this is all about and we'll we'll just

run with it everybody out there I'm

thousand dollars less I checked or 20 mm

and just want to thank you I'm with my

partner nyle Scala we have a youtube

channel which until today worked

perfectly called

what the technical defects we had are

yeah and and now is there an echo now

does anyone hear an echo now no there's

no echo there's no effect perfect well

lesson learned right so but but we have

we have a youtube channel called

crowdfunded comics and crowdfunding

comics and what that is is that we want

to to bring worlds together we want to

be like brick like a bridge to the to

the fans and to the creators and then

those that want that are fans that want

to become creators creators that want to

become self publishers that want to see

their own characters out there and their

dreams fulfilled and we're talking to

the top people in comics now who have

had these experiences like yourself

Ethan and getting to know your

Legionnaires has been one of the joys of

my year probably the highlight of my of

my year is to be an accepted and brought

it to your your into the ranks of your

Legionnaires and your family and and I

salute you for that and I'm with my

partner now Scala the Prince of Venice

man and the man in the mainframe and

Ethan I'm going to ask you some

questions we went through you know with

your people and with your show of course

we don't have to to give you any

introduction at all but we last left

Ethan when you were telling me

about about your Legionnaires about the

people your your your your friends you

these these friends you become family

these incredibly loyal many devout

Centurions they're letting you know

they're like we're the Centurions

showing it's Centurions is even better

Centurions how many men today have

Centurions not me you do yeah yeah yes

so can you explain can you can you tell

Nile and I can do it well what do you

let the Centurions know how you feel

about that I love them I've been with

them for a year and a half now that

we've been creating content on this

youtube channel called comic artists Pro

secrets it was created entirely to be

able to get in touch with fans to speak

to people but also to be able to express

myself um you know I'm somebody who

listen I'm a comic book artist but I'm

an artist in a lot of different ways I I

really enjoy um you know making music I

enjoy writing songs I enjoy talking I

enjoy telling stories these are you know

all things that well I mean you know

this this is stuff that I do and you

know I've been a comic book artist for

so long where all i do is draw i really

love the idea of being creative every

single day being forced to be creative

in some entertaining way for a large

audience every single day and that's

what youtube pushes you to do you can

only be a success on youtube if you

create daily content that is fun and

inspiring and engaging for an audience

and your audience will grow if you do

that if you devote yourself to that now

I've learned my my standards about what

to do on YouTube what what it being a

youtuber means from other far more

successful youtubers than myself but I

intend to grow and being a youtuber

honestly has made me happier then you

know any other creative endeavor which

is so strange like you would think well

yeah yeah you won you wanted like awards

and comics you know you work with Geoff

Johns you you created all this stuff

none of that stuff to me

me as happy as having a successful

YouTube channel and engaging with these

fans who follow me around and they they

show up wherever I do a live stream

whenever I do a video they turn out to

watch it and call me names and stuff

that is that is part of the fun of

YouTube getting named on getting to know

people and these people now I mean I

feel like they know me pretty well

because they watch my content so so

devotedly for so long yeah that you just

can't you can't buy that you have to

earn that you have to work for that and

that is uh you know that is who these

people are who are in the chat and I've

got 510 people watching right now Wow

and more will come in as time goes on I

know a lot of people are gonna be

streaming because it's Friday but um so

let me ask you though what's your

favorite meme from all the time you've

been doing this like what's your

favorite meme that's come through this

whole thing I don't look I didn't

realize I had totems that was the first

thing people notice about me I I didn't

like show my face at first I talked to

Richard C Meyer you boys act from

diversity in comics he'd say never chase

oh my god yeah I do I do I know I didn't

know that I didn't realize but he said

never show your face cuz people don't

want to look at men you know if you're a

pretty girl people want to look at you

but people don't want to look at a man's

face on YouTube now I I was like okay

all right that makes sense to me and so

I'd only you know I'd show my hands as I

was pointing to things or drawing things

but you never really saw my face unless

I was doing one-on-one interviews with

you know Mark Waid or somebody and

people immediately started to notice

that I had toe them so they started to

call me ugly even early on and then

uncle Ethan with toe thumbs and then um

and then the pie thing happened then it

was me eating pies it's it doesn't it's

always something new it's always

something fun I mean it's just uh

they're always insulting but it's always

it's all in good fun it's all good fun

it's all good fun I mean Don is all

about I see people who don't get mean

Don and I'm like I don't know if your

channels really gonna work I don't know

if it's taking off to get meme Don is to

be loved about these people and that is

that's what

you want and that and love you they do

and then in the honor of your pine meme

you know is one of my little promos from

our page I you know I'm driving around

between meetings they go and I'm like

number seven McDonald's and pick up a

couple little pies so I'm eating a

couple on the way right yeah perfect and

the one I go to use for the little promo

it was like PI jerky I bit into it and

I'm like trying does thinking like a

[ __ ] I'll just do anyways my god yeah

I'm gonna have pie get good pie like

this is the thing like I always say if

you're gonna do it do it right

you know don't eat garbage if you're

gonna eat garbage if you're gonna have

cupcakes don't eat hostess cupcakes go

to a bakery and get good cupcakes why

waste it why waste the calories on

something that's not very good right

right yeah absolutely and again once

again as a child of the 80s thank you

the cyber frog your IndieGoGo campaign I

mean how much thus far have you raised

we're pushing up on 8080 for the eight

hundred thousand what am I talking I'm

really good I would not be pushing on

eight hundred thousand you have

something like twelve hundred I'm sorry

twelve thousand backers who I think so

yeah and 14th out no fourteen thousand

the fourteen thousand backers and now

that really yeah well yeah is it I mean

is he see the top guy right now Ethan is

hee hee he is the undisputed heavyweight

champion of crowdfunding comics cyber

fraud blood honey is thee without any

shadow of a doubt the most successful

crowdfunded comic of all time so he then

I would say he's earned that title

Oh Hail Caesar really yeah not gonna

[ __ ] out of everybody else and and you

know so and and and that's amazing and

it's amazing it its own but I guess you

like so Ethan going from say

illustrating some of the biggest

mainstream books ever right in the past

10 20 years right you know singing and

and I mean what was it like you know

like again your books were so big that

you see your flash rebirth poster on the

Big Bang Theory no they're too mean but

now you you you walk away from that and

you dive into these unknown and in

completely murky and dangerous waters of

self-publishing so I mean right now it's

all to you you're writing your pencil

and you're inking you're packaging your

shipping you're putting together the

whole shebang you know if you're I don't

know if you're an editor on it but put

that coupled with your YouTube success

right your your your your daily drawing

of a comic because that's a full-time

job to draw a comic book um you know

shooting your videos every day and not

to mention being a family man because

you do have to spend time with your

family um I mean that's got to make one

busy day for Ethan Van Sciver

yeah yeah yeah it's a it's a lot more

but I have to say I I I really like the

way things are working out right now I'm

gonna have to work a lot faster as the

success of cyber frog means that I'm

gonna have to do more cyber fro books

and initially I was just like guys I'm

gonna do one a year and you know I'm

gonna see these just kind of like Harry

Potter novels I'll just do one big book

every year and you know a crowd fund for

them and and they should be good it's

becoming clear now I mean cyber frog has

become people are interested in it in a

lot of in a lot of different ways and

that means there has to be more cyber

fraud content so yeah even though I I

saw myself as kind of a talk radio show

host for the

last year and I really goddamn I enjoy

it I really would much rather be we need

to we need to produce some more cyber

frog stuff cyber frog books on a more

frequent basis which means working even

harder um but I have to say you know my

life isn't that hard my life is pretty

easy I have plenty of time to spend with

my family a lot more so now than I did

when I was working at DC oh yeah yeah

yeah if I want to I can go to the beach

you know I can if I want to I can go to

the theme park and go to Six Flags we

could pick up and just go to Florida

tomorrow sure you know it's it's we have

that kind of freedom and YouTube is is

uh has been very very good for us and we

have the resources to do whatever we

want to do now which is a nice feeling

but yeah I'm gonna have to work work

much much harder at this point to get

these uh to fulfill the demand and to

actually help cyber frog lift off to

where it should be I think it's a kids

show I think it's a video game oh yeah I

totally see that yeah definitely now in

your pit you've picked up back from what

1998 right yeah yeah well I mean cyber

frog cyber frog was a character the lab

we thought was really good-looking I

mean I thought he was a wonderfully

designed character and so did other

people uh you know in 1997 I had a toy

deal with playmates toys

I had an animation deal at mainframe

animation that's where I met Dan DiDio

he was the president over there and he

was doing his opera frog cartoon yeah

yes and Fox Kids was gonna do the TV

show but it just all didn't work out

because playmates toys I don't know the

Japanese contingent of playmates fired

everyone in LA so the whole deal fell

apart but what I knew from that what I

learned from that was that people were

enthusiastic about the way this

character looked I was way too young

experienced of the inexperience of a

storyteller to actually get in there and

tell good cyber frog stories but he

stayed with me for the past 20 years and

you know when opportunities emerged at

one point when Jim

we brought Wildstorm to DC they wanted

to publish cyber frog through Wildstorm

but then while storm folded you know I

was excited I was gonna do cyber frog

blood honey for wild storm right there's

a your article about it on blood honey

um so this opportunity actually um you

know just came about in just the right

way had I done cyber frog blood honey

for wild storm it wouldn't have work it

just wouldn't have worked you know I

needed twenty years of experience and I

needed to do it on my own and that's

where we find ourselves now well don't I

roughed up sorry go ahead

no please no please no you know what I

loved about cyber frog growing up you

know I'm not a Boomer guys is

Battletoads like I was in the

Battletoads and that actually what

caught my eye when I was in where I grew

up card castle was the store and that's

where I first saw battle toes and I was

like what is this you know my mom buy it

but um yeah I mean I I'm actually really

pumped this is all coming back and it's

not Battletoads it's no it's not it's

not Battletoads at all that's a what I

loved about it is it just brought

everything together for me when I was a

little kid and what I'm saying is I

still appreciate it today and I look

forward to the new book that's going to

be coming out cool yeah thanks well so

II think so we've got to this to this

stage in your life now and and and this

is for your viewers as well because you

oh you're always talking and now I'm

gonna interview you let's let's let's

get an insight on who is EBS and what's

your typical day like what's a day in

the life of Ethan Van Sciver I feel like

everybody already knows I feel like um

you know there's nothing wrong with

Battletoads it was the early 90s I was

playing for at night with his friends

and then what he'd play tell me 145

people can hear him screaming 45 people

can hear you screaming yeah you know

what I think I found the echo

[Laughter]

just turn the noise canceling thing well

that was me though everybody else was

that going to when I just turned the

noise canceling thing off on my headset

can you guys hear me yeah great I could

get daddy's belt

I like that comment yeah get daddy's

belt at Betty's I need daddy's belt so

you got a great group of fans man I just

got a point out I mean granted the

talking [ __ ] about battletoads and i

could really care less nowadays but I

mean you do man

you have an awesome group of fans with

some of the craziest freakin content

that they're posting and your chances I

love it that's what I love watching your

videos yeah they're they're awesome I I

um you know look this is I think I feel

like people already know what my day is

like because I share so much of my life

with them you know even when sometimes

when Andrea and I rarely we get out of

the house we'll get to go on a date

somewhere you know I'll check in really

hey where the concert we're in Atlantic

City all right you know it's like that

kind of a thing and and you know it's I

want once once people become a part of

your YouTube channel and become a

devoted audience I don't want to exclude

them from things you want to include

them in things and let them know more

about you and and sure we have our

boundaries you know I mean there there's

some private things of you know that we

obviously you know keep from them but

for the most part as much as you can let

somebody in let your audience into who

you are

make them invest it in in your life I

look at people like h3h3 you know I mean

you know Richard C Myers another one I

really admire him as a youtuber because

people know so much about him from

watching his videos they feel like they

know him and I want people to feel that

way about me too so I you know the

answer is I wake up whenever I wake up I

come downstairs I make videos I draw

until I fall asleep i nap a lot I try to

spend as much time as I can with my

three-year-old daughter who I waited 15

years for I wanted that little girl

forever long thank you

finally you know married Andrea and had

my had my daughter and you know that's

those are the things that are important

to me it's it's important to

to share all that with people so that

they know and they make they can relate

to it I get so much fan mail so much fan

mail from people emails private messages

from people telling me very intensely

personal things and it becomes people

people really do feel like they know you

and I know guys you guys are doing that

so well like there's a you know a bunch

of you guys out there just doing this

whole thing with you know crowdfunding

your books making your fans a part of

like this whole other experience in an

hour an hour last year I was talking

about this a little bit I mean it's

something that I think is really special

and unique and you've been able to

encompass this book your your YouTube

everything you're doing but you're

making it so that your fans are a part

of it so it becomes personal you know

and in a good personal way and it's like

hey you know this is this is my friend

I'm watching him and you know they have

your back you you have their back by

giving them great content by letting

their voices speak and I think that's

kind of looks like the new wave I think

that's like the new trend I don't want

to say trend I think that's just you're

leaving a good generation let's say the

a new generation of how to do comics

like you know it's not just about going

to a store buying a book and be like oh

yeah thank you do you see and marvel

thank you thank you thank you for the

same stuff you're like hey here's a book

I'm doing and join me on the journey and

you're just creating this journey for

everyone to walk on with you and I mean

I love it so many like so many of you

guys right now they're so success

successful with the crowdfunding all

kind of are doing this but you're all

doing it on your own so it's not like

someone saying hey do this do this do

this you guys are just getting it and

it's so fun to watch we're just figuring

things out as we go again we all have

each others example to learn from I mean

Billy is doing this you know Billy is is

learning how to do it I don't think his

Kickstarter went as well as it could

have and so he's over here on IndieGoGo

he's still made a few mistakes he'll get

it on she I mean I'm gonna we're gonna

watch Billy like a hawk and make sure

that his campaign is yeah you know the

right number of tears so that he can

maximize his profitability and make his

whole campaign easiest for his fans

easiest for him and his wife and that's

you know that's that's what we're

learning

how to do we're making we're making

mistakes I initially i remember when i

when i launched cyber fraud i was like

y'all get it out in november it was June

when I launched my I'll get it out in

November I said ridiculous like that's

that's me in doing melts working my ass

off for DC Comics and doing a sloppy

project that's November and in the

meantime Mitch Mitch was just bright

Weiser was just like yeah my books gonna

come out in April and he launched it

basically the same time as me and I said

slacker what do you mean your books

gonna come out in April like isn't that

a too long he's like Ethan you don't

it's gonna take that long and I had

doubts when he said that I was like

maybe he's right uh yeah and here we are

April's coming up and I'm going to print

at the end of April people aren't going

to have their books until the end of

July first so for these projects you

have to time things right you have to

make sure that when you give an

estimated time of delivery that it be

generous be slack with that time because

that time is gonna go by quickly

especially with a passion project like

this now I see other people do crowd

funds with comics that at the end of the

day some of these comics that people are

putting out not comics gate projects but

other projects are garbage I mean I just

don't think they're very good I think

people read them and kind of go yeah

that's it with that I'm glad I've acted

I guess that's not what I wanted to do

with cyber front blood honey this has to

be the best book of my career this is

going to launch a whole new series of

books about this character create a

world world building but make you fall

in love with these characters make it my

best art that I've ever produced and

really pour my heart into it you know

Jeff John said to me he's like I don't

know why you're working so fast a DC

right now and I said I'm trying to be a

monthly guy he said I'm sorry I'm trying

to pay the bills he's like he's like

that's not he's like Ethan that was

never you that's not who you are and I

think it's a mistake and I said well I

you know listen I'm trying to make

myself useful he said you're the kind of

guy who needs to take his time

everything that we did together was me

pouring energy and time blood sweat and

tears into an obsessing over every panel

and making it great and these books that

I did with Jeff job

our classics because of it so so much of

what we're doing now what I'm doing now

is me just kind of throwing off those

old DC shackles and saying I'm here to

produce classics that are gonna stand

the test of time

not disposable comics just for the sake

of doing a comic either this either this

book is going to be the best thing I've

ever done or I don't want to do it I'd

much rather just you talk radio I'd much

rather just talk on YouTube all day long

I make the same amount of money yeah you

know that get into this for the right

reasons this is an opportunity to really

earn a large budget to do a comic book

that's gonna stand the test of time I

want this thing to be good I'm shooting

for the pyramids I want this thing to

last I want I want this thing to be the

Sphinx I'm here after humanity's gone

after this civilization is gone cyber

frog will still be here that's like I

think like that I think crazy thoughts

like that like you have to shoot for the

moon and fail and get to the stars you

know hey well they're saying yes the new

Stan Lee so maybe that's uh yeah path

for you brother well well speaking of

that what they're saying Ethan and now

we're on your show and you're getting a

lot of super chats and do you I think

you should start answering them you know

just now like the Nile okay Billy Billy

and Nile have a channel called

crowdfunding comics they're gonna really

be discussing crowdfunding comics with

people who who cried fun comics now I

mean that is you know what people have

been doing it for a little while now

with varying degrees of success but this

is the future of the comic book industry

that's my opinion I really think that

crowdfunding comics is the future and

these guys once they figure out you know

iron out a few bugs learning how to

broadcast which everybody has to do they

are going to be on

edge getting different ideas from

different people who are doing this and

teaching you teaching you how to do this

if you're somebody who wants to

crowdfund your own comic book like I

have and like comic skaters have these

guys are gonna have tips for you and

they're gonna teach you how to do it

yeah that is the goal my friend and that

not only give you tips and stuff to

build such a great community that once

you post your stuff

you'll start instantly getting funding

like you and your great group of fans

and everything you know it's just

another method of just supporting all

those guys out there that are doing

things a little differently yeah you

know this is the thing guys the direct

markets not gonna last it can't it just

can't last because we're changing

society is changing and we're you know

that the growing print the growing pains

are evident all around us the people are

buying comics in different ways and

people are used to having things brought

to them now they're used to I mean today

I love this Irish Spring for men's soap

this special Irish Spring soap it's

awesome you can't find it in stores I

found it once in a CVS and I bought it

brought it home and it was just awesome

can't find it any more so I go on

amazon.com and now I'm like actually

buying soap from Amazon and having it

delivered do you have the button yeah

that's the way people are now and and

it's gonna give we're gonna become more

and more like that where people are

going to devote more time to the things

that they want to do and less time to

actually going places to shop and that

sucks for retailers but it just means

that everybody's gonna have to learn and

adapt for us we're at a pretty easy spot

where you know we're going to have to

learn how to identify our market speak

to our market and crowdfund from them to

get their support and then send directly

to them people should be able to buy

cyber frog just by pushing a button and

that is that is the ultimate goal that

is the ultimate goal yep yeah I still

want to create a product this is the

other thing people think digital is the

future and I don't think it is not in

common

not in comics he got the same but it is

an on-demand world that's what we're

turning into and thank you cable

companies for creating on-demand because

everything now in Amazon is on-demand

you want it boom I know here in

Connecticut half the stuff order now is

same-day delivery so there you know it's

just a whole different mantra yeah and

well the thing what's cool about that is

that you're giving the people what they

want unlike say the big two they're

giving the people what they want what

editors may want and and and this if you

don't give the people what you want

you're not DC you're not Marvel you know

Ethan Van Sciver is not Marvel Comics

Ethan Van Sciver is not too big to fail

so you know um you know as we talked

about the other night

Ethan I think that big to unfortunately

now that they're owned by you know

Disney and Warner's these giant

corporations the comics are a tax

write-off for that so they don't care it

would go so that there's no

accountability

there's not one iota of accountability

story wise or art wise if the books fail

they fail they keep restarting them it's

almost like they keep regurgitating the

same failed creative teams - now there

are a lot of great creative teams out

there but there's also some of these

others I may be hired for for how the

tourists they may be on the internet or

what they might have done outside of

comics but they're not qualified to like

to write comments and a lot of them

don't even like comics and they

specifically go in saying that they want

to change this they don't like it and

they go to do their their own thing and

it's it's a complete recipe for failure

and it's failed time and time again and

that's why they keep rebooting these

books and cramming them down these poor

retailer's throats forcing the retails

to buy 500 copies of a book because the

retails are so desperate that they do

want to get that gimli variant cover or

something oh yeah I mean or or the top

guys very sketch covers some and these

retails can't move these books no it's a

shame that's what's hurting these these

retailers is what's being shoved down

their throat yeah and you know

unfortunately it's like you know the sad

group that may be pushing it you know

has a big voice but doesn't have a pot

to piss in and so everyone's afraid of

the voice so it's like all right let's

just keep bringing people in to do this

this and this and all's now it is it's

just a

Sheen it's a it's an unemotional under

cash machine that's saying you know

distribute distribute distribute create

great create doesn't work okay you were

gonna create this you're gonna create

that no one's actually like hey let's

stop for a second and let's say hey

remember when everything was about

talent you know remember what it was

about how someone looked for this and

that was like hey you're actually a

[ __ ] really good artist you're a

great writer you know you should come

together in boom you have great stories

and stuff in the unfortunately but not

unfortunately the indie world and the

tools at hand right now are gonna allow

that to all happen again right and even

do you remember how hard it was for us

to break in I couldn't get away I

couldn't get work from anybody they told

me that my style was to fashion II or my

might you know wasn't a DC face this

wasn't the Marvel way of drawing

something if I could draw like Jim lead

I do a fill an issue or a part of an

annual or something and I didn't want to

draw like Jim Lee and I couldn't draw

like Jim Lee I mean there was a high bar

of what you needed to do to get in and

now it seems a complete opposite it's

yeah there are no standards any more

ability yeah you know being able to be

in a comic book to work in comics

required a level of skill and dedication

talent and also marketability your style

had to be something that people thought

well yeah I think people are gonna buy

that book because of the art and that's

all gone now yeah you know those

standards have fallen I mean pretty much

anybody is hired to draw comic book

right now if they'll work for a low wage

right that it's the death knell you've

got you've got people who are being

underpaid to draw comics they don't care

about for a price that's just five not

five dollars for a cover price for a

comic that nobody cares about with eight

varying covers on it this is just that

it's the end so you know look I you know

I know that you guys aren't really a

part of this necessarily but like I'm

part of comics gate you know this is a

movement that rebels so it's a

market-based uprising against exactly

what we're talking about right now but

they crime is a wonderful group it

really is fun you know it's it's like

even beyond that my friend like it's

just like it's just people opening their

eyes and seeing like it's not even just

comics it's just the world right now

like why can't we just get back to

adventure why can't we get

- fun why can't we get back to just cool

stories and like letting our

imaginations go somewhere for a while I

thought what yeah as opposed to just

like like right now everything in the

media everything in the world is just

it's encompassed on everything we love

and music and television animation is so

like how can I call it it's streamed in

a way that you know almost everything's

kind of like the same it's like we

forgot like how to be individuals and to

have you know creative freedom to do

things you're just restricted so much by

everything that's going on in the world

that's like everyone's afraid to just be

themselves and to create things that

people loved I mean everything seems to

be so diverse now it seems pretty

vanilla with things yes you're getting

it you know it's like everyone's so

afraid to say something or do something

because of what someone else is gonna do

instead of just being like screw it

let's just do it and then people love it

you know it's just everything's becoming

very vanilla

well what price you get your balls back

right EVs that's what I said what is it

worth what does it worth to be

especially if you're a creative person

yeah if you're a creative person you

can't be feeling too good I I sense a

lot of fear in comics right now I sense

a lot of people afraid of saying the

wrong thing drawing the wrong thing

might kind of send the wrong signal to

the wrong group of progressives and

that come along with not following in

line with everyone else and everyone's

afraid everyone's afraid except for me

love more creative people to just say

you know what I want to be I don't want

to be afraid anymore I want to tell a

story about this I want to do this comic

book I'm gonna make my own money I don't

want have to answer to weirdos with blue

hair I don't want to answer to those

people anymore yeah I don't want to be

afraid of them I don't want to be a part

of their community because their

community is toxic poisonous and

suppressive repressive I want to do my

own thing and I want to do it right now

and that is comics gate that's what

we're doing here I always invite

if you're a female it's getting your

people are very impatient they want the

success right away about you if you've

got the patience you're gonna work hard

you got the tools in front of you you

can do whatever you want and you can

bring out your own product and you will

you know if it's good you'll get your

own fanbase if it's not good then

no you won't but I mean everything's

there and that's what we're trying to

help expose to the world yeah you can't

really sell your own comic until you've

sold yourself to your fan base you do

have to find their market and I've you

know I've done it this way you know of

course people still people know me

mostly from my work at DC but I have to

say most of my audience right now at

this point they're not aware of my work

at DC I've got a whole crowd of fans who

know me from my Star Wars commentary

like oh you're a really good artist it's

like gonna cool right you know it's like

you didn't know I'm really good at

talking about Star Wars and I'm really

good at drawing comics um buy my comic

and they're like hell yeah I'd love to

that kind of fanservice is what is going

to win you um a devoted and loyal

audience it's vital it doesn't come easy

it doesn't come quickly you do have to

put time and energy into it you have to

vote so how do you do that though like

how do you go about like all right I

haven't published my first book yet I

need to get an audience space or do you

target how do you target that then how

does how do you make that happen do you

have any suggestions or on how to grow a

YouTube channel well no just like you

were talking about like you know to sell

your comic book to grow whatever you

know you need to know your fan base so

hope you have them in a fan base you

have to they're gonna make themselves

known to you do you do anything are you

interested in anything other than comics

or or even comics but I always find the

comics right now if you're gonna do a

channel they're only talks about comics

in the year 2019 you're gonna have a

limited reach yeah there has to be some

other element to it there has to be a

you know some some purpose some thrust

behind what you're saying about comics

if it's political its political you know

I mean like I said diversity in comics

about sjw's ruining comics which is

which is far more interesting to listen

to than just somebody doing a bland

helps but I would I would just ask

myself what else I'm interested in

book market is is small right now the

colonists industry is small and it's

dominated by gatekeepers who I don't

know who seem to be their taste makers

without taste find something else that

you're interested in make good

entertaining content every day even if

it's just about the news your point of

view about the world and life that

whatever it is that you're talking about

produce entertaining content every

single day on YouTube or you can be like

Elliott Fernandes is he's on Instagram

he's got a hundred and fifty thousand

followers on Instagram he shows his

artwork there here's a guy who's gonna

be able to crowdfund a very healthy some

because he's already got his audience

build up but social media and

interaction with with the market with

your with your audience is it's vital

it's vital it's it one yeah and it

doesn't matter I mean you know you can

have somebody who's an established comic

book artist you can have somebody like

Dave Johnson for example amount and

launched his own crowdfunded comic book

and it's just not gonna do very well and

he's gonna say well what the hell

know who I am in the comic book industry

what the Laughing Man is now since then

I've had it redrawn a bunch of different

times so that I can own it it's it's not

the Wendy's logo essentially if for a

long time just a picture of that panel

other artists redo it redo it make it

change it a little bit and make it so

what's your writing process do you do

the Marvel style never like like like

Stanwyck of an idea that Jack would take

it back and Jack would be drawing in the

office doing two pages a day and then

Stan was scripted after it's done or do

you work from full scripts no I don't

work from full scripts um I have the

story in my head I have a kind of a

rough plot of how I want to go at the

beginning and I break it down into

scenes and I draw the scene and then I

script it when it's already drawn but

the thing about cyber frog is there are

so many instances where I just go I I

make a realization along the way I'm

making a movie you know I'm making a

move yeah I don't want to confine myself

to a set of ideas that I had all at one

time I want to allow myself the

inspiration to make additions and

changes over the course of the project I

don't know if that the Marvel style it's

closer to Marvel style than it is DC

style but

this epic the blood honey storyline

that's this this particular issue is is

this 48 pages this particular episode

one is this one's closer to eighty eight

pages om and and the one who told me

where we go back in time to 1998 is that

okay yeah it's not back in time we don't

go back and I'm in this story the the

story starts out this one book needs to

encapsulate everything because people

people are like do I have to read the

old Harris books no you don't you don't

have to read them so the you know the

book is kind of broken down into three

sections the first section it takes

place in 1996 and it is the origin of

cyber frog it's the purpose of cyber

frog on silent mandroid as told by Chell

sin and then that's 21 pages and then we

cut to part two and that is 1998 it's

the invasion event and how it all

happened how the extinction event

happened and that's 20-something pages

and then after that is cyber frog wakes

up in current year 2018 it's always

gonna it's gonna be like lost it'll

always be 2018 and that that just goes

on so that's and that's where we go on

from there so it really needs to be I

need everything to be self-contained

this book needs to be the only book that

anybody needs to read to get into the

story and then the the last chapter that

takes place in 2018 has a cliffhanger so

it will pick up with the next book

that's called wrecked planet and I think

correct planted I'm gonna break into two

parts and this is the conversation that

I'm having with my publisher who's just

saying I know that wrecked planet should

be 80 pages but can you do can you break

it in half so that you can put 40 pages

out and then 40 pages out like two

different books and I said as long as I

get to tell my entire story that I want

to tell I don't mind doing it that way

and I think that's that's that that is

exactly the right

of action for you if I made from from an

outsider looking in because I'm doing

that exactly what she returned of the

warrior we're doing art one in May when

we launched our Kickstarter at the end

of May and then in the fall we go back

to part two so and so it's an 80 page

story but it'll be broken down into two

parts part 1 and part 2 and I think if

people do want they want to see more

cyber frog and they and and they don't

mind 40 pages every couple of months as

opposed to 80 page isn't having to wait

for them yeah yeah yeah yeah I mean

ultimately my you know that that convert

that argument made sense to me because

ultimately what am I trying to do I'm

trying to make a big thick book that's

gonna combine everything so what do I

care if the next chapter is broken into

two parts and people can get a little

bit of it sooner or if you know I just

make them wait I'd rather they get you

know they get the forty pages and then

another forty pages and get both of them

this year then make them wait yeah and

you will get to that you will get your

big book you will get and it's probably

going to take the same amount of time

that put out to smaller issues than you

for to do one big issue so they take the

same amount of time so it's it makes

perfect sense but the next thing that

we're doing is rainbow Brut right yeah

yeah well the next the planet as soon as

cyber frog is finished in April it's

going off to print I am launching a

crowdfunding that's gonna be for one I

think it's gonna last for one week or so

no not one week one month that's gonna

be a big piece of cyber frog merchandise

that people can buy and then from there

it's gonna be rainbow birth the comic

book I'm rainbow Brut is of course it's

well look we're gender swapping all of

the girls franchises from the 1980s now

I'm all for gender swapping I know that

they're doing it you know with

ghostbusters they're doing it in a lot

of ways with Ocean's eleven and all

these other things turning men into

women that's fine

I want to turn women into men I'm gonna

take these girls properties I want to

make them for men I want to do male

versions of them or aim them at men and

just see you know this actually will

work this is going to work men

by this [ __ ] they're not going to

they're gonna be into well yeah whereas

you know when you do the reverse and you

turn Ghostbusters and the women people

stay away in droves yeah yeah well you

know it's funny is that I gender swapped

first of all I care of course hours my

favorite director of all time so I loved

all of his samurai films Toshiro Mifune

Fashion Institute of Technology for art

and we had an art history class and we

learned about Japanese woodblock prints

and he thoroughly changed my life

looking at woodblock prints I teaching

myself to stay away from from putting

some from spotting blacks you know how

dramatic blacks are chiaroscuro black

and white in the art and stuff like that

lighting I wanted to tell my stories

like the Japanese woodblock artists did

by there's no blacks in Japanese

woodblock print art I mean the hair is

dramatic lighting and you have to tell

your story like a kabuki drama and if

you know kabuki making with the white

makeup and the lighting is just

incredibly bright and all and it

literally changed my life and I gotta

broke up with me in 1993 when we went to

Epcot Center and all I want to do is

spend time in Japan we kept going back

to Japan because I am so engrossed it's
