But because their English is not good or they are not confident, they asked me if there is any way to recommend them to learn English or if they want me to share my experience of learning English. To be honest, I'm not very good at English so I'm not very good at sharing my experience of learning English. But based on my experience of living abroad for more than 10 years, I came to the conclusion that many people are quite old.

I think this is probably the most basic threshold for being an software company abroad.

As for other positions, for example, if you want to do a product or if you want to be a manager, there will be more requirements in terms of communication. Because in these positions, you will need more opportunities to use the communication skill. Especially when you are a manager, I think 80% of the work content is actually communicating with others.

So we talked about communication today, but it's not just about talking. When you're writing emails or chatting with your colleagues on Slack, you have to avoid miscommunication. Because when you miscommunicate, the cost will sometimes be higher than you think.

For example, a colleague may have an accident and spend another hour doing something completely wrong. The cost is this one hour. This is actually okay. More serious, it may be that something is broken. Because of miscommunication, it caused a delay in maintenance. Finally, it caused the loss of the company or client. But don't worry too much. Because when you are writing email or Slack, your advantage is that you will have the opportunity to correct your writing.

You can use tools like Grammarly to help you fix your mistakes. Or before you press the send button, you can check it three times to make sure your language is clear. So I think in writing or writing, you don't have to worry too much. Because there are so many tools to use now, it can make you write better and better.

I think the part that Asian people need to improve is the accent. Because when you're interviewing, they're also checking your English accent. As long as you have no problem communicating, and you can pass the language communication, it's actually okay. I think that English ability should be the threshold.

Because he may not be able to write a TOEFL essay like this during the interview. So the content we are talking about today will be more focused on English and oral communication. You may ask me if he has heard of reading and writing in English. What about listening and reading? Actually, I don't think you need to worry too much. Let me talk about my background and how I practice English. How to improve my ability. I was born and raised in Taiwan. I went to Canada to study abroad when I was in high school. Before I went to Canada, my English level was about 70 points in Asia. I got 70 points because I had a poor English class when I was in elementary school.

So the level is not too bad But because it's in Asia, it's 70 points So in fact, communicating with foreigners may be a little bit easier But it's not very smooth And the vocabulary is also very small I don't understand many words and don't know how to use them In addition, I am a person who is not gifted in languages

Even if my mother tongue is Chinese, I hated Chinese classes from elementary to high school. I actually always felt quite rebellious about learning a certain language deliberately. I was rebellious when I was young, and I didn't really take classes seriously. When I first went to Canada, I took ESL for a few months, and took some TOEFL classes, because I was going to go to college. You must take TOEFL.

But to be honest, I only had to take the exam. I didn't have any progress in my English. I just took the exam and got into the school. After I got into the university, I still had to repeat what my classmates said to me. They might not understand what I was saying because of my accent or my poor pronunciation. When did I start to improve my English?

I was actually quite lucky back then. I had a classmate in my class who was very nice. Although he didn't understand what I was saying at first, he wouldn't laugh at my bad English.

He was quite patient when he talked to me. He was my best friend in college. So basically, we would find a place to live as roommates in the class period. So I really entered a 24-hour, year-round, non-stop English environment. From the first year, my classmates couldn't understand what I was talking about. But later, I became more confident in my speech. I also changed a lot of the basic grammar when I spoke.

我覺得這也是最自然的學習一個新的語言的方法。 就像我們從小學中文,不會先學文法, 而是先學會怎麼樣跟別人講話、溝通、聊天。 然後我們從觀察別人講話的方式, 到跟別人講話的這個過程中, 在腦海裡面慢慢的塑造一套融入這個社會的溝通能力, 這個就是語言。

那當然今天我是很幸運能在加拿大這個地方遇到願意跟我當室友,讓我有很多機會練習講英文的這個朋友。 我知道在亞洲其實不太容易找到一個同樣的環境,有相同的機會。 但是我覺得這並不代表說你就沒有機會快速的進步你的口語能力。 因為當時我就算人在加拿大,其實我的英文能力,口說能力有一段時間也是完全沒有任何的進步。 因為要是我身邊的朋友都跟我講中文,或是就是我自己一個人住,我怎麼可能會有機會去練習到說英文呢?

There are many ways to create this environment. For example, you can teach a girlfriend who doesn't speak Chinese, or a boyfriend, or you can say to your partner, "We only speak English as a practice in our daily life." Of course, I know it's a little awkward if you both speak Chinese and speak English.

It really depends on whether you have the will to try The point is that you need to create that environment yourself A place that allows you to speak English If you don't have the ability to go abroad today You can actually spend a little money Find someone who speaks English with you online This is also a pretty good way Because of the COVID-19 I think there will be more opportunities to have this kind of platform Can let you communicate with someone who speaks English online Or you can also spend more money to find a private English tutor Like Cambly is a pretty good platform

I haven't used Cambly before, but I heard that their teachers are good. Many of them are from English speaking countries. If you want to practice by yourself, and you are shy, like me, I practiced Spanish on Duolingo. I think it's great. The overall user experience is also good. And it doesn't cost much. Of course, there are also many great platforms on YouTube. You can follow them. Like Mr. Lee, Mr. Goenbu, and Mr. Ah Di.

Another factor besides the environment is that you need to consider the psychological factor. I know that many people, including myself, are afraid or afraid to speak English at the beginning. Maybe it's not because my English is poor, but more importantly, it's my lack of confidence. Many people are afraid that after speaking, others won't understand, and even laugh at your English grammar or accent. So you choose not to speak at the end, or when you can practice, you choose to escape or use other methods to express. In this case, your English level will not improve. I can guarantee you that no one will be very good at learning a new language at the beginning.

Don't be afraid of what others think of you. Because it's really only very childish or boring people who will laugh at your English. Then I will give you a real example here. I have a colleague in Israel in my previous company. His English is really bad. He speaks one word and one word. Sometimes it feels like he uses a translator to translate it. Then he reads it out one word by one word according to the screen.

But everyone in our company respects him because he is very skilled and he is very responsible and a very reliable person. So we are very patient with him and we will not judge him because of his English level. And he is now my manager. So don't feel that your English is bad and you are not confident or dare not try to cross the line. You need a process to get a good result.

Working as a software engineer in the technology industry, I believe many industries are the same. Really, as long as you have good communication skills, that's enough.
