【隨便年薪千萬台幣?】揭秘加州軟體工程師每一個級別的薪水細節
Hello everyone, I'm Ray Chen. My job is to knock on the city's door in front of the computer, which is the legendary software engineer. Currently, I work in North America. Today, I'm going to reveal how much money a software engineer can make in North America. So why am I thinking of doing this episode today? Because if you don't have any personal experience or friends who are reliable to you,
It's hard to find useful information online. Many of these things are written on the Internet. It's very messy. So I hope this video can help you. If you are interested in how much you can make in 2020, Or if you want to come to North America to work in the future, I hope there is some reliable information. I will help you with it here.
First of all, software engineers are very widely defined. In North America, whether you are a front end, a back end or a DevOps, it is actually very likely to be called a software engineer. Many times you enter a big company, you will use the title of software engineer as a title, instead of the title of front end or back end. When you are really assigned to which group or project, this determines which technology you will be exposed to. As for new companies, there will be no more professional titles. Usually the smaller the company, the more technical the technology level will be.
Before we talk about the salary, I want to talk about some factors that directly affect the salary. The first factor is your city. The salary you can talk about has a very big relationship with your city. It is very likely that two people do the same thing in the same company, but because they are in different cities, the salary of the other person is more than one times higher than yours.
These are the three areas that North American R&D engineers work the most, and are the most paid and concentrated. Today, I will use the more representative "Base Area" or "Rule Area" to be the index for today's "Payment Lockdown". Why is it called "Base Area"? "Base Area" is the most representative place for high-tech, talented and highly skilled people. It is also the home of many high-tech leaders in the world. "Base Area" is also the origin of many innovative companies around the world. If you are a R&D engineer, you must know this place.
and is also a very impressive figure in the world of software engineers. The second is the company itself. Not every company in Southern California can have the same salary conditions. This profession has a certain career here. Not every company is willing to spend a lot of money to dig up some talents. So today's video is about some more representative mainstream companies such as Facebook, Google, or Airbnb. The third is your own ability. You need to know that there are a lot of talents in this world.
In this place where the god level characters gather, it is possible to walk on the road and see the next Bill Gates. Then we have a normal to non-normal normal version of the passer-by data today. This eliminates the strange data of those genius children who open and hang outside. Okay, before we get into the main topic, we need to understand the total salary of software engineers. Usually your annual salary is composed of four parts.
The basic salary is based on your level and knowledge. Each company has a fixed range and a small space for interest. The basic salary is paid to your bank account every two weeks.
Second, you can take the money to pay for the job. Why do you need to pay for this? Many people move to another company or start a new job. They need to move closer to the company and work more conveniently. As you know, renting a house in Silicon Valley is one of the most expensive expenses. Many tenants will ask you to pay for the first month rent or deposit.
This is for your trouble.
Third, the performance bonus. You can imagine it as a year-end bonus. It's a bonus that doesn't have 100% guarantee. The company will distribute this bonus every year or every quarter. Many big companies will name your target performance bonus when they talk about offers or signing.
usually 10-15% of your capital. If the company is developing normally, and you complete your tasks according to the time, you are very likely to get the full 10-15%. Of course, in special cases, such as being signed up or the world economy is not in a good condition, it will affect how much you will get in the end.
Lastly, stock or equity. This will affect your core value. You should know that the core value of a company is fixed within the industry or within the company. If the hiring manager wants to help you achieve a higher core value, he can start from here. Usually, the company will directly give the stock
For example, if you have a $150,000 stock today, then we use Google's stock price to say that one stock is $1,500. Then when you talk about the offer, when you sign a contract, it will write on it that $1,500 per stock is the fixed price. You will get a total of 100 stocks.
When do you get 100 shares? Usually, companies give you a 4-year distribution plan. That means you can get 1/4 of the shares every year. That means you get 25 shares every year. Of course, some companies will give you a very natural distribution plan. For example, some A companies will give you 5% in the first year, 45% in the second year, 40% in the third year, and 40% in the fourth year. This means that you can work for another 30 years. If you don't work for another 30 years, you're basically not worth it. This kind of pressure behavior is
In addition, if the company's stock price rises every year after you join, it means your salary will rise too. So when choosing a company, it's important to look at its prospects. For example, a company's stock price will double in three years. It means your salary will double in three years. Alright, enough of the nonsense. Let's get into the main topic today. The first level is L3, which is what we call a "newbie" or a rookie who has only worked for one or two years.
Usually, you won't be stuck at this level for more than 2 years. If you have some work experience that jumps over, you will usually go straight to the next level. Students who are good at this level can reach nearly annual salary of $200,000. I have also seen many people who are more than this number. If you have internship experience or special talent, you will probably exceed this standard value. The second level is L4. Usually, people at this level have 2 to 6 years of work experience.
L4 is also the highest level of people. The annual salary is also relatively wide. In a company, there may be 10 people you meet, and 5 of them are all L4. If you just graduated from a higher school, such as a master's degree or a doctorate degree, or you have an internship experience of one to two years, it is very likely that you will directly choose an L3 and come to L4. Many people who have worked for 5 or 6 years are still at the level of L4, which is very normal. The salary of this level is relatively wide.
Many people only need 1-2 years to be born from L3 to L4 Of course, there are also many very powerful people in L4 I have seen many people who can earn up to $400,000 in L4 I will post another video later on how to become the top of the pyramid in your current level of negotiation If you don't want to miss it, please like and subscribe! Okay, the next level is L5, which is a senior engineer Usually people in this level have 4-15 years of work experience
You can only become a self-taught engineer if you have the ability to do it independently or lead a team to complete the project. Note why I write 4-15 years of experience here. The reason is that many people are stuck in this position for a long time. Because if you don't have any special contribution, it's purely a year's worth of experience, you will have a hard time getting into the next level.
Many people want to stay in a big company and live a stable life. It will be easier to rest here. But it doesn't mean that your salary will not increase. If you are really poor today, there is nothing to do. The salary is still every year or every quarter will have a small change. Next level, L6 Staff Engineer Usually have 8 to 20 years of work experience
This level is the legendary "experts in the private sector" If you don't have a special contribution or a good chance to win, it's not easy to reach this level. The salary is also relatively considerable at this level. Usually at this level, when you distribute projects, you will bring a small team or you are the one in the team who knows everything. Look at your personality or interest, you can choose to turn to management savings or continue to work in technical positions if you have no interest in management at all.
At this level, you have to take on some of the responsibilities of the company's many projects. However, the reward is also quite considerable. The next level, L7, is Senior Staff. Actually, it's the advanced version of the previous level, L6. Usually, people at this level have 10 to 20 years of work experience.
This level is basically based on your long-term development and connections within the company. It's rare to get an offer at this level without any direct money. Once you reach this level, you have enough money. Your only concern is how to spend it. You are also very familiar with the company's business. You have worked in the company for several years. You also have a certain contribution to the company's development. This is the legendary person who is very close to the god level. Next level, L8, Principal Engineer. Principle? Principle?
The principle of a "believing engineer" Usually people who can get here have more than 10 years of work experience Alright, let me show off my skills Usually people of this level are doing some research and discussion in the company, discussing some deep technical issues The company's very important major project's chief executive is also these people They are also familiar with the company's senior officials After all, this type of person is also considered a rare animal
In a big company, there are probably less than 100 people. So they usually have more freedom to do what they want to do. The leadership of the company also often allows them to play freely. You can do the principle level in Silicon Valley. Which means your annual salary may have broken $1 million. The next level is L9. Probably the highest level of engineers in technical positions.
You're not wrong. I won't introduce any god who has more than 2 million years of experience. I think I can't reach that level in my life. After all, it's a legend. Usually, this kind of person publishes academic articles in the company. Maybe he does some patent work for the company or some mysterious projects. The details of what he does may not be related to ordinary people like me. The range of salary is also very wide. Usually, it's 2 million dollars. Some people can reach more. It depends on how much contribution you make to the company and how much your influence is. Usually, this kind of person will feel like a wind on the road.
Alright, that's the technical development path of software engineers in Silicon Valley. Many people turn to management when they are in L5 and L6. That's not the right way. I will post a video to discuss other ways of software engineers besides technical development. Now is the era of technology is completely out of the question. It's not a mess to share data with you today.
If you search online today, you may find some data that is different from the data I shared today. That's because a lot of data on the internet is the average value of many companies or an office for the past 10 years. So it may be different. Of course, if you come to Silicon Valley today, it is very possible that you have not talked about such a new level.
The situation is different for everyone. Times change very fast. I share these data today for reference only. But I still hope it will help you. Although this money may look a lot, but this is all the income before the tax. In California, as a software engineer, your income after tax is about 60% of your income before tax. In addition, California's spending is really high. Whether it's rent or going out to play, eating and playing, it's easy to lose money. So how much money can you save in the end?
It's really all about the person. It depends on your lifestyle and the influence of your friends and family around you. I will make another video to explain how much it costs to live in California. Okay, that's it for today. If you like my video, please like, subscribe and turn on the notification bell. These are all my experiences and data provided by my friends who work in California. And the data that I got from sharing and summarizing on the internet.
If you are also a software engineer and want to share your salary in California or other areas, please leave a comment below. If you have any questions or any other questions that you want me to share, please leave a comment below. See you next time!
Come on. How about this? You want a treat?
