

relate to something else. Which means

that to understand the world we have to
9:06
think in terms of relations

rather than in terms of individuals

Um this is very deep. it took long to be
9:17
digested but I think is the core message
9:21
of uh uh the new physics but that's what
9:25
we're asking um what is quantum gravity

u the problem of um understanding the
9:32
the quantum aspect the quantum
9:34
properties of space and time is is still
9:37
open we have theories I my me and my
9:40
friends and and my colleagues uh have
9:44
been working on this um uh theory of
9:48
uh for decades. It's called loop quantum
9:50
gravity. It might be right but we don't
9:52
know because it has not been tested yet.

So in one sense it's very conservative
9:58
as a way of thinking because it's it's

based on the idea let's we have
10:02
discovered something about the universe
10:04
quantum mechanics let's take it
10:06
seriously we have discovered something
10:07
about the universe generative TV let's
10:10
take this seriously what does this imply

together and it's very
10:16
it's very conservative but then it
10:18
becomes very radical because uh it means
10:21
that space has quantum properties and
10:23
time has quantum properties It is. So it

means that space is made by quanta as
10:29
this granularity and so is time. Uh but

not only that that space and time
10:35
themselves have this relational
10:38
property. They're not things by themsel.

They're ways in which various things
10:42
affect one another. So it's a it's a

really new way of thinking about the
10:49
Um a lot of contemporary theoretical

physics is different. It's sort of based
10:56
on the same old conceptual scheme trying
10:59
to guess something new. What about these

equation can be changed? What about the
11:04
new particles? What about the world is
11:06
made by strings? What about the many
11:09
dimensions? What about the other words?

It's a I don't think it's good way of
11:15
going ahead understanding the world. We
11:17
understand the world either because we
11:18
have new data or because we take it
11:20
seriously what I have learned so far and
11:23
we try to work out the consequences

and this is a conceptual work. It's a
11:29
theoretical work but it's also a
11:31
philosophical work. Um so I think that
11:34
the physics of the 20th century it's
11:37
truly pushing us into a new philosophy a
11:40
new way of thinking. It's not completely
11:42
new. I mean it's ideas which were around
11:46
um but it forces us towards certain way
11:48
of think about the world and away from
11:51
other ways of thinking about the world.

The world is not made by things. It's
11:55
not entities out there. There's not the
11:58
being. The world made is is a flow of

things related to one another that make
12:04
sense by the fact that they're related
12:06
to one another and uh that we understand
12:10
by realizing not by looking for the
12:12
outside but realizing we are part of
12:15
this uh sort of network of relations
12:19
which is reality. And it seems to me

though that there's something different
12:24
about making a measurement of a
12:27
particle. Uh freezing it in time, let's
12:31
say, uh is an electron spin up or spin
12:34
down. Um your relationship
12:39
to that particle and knowing about that
12:41
particle is mediated by uh really
12:46
um technologies of perception.

That seems to me to be really different
12:51
than being in love. So, how do you think
12:56
about different kinds of relationality?

Or is every kind of relation made out of

the same stuff built on the same
13:06
>> Um, that's a fabulous question. It's a
13:09
great question. Um, thank you, Claire.

Um, it's both in my opinion. First of

all, I don't think there is any gap in
13:23
title of my next book is going to be on
13:27
the equality of all things. So, I think
13:30
that measuring an electron um it's a
13:33
complic complex operation that um
13:38
involves the electron itself. Poor poor
13:40
guy is there and it's real. It's it's
13:43
something there. uh but it interacts
13:45
with an apparatus. It's a complicated
13:47
apparatus. There's a lot of technology.
13:49
We read it in terms of our theoretical
13:52
ideas. So what we're really doing is
13:55
applying theory to some phenomena which
13:57
are out there and that that's reality.

We're describing reality. Um it's
14:03
complex relation of things. Now when
14:06
when we when we get in love uh it's
14:09
completely different uh set of relations
14:12
which are around but it's also a complex
14:16
relations of things and like electron it
14:19
can be described in different manners.

Um I can be a poet and express or try to
14:25
express uh the unique feeling of um

happiness, excitement, absoluteness,
14:33
total change which is to get in love. I
14:36
can be a medical doctor and describing
14:39
what happened in my body. I can be a um
14:42
a person studying the the the the neuro
14:45
neurological aspect of that or the
14:47
chemical aspect of that. I'm not I'm
14:50
always describing the same phenomenon.

It's not one is right, one is wrong.

There are level of descriptions. Some
14:57
are more appropriate, some are less
14:59
appropriate. Uh some work well, some do

not work well. Um but it's always the
15:05
same thing happening. It's just reality
15:06
happening. And reality happening is just
15:09
reality happening. Whether it's a moon

going around the earth, a ball falling
15:15
on the ground, or me getting in love
15:17
with a person, that's my view of the
15:21
world. There's a deep equality of levels

between between all the things. And
15:26
there are many languages we have to
15:27
describe um reality which are coherent
15:31
with one another even if they are
15:33
distinct. Can you talk about this

uh from the perspective of your new work
15:40
on uh consciousness? What you're
15:43
describing to me, Carlo, is
15:47
you're you're a physicist. The world is
15:49
real. The world is material. Love isn't
15:52
just um oxytocin and serotonin and and
15:56
endorphins um dopamine flooding the
15:58
brain in particular ways. So, it's not
16:02
just chemistry, but it's an entanglement
16:05
of relationships that include hormones
16:09
and chemistry. How does that all link up
16:14
to the conscious experience of knowing
16:17
you're in love or enjoying poetry? Is
16:21
that all materialist, but it's just
16:22
different layers together?

>> Yes and no. Once again um to say that if
16:33
situation obey certain simple uh laws
16:37
doesn't mean that we understand it
16:41
because uh the the simple laws are just
16:44
a some regularities that reduce the the
16:49
infinite possibility of just logical
16:51
facts. So saying if I get in love with
16:54
chemistry, it's just silly because also
16:58
a a glass of water is just chemistry.

That's not interesting. What is

interesting is that chemistry of the
17:05
glass of water is very different than
17:06
the chemistry of of a person in love.

Okay. Now, do we know the language for

describing specifically the chemistry of
17:13
a person in love? No. Only a little bit.

Only some bit little chunks. You've

mentioned some of them. But the
17:20
complexity of going on far um goes
17:24
beyond what can be said in chemical
17:26
terms and even more what can be said in
17:30
uh physical terms. So to say that

everything is when we get in love
17:34
everything is chemistry or our
17:35
consciousness everything is chemistry.

First of all why chemistry I mean why
17:39
not physics then or why not basic
17:41
biology? I mean all all these levels are
17:43
good but all these levels are completely
17:45
insufficient. So no they do not describe
17:49
what happens when we are in love. We
17:51
cannot uh we have we need another
17:53
language. We need another set of
17:55
concepts. But we make a mistake if we
18:00
um there is a metaphysical gap which is
18:04
uh sort of breaking the sort of
18:07
underlying description. And now I come
18:09
to your question about consciousness.

um American philosopher, Australian
18:16
philosopher is David Chalmer who has
18:19
separated the famously two problem of
18:22
consciousness. The easy problem he
18:25
called the easy problem and what he
18:26
called the hard problem and the easy
18:28
problem is everything can be in
18:31
principle said about the phenomena of
18:35
consciousness if we could understand all
18:37
possible signs uh about it. all possible
18:41
physical, all possible psychology, all
18:42
possible all everything that could be
18:44
that and then he says suppose we could
18:46
have um solved all that there would
18:49
remain an open problem which is what he
18:52
called the hard problem of consciousness
18:53
>> and the hard problem is understanding
18:56
what according to David Chalmer's what

>> um that that calculating the distance um
19:03
between you and me would be very
19:05
straightforward with a physics well with
19:09
>> but figuring out what is red.

>> Figuring out what is red or the taste of

chocolate or the feeling of being being

in love. These qualia are irreducible

phenomena in the world that somehow

within Talmer's framework elude

quantification, understanding,

>> Exactly. And I think that um the

distinction is brilliant. So what could

be understood so to say scientifically

from what would the problem will remain

open after all that. But I think David

Chalmer completely misnamed these two

problem because what we call the easy

problem is nothing easy there. It's

enormously complicated. It's extremely

complicated to understand what happens

when I taste chocolate or even more when

I uh when I'm in love or when I have a

emotion one kind of the other. So the

easy problem is hard but what he calls

the hard problem namely whatever remain

open after I have uh understood that

that's easy in my opinion that's

extremely easy because that's a false

problem the answer to that problem is

the great riddle the answer of the

there's no problem. What is the qualia

then you you drink more wine and you

barolo and then you start distinguishing

different kind of Keiantes. Uh

>> Yes. I I prefer barolos but I I love

>> Oh that's a subtle discussion.

But Carlo, can you tell me why measuring

the distance between the two of us with

a ruler is harder than you knowing what

chocolate tastes like?

Well, you're saying that they're saying

that they're more immediate to us. Um,

there are many things which are more
21:39
immediate to us because uh um the easy
21:43
problem is complicated.

Namely, um when we say consciousness,

which by the way, it's a very modern
21:53
uh notion. Um nobody talked about

consciousness a few a few centuries ago.

Um if not in moral terms, which is not

what we mean together. Consciousness

doesn't even have good translation in
22:10
There's no word for that. The problem

with consciousness is that everybody

means something else. Okay, for some

people to be conscious is like to be

awake versus to be asleep. For other is

to have to perceive. For other is to

have a self idea of oneself.

To other is just a awareness. Um just

being aware I'm I'm aware that you're

there. I know that you are there. So I

have some awareness. So therefore I'm

conscious. To others is even something

more generic. Is a vague sense of

distinction of me from the rest.

It's for others is the capacity of using

the noun I okay or me. So people talk us

this were the same things but these are

completely different things right my my

cat certainly has awareness of a lot of

things and has a a rich emotional life a

sensory life which is compared to mine

but I don't think spend time reflect

self-reflecting about its own identity

it doesn't care it cares about mice and

and and me and and and and

being pet and sitting in the sun so The

consciousness is extremely confused and

vague term and we are making a big deal

of it. We shouldn't we should just break

it apart in a variety of different
23:31
notions which are all interest to study.

For instance uh in our own life

we have the experience of being awake or
23:43
asleep and sleep with dreams sleep

without dreams. Oh that's super

interesting. What's the difference

between this? what different is going on

in our brain, in our body, in our

relation with the outside

um in these cases. That's a good

>> But do you think there's something

uniting um when you break out these

questions of consciousness? Is there a a

through line? Um for instance the cat

you were saying is about self awareness.

>> the cat doesn't reflect about itself

have self-reflection.

>> I imagine it doesn't.

>> Yeah. So is this quality of

self-reflection essential to the quality

of consciousness no matter how we might

>> It's a matter of definition. It's like

is having a cover essential for a book?

Well, yeah. Do you want to call book

book without cover? You want to call it

book is up to you. It's not there's no

It's a wrong idea to ask what is the

essence of something. There's no essence

of something. There are names we give to

classes of phenomena. These names are

completely arbitrary. We're interested

studying how these phenomena are, how

relate to one another, what we can say

about them. Not to ask what is to be a

book. There's no what is to be a book. I

mean there is a You know somebody wrote

stuff on paper and printed it and we

call them book. Now a notebook is a

book. Well yes and no. I mean it's not

that's a bad question. So where where do

we want to put the label consciousness

is totally arbitrary.

There's no the essence of consciousness.

There are many phenomena. All of this

can be understood. There is no mystery.

>> So consciousness as a category is laden

historical meaning. um also a particular

uh social meaning now. Um so while it's

a academic category now that

intellectuals can can talk about and

have conferences about it wasn't really

something that Buddhists were naming as

such uh thousands of years ago. So can

you talk about the history of

consciousness and how you see the
26:06
category of consciousness now amidst

>> Yes, you touched many things. Um

one aspect of this and let me just fall

back to books for a moment. Um is that

when we think about our own conscious

there's a deep linguistic aspect of it.

So one thing I find fascinating it's a

question not what consciousness is but
26:32
how much uh this extremely developed
26:35
language that our species has developed
26:37
as a species not as a recent
26:39
civilization we don't even know since
26:42
when this is we're very confused about
26:44
the origin of language how much this has
26:47
changed um our perception of ourself so
26:51
the question what's the difference
26:53
between me and a cat it's some extent
26:57
connected to language and so um how much

giving a linguistic uh account of
27:04
reality uh changes the way of perceiving
27:07
reality that's that's a that's a great
27:09
question for me um and staying still on
27:13
the on the long term sort of humankind

um time scales um no doubt we are social
27:22
animals um erh uh like our cousins a
27:28
great apes uh but much more so because
27:30
we make a much larger uh structure. So

no doubt uh the language and uh uh our
27:38
brain function have developed also in in
27:44
um to this complicated social relations

we have. So I think a lot of my sense of

when I mean when I think about me, what

I'm really referring to is how my
28:04
friends, my mom, my lover, my all the

people, my enemies look at me. And this
28:10
um and is the way I look at them. I know

how they look at me. And this back and
28:15
forth between images that construct our

social identities. So the self it's it's

very much a social build up
28:26
in in some sense. Okay. Um which doesn't

change the fact that animals which are
28:30
not social have some sort of self
28:33
different different kind but but very
28:35
different I think for for this re
28:38
reason. Now historically
28:41
uh we know I learn that the the way
28:45
different civilization described
28:48
um the inner working of a person has
28:50
changed a lot. Um we know famously that
28:54
in Homer at in the early Greek
28:57
civilization there are no words that

correspond to a person directly thinking
29:03
meditating um deliberating
29:07
having ideas taking decisions in the

Iliad when when describes somebody

having an idea it's always a god that
29:14
comes and and and gives the person an
29:16
idea so it's a different language for
29:18
describing what happens and the modern
29:20
uh um the modern western notion of self
29:24
and conscious is really modern. Uh maybe
29:26
it has a root in St. Augustine. So there
29:29
are some root in late antiquity. Um but
29:33
there's nothing like that in in
29:36
antiquity even if it is extremely
29:38
developed cultural and intellectual
29:40
tradition of course around the
29:42
Mediterranean. China and India as far as
29:45
I know are different and different among
29:48
themselves. India is closer to uh to the
29:51
west to the Mediterranean. It had more
29:54
relations of course back to millennia
29:56
ago. Um and Buddhism had a long
29:59
reflection about the self which

interesting got in two different
30:04
directions. One is um a lot of attention
30:07
about the self. there's a large very
30:10
developed Buddhist psychologist
30:13
psychology traditionally um but also in
30:17
the opposite direction there is the idea
30:20
that the self is illusurary that there's
30:21
no self um which an idea I like a lot
30:24
and I think I like a lot because it
30:26
heals us from this illusion of
30:29
essentiality I am this um cartisian or
30:34
better hideer idea that we have a direct
30:36
intuition about being because we are um
30:40
I think there is something deeply wrong

there in the sense that it gives a
30:46
uh to to to consciousness the first

person which is illusion silly right

when when when we put put ourself in the

center we know we're making a mistake

right we're little things in the huge

cosmos there are billions of galaxies

and galaxies billions of stars and then

there's earth and the earth is a it's

very big and we know don't even know

what happening in its center and there's
