How to Learn English FASTER (without studying more)

Imagine you could learn English faster

0:03

without studying more. Wouldn't that be

0:05

great? Well, I have good news because

0:08

this is entirely possible.

0:10

It's entirely possible to improve your

0:12

skills in a language without studying

0:15

more and without putting in more effort.

0:18

And this is what I'm going to teach you

0:20

in today's video. My name is Michael.

0:22

I'm the founder of English at the ready

0:24

and it's my goal to make you fluent in

0:27

English. In English we have a saying and

0:30

you might have heard this before, work

0:32

smarter not harder. This essentially

0:35

translates to it's better to work

0:39

intelligently and efficiently than it is

0:42

to spend hours and hours working but not

0:45

getting great results. And this is so

0:48

true because it's entirely possible to

0:51

waste your time. I see so many students

0:54

spending days, weeks, and months

0:57

studying English the wrong way. They're

1:00

working harder, they're putting in the

1:02

time, but they're not working very

1:04

efficiently. They're not doing the right

1:06

thing. We have a limited number of hours

1:09

in the day and learning English probably

1:11

isn't the only thing you're doing. You

1:13

have to go to school, you have to go to

1:15

work, you have to attend to your family,

1:18

to your kids. You have social

1:20

engagements with your friends. You have

1:22

a life and spending hours every day

1:25

learning English can be challenging and

1:28

in many cases not possible. So I would

1:30

much you spend less time and get better

1:35

results than spend more time and get

1:38

worse results. It sounds so obvious, but

1:42

so many students don't do this. You see,

1:45

if you want to improve your English, you

1:47

need to identify your weaknesses. I mean

1:50

this, sit down and think about what you

1:54

really need to improve cuz you don't

1:55

need to improve your English. You need

1:57

to improve certain skills. That might be

2:00

grammar, that might be your vocabulary,

2:02

that might be your pronunciation, your

2:04

accent, whatever it may be, it's not the

2:07

whole language, it's just specific

2:09

skills. For example, some students are

2:12

amazing at grammar. Maybe they spent

2:15

years studying grammar in school. If

2:17

that's the case, if that's you, you

2:19

probably don't need to spend too much

2:21

time studying grammar. Some students

2:23

find it easy to pronounce words. Some

2:26

students find it easy to understand

2:28

native speakers. Everybody has their own

2:30

strengths, but they also have their own

2:32

weaknesses. And it's a waste of time to

2:34

focus on your strengths. You need to

2:36

focus on your weaknesses. So, if you're

2:39

good at grammar, you might be bad at

2:41

speaking. That means you don't need to

2:43

study English, you need to practice the

2:46

skill of speaking. So, all your time

2:49

should be dedicated to speaking, not to

2:52

grammar. Or if you're really good at

2:54

pronunciation, but your writing isn't

2:57

very good, then don't work on

2:59

pronunciation. Don't watch videos on

3:01

YouTube on pronunciation. Read books,

3:04

expand your vocabulary, and practice

3:06

writing. Do you see what I'm saying? I

3:08

want to give you an example of a student

3:10

who I worked with a couple years ago.

3:12

Her name is Shadab, and Shadab came to

3:15

Canada and was finding it really

3:17

difficult to integrate and to speak

3:21

English with people because she felt

3:23

nervous. She didn't feel confident to

3:25

speak. She was good at grammar cuz she

3:27

had learned grammar back home in school,

3:30

but her speaking skills needed a lot of

3:33

improvement. And the advice I gave her

3:35

in our programs was to forget about

3:38

grammar. Don't worry about grammar.

3:40

Instead, dedicate all your time to

3:42

speaking. Go out, try to speak with

3:45

strangers, make an effort to get out of

3:48

your comfort zone and to practice

3:49

speaking English, and eventually you

3:52

will improve. I told her not to worry

3:54

about grammar cuz she was already really

3:56

good at grammar, and I told her to focus

3:58

specifically on her speaking skills.

4:00

Sure enough, after a few months Shadab

4:02

improved significantly, and she felt a

4:05

lot more confident to speak simply

4:08

because she focused on the right thing.

4:11

So, what does this mean for you? Figure

4:13

out what you're bad at, and work on

4:15

that. Don't work on what you're good at,

4:18

work on what you're bad at. Now, the

4:20

second thing you need to know is that

4:23

yes, there are so many ways to improve

4:25

your English. You can watch videos, you

4:28

can take classes, you can read, you can

4:30

listen to podcasts, music, whatever, and

4:33

some are better than others, but to be

4:36

honest, this is a very personal thing.

4:38

You might hate listening to podcasts,

4:42

and you might love reading, whereas

4:44

somebody else might love podcasts and

4:47

hate reading. There's not one right or

4:49

wrong way of learning a language because

4:52

everybody is different. Everybody has a

4:54

different learning style. So, normally

4:57

it doesn't matter what you do, but it

5:00

should be something you enjoy. This is

5:03

so important. You have to make learning

5:05

English fun. You have to make it

5:07

something you enjoy because if you

5:09

don't, you will get bored. I promise

5:11

you, you will get bored, and you will

5:14

give up. If you don't enjoy doing

5:16

something, it's going to be very, very

5:18

difficult to stay disciplined. I'll give

5:21

you the example of myself when I learned

5:25

German and French. A few years ago, when

5:28

I was studying these languages, I was

5:29

really interested in reading. I loved to

5:33

read, but I didn't really enjoy

5:35

listening to podcasts or watching

5:37

movies. So, I spent all my time reading,

5:40

which helped me because I stayed

5:42

motivated, and I didn't get bored. Now,

5:44

reading might not be something you enjoy

5:46

doing, and if that's the case, don't do

5:48

it, but figure out what you actually

5:50

enjoy and stick to that. Because if you

5:53

enjoy it, you're going to stick with it

5:54

longer, and it's actually going to be

5:56

fun, so you won't give up. Remember, do

6:00

something you actually need, so work on

6:03

your weaknesses and not your strengths,

6:05

and do something you actually enjoy. If

6:07

you stick to these two principles,

6:10

learning English is going to be so much

6:12

easier, it's going to be so much faster,

6:15

and it's going to be a lot more fun. You

6:18

don't need more hours in the day, you

6:20

don't need more time in your schedule,

6:23

you simply need a better strategy. A

6:26

strategy that actually works and that

6:28

makes learning fun. Let me know in the

6:30

comments, what is your favorite way to

6:33

learn English? Do you like movies? Do

6:35

you like podcasts? Do you like reading?
