0:17

iconic it's a word marketing people just

0:19

love to beat us over the head with isn't

0:21

it but in the case of the maruti Suzuki

0:23

Swift I think it's Justified you see we

0:26

don't have too many truly iconic cars in

0:28

the Indian car market but the Swift is

0:30

certainly one of them and that you know

0:32

it doesn't have anything to do with its

0:33

price with its spec sheet or even its

0:36

sales which are by the way incredible

0:38

it's regularly in the top five selling

0:40

cars in India and at the moment it's on

0:41

the verge of 3 million units in fact by

0:43

the time you watch this it'll probably

0:45

have cross that but no to be iconic is

0:48

something far more emotional it's about

0:50

the look it's about the feel it's about

0:52

aspirational value and it's about

0:54

winning the hearts of the people and

0:57

when you think about it maruti Suzuki a

1:00

brand that's generally All About Numbers

1:02

that's quite a tall order and it has big

1:05

shoes to fill well here we are

1:08

Generation 4 Swift I'm Gavin dza and

1:11

have they done

1:13

it over the course of this video we'll

1:15

try and answer that question is it nicer

1:18

on the inside have they modernized it

1:20

enough and does it still drive like a

1:23

dream but first and maybe most important

1:25

of all does it look like a Swift

1:32

to be iconic is to be instantly

1:34

recognizable and I think they've

1:35

succeeded in this regard but what do you

1:37

think let us know down in the comments

1:38

do you like the look of the new Swift if

1:40

you do give this video a thumbs up and I

1:42

hope you subscribed to autocar India and

1:44

have clicked that Bell icon to stay

1:45

notified but yeah one look at this and

1:47

you know it's the brand new Swift now

1:50

it's of course entirely new but they've

1:52

done that familiarity by keeping the

1:54

shape more or less the same as it's

1:56

always been that means narrow at the top

1:59

slightly wide and rounded at the bottom

2:01

the contrast roof sure helps but even

2:03

without it you know this is a Swift at

2:05

the very first glance but yep everything

2:07

is brand new and it starts with that new

2:09

grill that's gloss black on top variants

2:12

and these headlamps that come upwards

2:14

like this and have an L-shaped DRL

2:16

pattern dare I say it looks a little bit

2:19

Maserati but hey if you're going to draw

2:21

inspiration you might as well do it from

2:23

the best I think it comes together

2:25

really well the Suzuki logo has moved up

2:27

from the grill to the Bonnet and

2:29

speaking of the Bonnet it's this new

2:31

clamshell Arrangement which on its own

2:33

is really quite interesting it's just

2:35

that the execution in places is quite

2:38

distracting like it creates a bit of a

2:39

gap here above the headlamp and you will

2:41

constantly be looking at that but

2:43

overall I think it works well with the

2:45

Swift design that's what it's like from

2:46

the front let's go look at the side and

2:48

the

2:52

back now at the side again the profile

2:54

is quite recognizable and that's what

2:56

makes it a swift it's the roof line that

2:58

tapers slightly towards the the end that

3:00

really gives the game away now one thing

3:02

that's changed from the last generation

3:03

Swift is that the rear door handle used

3:06

to be up here in the C pillar and now

3:08

it's down here on the door in a

3:09

conventional position another superb

3:11

detail I think is this thick very

3:14

prominent line that runs the length of

3:16

the car from that clam shell Bonnet all

3:18

the way to the tail lamp and these

3:20

pronounced flanks both at the front and

3:22

the rear with a little bit of a crease

3:24

of their own it just gives a lot of

3:26

muscularity to the Swift and sets it

3:28

apart from your average family

3:32

hatchback I do wish though they've gone

3:34

for a larger size of wheel maybe 16in

3:37

it's stuck with 15-in wheels and though

3:39

they look quite nice just a little bit

3:41

meek for the sporty Hatchback model

3:43

don't you

3:45

think the rear in my opinion is the

3:47

least interesting angle of the new Swift

3:49

yes it is instantly recognizable once

3:51

again but it's not particularly unique

3:53

like the rest of the car is these tail

3:55

lamps for example they're a squarish

3:57

shape and they have this interesting LED

4:00

light pattern on the inside which I

4:01

quite like but the rest of it is very

4:03

much hallogen now at the back here you

4:05

do get the Suzuki logo the rear camera

4:08

the Swift logo a rear washer and wiper

4:11

and this rather standard looking antenna

4:13

not a shark fin one some people might

4:15

have preferred that now if you open the

4:17

boot it's about 265 L which is a good

4:21

size for a hatchback and the space is

4:23

quite usable yes there's a bit of a lip

4:25

to load stuff over but it's not as bad

4:27

as say some compact SUVs so I think

4:30

you'll be okay for a weekend trip in the

4:33

new

4:35

Swift All Things Considered then I think

4:38

the exterior of the new Swift is a job

4:40

well done by maruti but can we say the

4:43

same about the

4:45

inside when it comes to the new Swift's

4:47

interior I have mixed feelings but let's

4:49

start with the stuff that I really like

4:51

for one it feels very much a Swift

4:53

Driving position the seating position is

4:55

just right get these upright slightly

4:57

upright a pillars that are

4:59

characteristic of a Swift and you get

5:01

big glass areas at least for the front

5:03

half of the cabin I also like the

5:05

steering wheel yes it's quite familiar

5:07

but it works well it's got all the

5:08

controls you need I like that they've

5:10

changed it to gloss black from the old

5:11

silver looks a bit more upmarket and

5:13

Suits the Swift really well I like those

5:15

diales yes they're traditional analog

5:18

they're not digital but I think that's

5:19

okay in this segment plus they're really

5:21

really clear and easy to read with big

5:24

fonts and a nice color mid and I really

5:26

really like those needles they're very

5:28

sporty looking and it all comes this

5:30

very cool sporty binle what else I like

5:34

that there's been an improvement in

5:35

plastic quality and fit and finish

5:37

overall compared to the last Swift

5:39

there's a bit of grain and texture to

5:41

the Plastics and there's also some

5:43

relief in the form of this silver finish

5:45

here the gloss black for the AC controls

5:48

speaking of which the AC controls I

5:49

think they work really well yes they are

5:51

from the Baleno and the FRS but using

5:53

these toggles is easy on the move and

5:55

these physical buttons down here I also

5:58

like that this wireless charger can hold

6:01

a very large

6:03

smartphone and there's a nice lip to

6:05

prevent it from sliding around and these

6:08

seats they're comfy they're sporty

6:11

they're familiar but they're nice and

6:13

snug and Soo the car's character really

6:15

well I also like those speaker grills at

6:17

an interesting touch they look like

6:19

they've been maybe borrowed from an Audi

6:20

but the way they executed is quite up

6:22

market and now onto the stuff I'm not

6:25

such a big fan of yes plastic quality

6:27

and fit and finish have improved but

6:29

it's just all so dull and gray this

6:32

could have been a great opportunity to

6:34

liven things up with a bit more color

6:36

but it's just not this texture here well

6:39

finished but it just could have been

6:40

nice these AC vents also very nice but

6:43

you might miss them because they just

6:44

blend into the background even over here

6:47

a little bit more soft touch material

6:48

would not have gone a mess it's all hard

6:50

plastic apart from this elbow pad over

6:53

here and of course the classic Swift

6:55

window switches are back they will never

6:58

get rid of those storage in this cabin

7:01

is not great either you get a pretty

7:04

small glove box only average size door

7:06

Pockets these cup holders can take small

7:09

bottles and maybe a little bit more than

7:12

this but they're not huge and down here

7:14

you only get tiny cubby holes there's no

7:16

armrest or box to keep stuff in and

7:19

finally this touchcreen I really like

7:21

the touchcreen it's a 9in unit and

7:23

maruti smartplay pro interface is really

7:26

nice it gives you lots of information

7:27

it's quite slick but I don't like the

7:30

fact that it's propped so high up on the

7:32

dashboard and has such a huge housing

7:35

there 3 Ines on either side of it of

7:37

just thick black plastic that doesn't

7:39

serve any function and though you can

7:40

see the road just fine it's a constant

7:43

distraction that's in your line of sight

7:44

I wish they had placed it a little bit

7:46

lower but that said they have added

7:49

quite a few features to the new Swift so

7:51

let's go take a look at them right now

7:54

in tops spec ZXI plus guys the Swift is

7:56

well equipped with the likes of

7:58

automatic LED headlamps a wireless phone

8:00

charger autoclimate control a rear view

8:03

camera and cruise control the

8:05

aformentioned 9-in touchcreen meanwhile

8:07

is slick to use and includes Wireless

8:09

carplay and Android auto connected carch

8:11

and even some voice commands clearly

8:14

then the front seat occupants are well

8:16

catered to but what about those in the

8:18

back the back seat proposition hasn't

8:21

changed too much from the previous Swift

8:23

it's got about the same amount of space

8:25

as before and that's to say it's pretty

8:27

good I'm just under 5'8 that's set to my

8:30

position I've got plenty of knee room

8:32

and quite a bit of head room too of

8:35

course you have a larger driver and a

8:36

larger passenger behind that could

8:38

change a little bit there's loads of

8:41

space for your feet under the front seat

8:42

though thigh support on this rather flat

8:44

bench is not all that great I'm pretty

8:46

impressed with the view out of this

8:48

window and this rear quarter glass does

8:50

make quite a difference it does give you

8:52

that slight sense of Greater airiness

8:54

compared to the previous Swift where

8:56

there was just a door handle in that

8:58

space over there now interestingly

9:00

there's no rear armrest back here and

9:02

that means no chance of rear cup holders

9:03

either in fact the doors just get one

9:05

slim bottle holder each there's no

9:08

Center headrest but there is a

9:10

three-point seat belt for the center

9:12

passenger there are now AC vents which

9:14

is a nice addition to the Swift a usba a

9:17

and a USB C port and while there is a

9:20

pocket in the back of this seat there's

9:21

no pocket on the back of this one for

9:23

some

9:23

reason so things are still very much

9:26

geared to the driver in the Swift but

9:28

now we have to safety and as I mentioned

9:30

the Swift now gets three point seat

9:32

belts for all seats as standard also

9:35

standard are six airbags ESC and hillh

9:38

hold assist which should help with a

9:40

crash test rating should it be submitted

9:42

for

9:45

one incidentally the new Swift scored

9:48

four stars at a 90% rating in the Japan

9:51

endcap test but it's also worth

9:53

remembering that the previous India spec

9:55

Swift which uses the same hardtech

9:57

platform as the new one scor just one

10:00

star under the new Global endcap

10:02

protocols in 2022 we just have to wait

10:05

and see and with that let's hit the road

10:08

because we Doo want to see what all the

10:10

fuss is about under the

10:12

hood it's good to be back at the wheel

10:14

of a swift again a brand new Swift but

10:17

one that gives you a very familiar feel

10:20

from the driver's seat of course there's

10:22

one fundamental change right away and

10:24

that's the engine it's called the z2e

10:27

and while it still displaces one .2 L

10:30

it's down from 4 cylinders to

10:33

three it's a big change and a big

10:35

departure from the petrol engines of the

10:37

Swift of the past because they've always

10:39

been four-cylinder ones right from the

10:41

g13b which started it out the 1.3 to the

10:45

various K12 1.2 L engines and here we

10:48

are in the Z series with a

10:51

three-cylinder

10:55

the headline figures are Ari fuel

10:58

economy ratings of 25.75 kpl for the AMT

11:02

and 24.80 kpl for the manual what

11:06

definitely helped was the engine Auto

11:08

Stop start function but it has to be

11:09

noted that this is not maruti's shvs

11:12

mild hybrid system however what's really

11:14

got the commment sections up in arms is

11:16

that with 82 horsepower and 112 n m it's

11:20

less powerful than the previous engine

11:23

and right away let me put you at ease

11:26

because it is a very very good

11:30

[Applause]

11:34

engine first Common issue with

11:36

three-cylinder engines refinement it's

11:38

very good yeah you can hear a little bit

11:40

of Rumble and clatter when you're

11:42

standing outside the car but when you're

11:44

sat inside it's really not that bad it

11:47

won't be quite as smooth as the

11:48

4-cylinder K12 engines and yes you'll

11:51

feel a little bit of Rumble through the

11:52

pedal as you go up but again I'm

11:55

nitpicking here on its own in isolation

11:58

it is actually very very

12:01

good as an advantage what it brings Is

12:04

some much needed low end torque now the

12:06

reason I say much needed is because as a

12:09

city car you need that to get going and

12:11

stop and go traffic yes the Swift is

12:13

meant to be the fun to drive one but you

12:15

won't always be revving to the red line

12:18

speaking of the red line that is now

12:20

down to 6,000 RPM so it's a little bit

12:23

lower and yes before you even get to

12:25

6,000 you'll feel a drop off in power

12:27

somewhere around 5 and a half so yes

12:30

assuming you are chasing those revs all

12:32

the way to the red line you will feel a

12:33

little disappointed as you get towards

12:35

the end it's a different character not

12:37

what we remember from Swifts of old but

12:40

it's not a bad thing in any way now

12:42

you'll notice I'm not shifting gears

12:44

that's because I'm driving the AMT

12:46

version it has to be said maruti's amts

12:49

have come a very long way and now are

12:51

amongst the best they've gotten a whole

12:53

lot smoother more

12:55

intuitive and once you're driving at a

12:57

relaxed space you really don't notice

12:59

it's

13:02

there the thing is an AMT is an AMT and

13:06

it's always going to give you that head

13:08

knot the moment you start picking up the

13:10

pace if you want to drive quickly and

13:12

you might want to do that in a car like

13:14

the Swift you do have to contend with

13:16

that lag that little Gap that head knod

13:18

that comes between gears and the harder

13:21

you push the more prominent it

13:25

is I suppose it's good that there is a

13:28

manual mode for when you want to drive

13:30

fast and when you don't want to drive

13:32

fast the automatic mode is possible but

13:34

I can't help but feel that this would

13:36

have been a great opportunity to

13:38

introduce a better gearbox for the Swift

13:40

a new engine coming in perhaps they

13:42

could have brought in a new gearbox too

13:44

maybe a CVT if not a torque converter

13:47

and I know they had it in the last

13:48

generation as well but the AMT is just

13:51

not in keeping with the sporty and

13:53

premium nature of the Swift

13:57

[Music]

13:59

now they say they've made some changes

14:00

to the rear suspension they've stiffened

14:02

it up in the interest of better handling

14:05

and I think that works I'm on a highway

14:07

right now but a little while ago I was

14:09

on a slightly Winding Road and the body

14:12

control is just very very good in this

14:14

car the old one the third generation

14:17

Swift got a little bit roly poly but

14:19

they've tied it down nicely with this

14:21

fourth

14:25

generation has it compromised the ride

14:27

quality not too badly but rear seat

14:29

passengers might feel bumps and portoles

14:31

a little bit more than in the previous

14:33

car overall however it's an improvement

14:36

riding with greater maturity helped also

14:39

by a revised front stabilizer

14:41

bar what has also seen a market

14:44

Improvement is the steering gone to the

14:46

days when Swift steerings would not

14:48

return to Center where they were overly

14:50

light that in between phase somewhere

14:52

between generation 2 and a lot of

14:54

Generation 3 it's all being corrected

14:57

now I'm happy to report there's a lot

14:59

more weight in the steering it gives you

15:01

a lot more confidence out on the highway

15:03

and through the corners and it's getting

15:05

back slowly to that original Swift feel

15:09

it's not there yet but it's a step in

15:11

the right

15:15

direction that is a huge Revelation the

15:18

Swift is correcting course to return to

15:20

its Dynamic Heyday the engine is

15:23

surprisingly good too but to experience

15:25

it at its best you simply cannot have

15:28

the am

15:33

[Music]

15:38

now that is more like it a manual is the

15:41

gearbox this new engine deserves and

15:43

indeed what a swift

15:47

deserves now that I have better control

15:50

over the revs I can tell you that yes if

15:52

you keep it in a certain Zone close to

15:55

the 4,000 RPM mark you do get a lot of

15:59

that three-cylinder

16:03

grumel but I also have to say that it's

16:05

not a terrible sounding noise in fact it

16:08

reminds me a lot of Ford Dragon series

16:10

engines the 1.2 and the 1.5 both three-

16:13

cylinders which are some of the best

16:15

three-cylinder engines out

16:18

there also very apparent is the new

16:21

hydraulically actuated clutch it's no

16:23

longer cable operated and you can tell

16:26

that in the sort of heft with which it

16:28

moves it's very smooth and not Snappy

16:30

like the one before that said I do feel

16:33

the clutch pedal travel is a little on

16:34

the long side slightly detracting from

16:36

that quick shifting driving pleasure but

16:39

really I'm nitpicking at this point it's

16:41

a very good transmission the gear shifts

16:43

as ever are nice and light and slick and

16:46

Slot into place with that satisfying

16:51

click and here with the manual you can

16:53

really get the most out of this new

16:55

engine you know when to keep it at the

16:57

low revs like when you're moving around

16:59

town and you just want that nice lowend

17:01

talk and when you're cruising out of the

17:03

highway like I am now you can move it up

17:04

into the mid-range which is just above

17:07

3,000

17:16

RPM priced between 6.49 lakh to 9.5 lakh

17:21

rupees X showroom the Swift has

17:23

predictably moved up in price with the

17:25

new generation making it more expensive

17:27

than a grandite 10 Neos and putting it

17:29

awfully close to its Big Brother the

17:31

Baleno the good news is that the Swift

17:33

makes more of an effort to set itself

17:35

apart this time thanks to its new z2e

17:38

engine although let's face it this will

17:40

find its way into other maruti small

17:42

cars in due time but it's also thanks to

17:44

its return to fun to drive Dynamics and

17:47

a more modern take on the classic Swift

17:49

design that will make you love this

17:51

hatchback as much as you did its

17:54

predecessors iconic you bet

17:58
