If we talk about geography, what distinguishes it from other sciences is that it uses a perspective of space. The location or place where a phenomenon occurs is one of the important factors in geography. And usually, these phenomena occur in a region. Maybe you've heard the words region a lot. The region of a beach or mountain, the region of a city and village, the region of Indonesia, the region of Asia.

But what is that area? Can rooms also be considered an area? The territory of the power of Afif. Instead of being confused, let's discuss! The territory is the part of the Earth's surface that can be distinguished by certain characteristics from other parts of the Earth's surface. Each territory has its own characteristics, so it can be distinguished from other territories.

For example, the mountainous area is the surface of the earth that is full of mountains. And this is far different from the beach area whose surface is covered by sand and sea water. Therefore, these two areas can be called separate areas. Well, one area is different from the other based on the aspects of its geography. Still remember, there are physical and social aspects.

The mountainous area and the beach area are different based on the physical aspect. More precisely, the topology. If the industrial area and the residential area are different based on the social aspect. So how do we determine the boundaries of a region or simply, what region is a certain region?

According to geography experts, Richardson, Heget, Cliff, and Frey, the area can be divided into three categories or three types, namely formal, functional, and vernacular areas. Formal areas are areas that have characteristic characteristics that are special and homogeneous or one characteristic only.

The characteristics can be from physical characteristics. For example, the mountainous area is characterized by the presence of many mountains. And these characteristics dominate the area. It means the area is homogeneous. Well, besides physical characteristics, it can also be with social characteristics. For example, in terms of language.

We can say that Indonesia is homogenous in terms of language because everyone can speak Indonesian. This formal region is usually static because it takes a long time to change the main character of the region. The next type of region is functional. Functional regions usually have interactions between components or locations inside.

This interaction is often economic and usually the most active in the center of the region. The surrounding areas function to support activities in the center. For example, the Jabodetabek region. This Jabodetabek region can be said to be a functional region because it has an activity center in Jakarta and neighboring cities such as Bogor, Bekasi, and Tangerang which function to support the main activities in Jakarta.

Functional areas are usually dynamic because the function of the area within the area can change over time. For example, Bekasi, which was originally a city of supporters, because it developed rapidly, could eventually become its own metropolitan area. The last type of area is the vernacular area. The vernacular area is an area that is in the minds of a large number of people. The vernacular area has an important role in cultural identity.

but it doesn't have official or clear limits. So, vernacular regions are formed because of human perception. For example, the city of rain, the city of batik, not Yogyakarta, not Seoul. Well, usually when we talk about regions, there are many terms that are actually similar and often confuse the definition. For example, space, location, region, and area.

What is the difference? Does it all fit into the concept of the region? Well, actually, all of the terms have their own meaning, even though they all point to a place on the Earth's surface. The difference is this, friends. Space is the part of the Earth's surface that can consist of land and water. Space is a common term for a part of the Earth that has no classification whatsoever.

Location is the position on the Earth's surface. If we take Jakarta as a space on the Earth's surface, Monas is one of the locations in that space. So is the President's Palace. The area we've been discussing is the Earth's surface that has homogeneity or similarity, whether it's formal or functional. Another term for the area is region.

Next, area. Area is a part of the region or region that is used for certain things. For example, in the city area, we have industrial areas, residential areas, and office areas. In the forest, we have protected forest areas and nature reserves. In the region, those are the areas that have certain boundaries that are determined by the administration.

such as Bogor, West Java, or the United Nations of the Republic of Indonesia. All have the defined territory boundaries in an administrative way.
