Good evening, bonis. Thank you all for

0:05

being here. My name is Peter Casserella,

0:08

the executive director of Fonvite.

0:10

Fonvite, for those of you who haven't

0:12

heard, is a relatively new initiative at

0:15

Duke University that supports the

0:17

Catholic intellectual traditions across

0:20

the university and across the

0:21

disciplines. and we're really delighted

0:23

you're here this evening for this very

0:25

very special event and to hear our

0:28

distinguished lecture. I just want to

0:31

say u one or two things before

0:34

introducing the person who will

0:35

introduce our speaker tonight. Uh the

0:38

first is that there is a bit of an

0:40

interconnection between Fonvite and our

0:42

speaker tonight. Namely, one of his

0:45

students, the late Thomas Levergood, who

0:47

sadly passed at a young age in 2021, was

0:51

also the person who gave a kind of

0:53

blessing and inspiration to Reinhardt

0:55

Hooter and I when we wrote the vision

0:57

statement for for Fonvite. And so, uh,

1:01

Professor Marian was not only a teacher

1:02

of Thomas, but was his faculty adviser

1:05

at the Lumen Christi Institute. And

1:07

that's a kind of personal and

1:08

intellectual connection that binds us

1:10

here today. But my main job here tonight

1:13

is to introduce my colleague, Professor

1:15

Kevin Hart, distinguished poet and

1:18

theologian. Professor Hart in is holds

1:21

the Joe Ray Wright University

1:23

Distinguished Professorship in the

1:25

Divinity School with an appointment in

1:27

English and I'll let him introduce our

1:29

speaker. So without further ado,

1:30

Professor Kevin Hart.

1:37

Uh thank you Peter. Well, it's a great

1:41

pleasure and an honor for us to have

1:44

Jeanluke Marion here in the Divinity

1:47

School as the guest of

1:50

Fonuiti. For many years now, Marian's

1:53

work has been seinal in the study of

1:56

Christianity. If one generation of

1:59

theologians was challenged by reading

2:01

God without

2:02

being, another one was equally

2:05

challenged by the provocative thesis of

2:08

being given. And then today, younger

2:11

theologians at Duke and elsewhere are

2:14

coming to terms with what might well be

2:17

his

2:18

magnumopus. Revelation comes from

2:20

elsewhere.

2:23

Wherever students of divinity have

2:25

looked these past few decades, we have

2:28

had Marion squarely before

2:31

us. Those interested in theology and the

2:35

arts are enriched by his thoughts on the

2:38

icon and on the bedazzlement we

2:41

experience in the visual

2:43

arts. Those concerned with scripture

2:46

return to his understanding of the

2:48

prodical son parable. Those who meditate

2:52

on doctrine are nourished by his

2:54

thoughts on the resurrection of

2:57

Jesus. Scholars of the early church find

2:59

that he's written illuminatingly on St.

3:03

Augustine while scholars of medieval

3:05

Christianity will read him on St. Thomas

3:09

Aquinas and so the list goes

3:12

on. His contribution to modern theology

3:16

as well as to modern philosophy has been

3:19

immense.

3:20

and he remains as vivid and inventive a

3:23

thinker as he's always

3:25

been. His current work is on the Song of

3:28

Songs and many students of wisdom

3:31

literature will be eagerly awaiting the

3:34

book's

3:36

appearance. We're thankful to Jeanluke

3:39

and Kin Marion for making time in their

3:43

busy schedule in Boston to visit us in

3:46

Divinity at Duke. We wish them a happy

3:49

time among us and we anticipate with

3:52

great relish this evening's lecture

3:55

revelation as question. Please join me

3:58

in welcoming Jeanluke Marion.

4:10

I would like us to thank you Peter

4:13

Garola and my old

4:17

friend Kevin Art uh for this

4:21

invitation. Uh it is true that

4:25

uh after many years in uh the United

4:30

States, I

4:32

find myself really to some extent at

4:36

home in the uh Duke Divinity

4:40

School.

4:43

Um

4:47

well revelation as a question.

4:54

uh as I

4:57

was uh working on the issue of the

5:06

manifestation manifestation of the

5:08

phenomena as a phenomenologist

5:10

manifestation of God as

5:13

a a Christian believer. uh indeed uh I

5:18

had to

5:20

uh to address the question of

5:25

revelation. So I

5:28

did and to my great surprise I

5:32

discovered two

5:34

things one negative the other positive.

5:38

The negative one is that in fact

5:40

revelation is not a steady

5:44

uh concept in the history and in the

5:51

landscape of Christian

5:55

theology. This discoveries

5:58

was really surprising for me. uh you may

6:02

check the great uh studies in the

6:07

history of the theorical concepts and

6:10

the best scholars all agree all of them

6:14

there is no single

6:18

word which as such in Hebrew ancient

6:22

Greek and even in Latin could be

6:26

translated as revelation that is our

6:30

concept of Revelation is quite recent. I

6:34

mean uh

6:37

uh revelation became

6:41

a

6:43

central theme in this story of

6:46

Christianity roughly with Thomas

6:49

Aquinas. So it is a a long story. I have

6:53

no no time to explain everything but

6:55

Thomas Aquinas

6:57

uh in the

6:59

first article or the first question or

7:02

the first part of

7:04

the

7:07

sum asks the question is

7:12

it should

7:15

we expect from another science than

7:20

philosophy the knowledge of

7:23

So this question

7:27

uh impose itself to Thomas enough

7:31

because indeed the answer according to

7:35

Aristotle for instance would have been

7:37

no philosophy that's enough to reach a

7:42

knowledge of the

7:44

divine for a Christian theologian indeed

7:47

this cannot be admitted and answered

7:51

with to care

7:53

and sub to arguments that in fact there

7:57

is what he called used to call the

7:59

doctrina the sacra doctrina that is a

8:03

biblical text and the teaching of that

8:06

biblical text in the expression of the

8:08

church the sacractrina is another

8:11

science which should rule philosophy

8:15

itself in the case of the knowledge of

8:17

god so far so good we are have Not I'm

8:22

not I have no intention to explain the

8:25

detail of that doctrine but we see that

8:29

in that case and and so he he made a

8:35

double

8:38

uh

8:38

he he construct a double theology that

8:42

is the theology of

8:46

philosophy and the theology of

8:49

psychocrina And what we call now

8:53

revelation is a theology of sacred

8:55

doctrina by opposition to the

8:59

philosophical theology. And we we have

9:02

kept this divide. In fact, for for a

9:06

large

9:10

part, this uh

9:16

solution had

9:19

great advantage in assets, but it had a

9:27

um an Eden failure. That is to admit

9:33

that the sacra doctrina now called

9:36

revelation revelation

9:39

uh what was the complement so to speak

9:45

and the achievement of the philosophical

9:47

understanding of god according to to to

9:50

natural reason.

9:53

This implied

9:56

that the sacra doctrina was and should

10:00

be a

10:02

science as the uh philosophical

10:07

knowledge of

10:08

God which was indeed philosophical

10:12

science. And uh

10:17

the by

10:20

upgrading the sacred doctrina the

10:23

revelio to the function of an upper

10:27

science the queen of

10:31

sciences.

10:33

Indeed it could appear as a very strong

10:36

position

10:38

for theology as revelation. But it is

10:42

also a very weak position because

10:47

it's downsize revelation to the level of

10:52

a

10:54

science and indeed there is a lot to

10:58

learn in the biblical revelation. But is

11:02

it the best way to

11:07

admit the biblical revelation if we keep

11:10

the name as to to to say that it is a

11:14

science? To some extent it is less than

11:17

a science because in a science you can

11:19

demonstrate what you say. you're

11:22

supposed but it is much more because you

11:26

are not supposed to convert to a science

11:29

or to the result and the inunocations

11:33

produced by a

11:34

science. So the concept

11:36

of revelation starting with Thomas Aquas

11:42

as the one of the two terms of natural

11:47

knowledge philosophical knowledge of the

11:49

divine and

11:52

Biblical Sakra doctrina as the

11:57

revelation. Perhaps this dissension is

12:01

not that steady. This was my negative

12:06

discovery. The positive

12:09

discovery

12:11

was could be explained this

12:16

way. As a

12:18

phenomenologist and all the

12:19

phenomenologists will agree about

12:23

that the the the starting

12:27

point and this this makes the difference

12:29

between phenomenology and

12:33

usual

12:36

metaphysics. In

12:41

phenomenology, we try before deciding

12:45

whether

12:47

uh what we know is

12:50

uh

12:52

objective is an objective knowledge,

12:54

whether it is true, whether it is half

12:57

true or completely deceiving and all all

13:00

those question. We try to describe what

13:05

appears. Whatever may appear, it has

13:09

first to be

13:11

described. That is uh we have to

13:15

describe

13:17

indeed clear and

13:20

uh uh distinct ideas. But we can

13:25

describe as well and lit literature does

13:28

that uh our dreams, our imaginations,

13:32

our hopes and we can describe everything

13:36

which appear

13:38

uh no matter whether this thing is an

13:41

object, this thing is perfectly known

13:44

and so on and so

13:48

the the experience has to be taken

13:52

seriously.

13:54

whatever his origin and his clarity may

13:59

uh

14:01

be. This is a

14:03

principle developed by two greatest and

14:08

first

14:10

phenomenologist in being in time section

14:14

seven when he says

14:16

that a phenomenon is what

14:21

appears by

14:24

itself by itself and and as himself and

14:31

himself.

14:32

And so a phenomenology is only and it is

14:36

not easy to let what appears by itself

14:39

appear by itself. This is not

14:43

something banal to say that because to

14:47

say that what appears appears by itself.

14:51

It is a

14:55

proposition

14:57

criticizing face tof face K because in K

15:00

as you know what appears the phenomenon

15:04

is precisely

15:06

not the thing itself the thing itself

15:11

the dingish is precisely what will never

15:15

appear as such what appear instead is

15:18

always and only the phenomenon. So when

15:22

I say that he said well against count we

15:26

have to admit that what

15:29

manifests itself as a phenomenon is the

15:32

thing itself or should be the thing

15:35

itself and if we are unable to do that

15:37

we are not good philosophers.

15:42

User

15:44

the

15:47

first introducer of phenomenology in the

15:50

modern meaning and was the professor

15:56

of which I was the assistant professor

16:01

as said in the ideas for phenomenology

16:05

pure

16:06

philosophy volume one section 24 the

16:10

very famous principle of all principles.

16:13

He says

16:15

that I

16:18

quote

16:20

approximatively not too

16:22

approximatively

16:24

any

16:26

intuition is a source of

16:36

right for a thing

16:39

to be received as it gave itself.

16:44

itself and within the

16:46

limit where it give

16:50

itself and this is against count

16:53

again that is to say

16:58

uh for a thing to

17:02

appear to appear as

17:04

such there is only one thing which is

17:09

required only an intuition and Shaong he

17:12

said both anchong and

17:14

intuition and intuition and this is

17:18

enough to give the right for this thing

17:23

to appear as a phenomenon. What does

17:26

that mean? That means that against

17:31

count the intuition is

17:35

enough if we have no adequate concept

17:38

for that

17:39

intuition. Possibly if we have no

17:42

intuition at all, it is not an argument

17:46

to turn down the appearing

17:50

uh thing.

17:53

This is

17:55

crucial. That is all phenomenon with an

17:59

intuition give

18:01

itself. And if this giveness is

18:07

not as I

18:10

say framed so to speak or coined into a

18:15

concept or a combination of concepts as

18:19

we do in positive

18:21

sciences. Nevertheless, this phenomenon

18:25

does appear and is allowed to

18:28

appear. That is there are

18:32

nonconceptual

18:33

non-conceptualized

18:35

phenomena indeed they are not

18:38

object but they are nevertheless

18:41

perfectly visible and by saying that

18:45

against can't in fact user willingly or

18:50

not consciously or not this is not the

18:53

point in fact make a rejoinder with

18:56

can't because can't in the Third critic

19:00

critic of the faculty of judgment de or

19:03

craft says about the what what he called

19:07

the judgment of beauty the aesthetic

19:10

judgment. He says what what is beautiful

19:12

is something which can please

19:18

everyone

19:21

universally as in

19:23

science a

19:25

demonstration uh is valid universally

19:29

for

19:30

everyone and everyone has to yield to

19:33

that to that demonstration. Same thing.

19:36

A real work of

19:38

art, a real achievement in art impose

19:44

itself or should impose itself to

19:48

anyone. And you are you are if you are

19:52

well educated, you will agree. And

19:54

nevertheless the con says and

20:01

this realize itself without concept.

20:09

The universality of the uh aesthetic

20:14

statement can be achieved without

20:19

uh the authority of the concept which is

20:23

exactly what user suggest but without

20:28

restricting this to the

20:32

uh word of art in general phenomenon

20:37

provided is given in intuition should be

20:40

described as such with or without the

20:43

grief without

20:46

concept. So this is the common bread of

20:52

phenomenology. And what I discovered is

20:57

that in the biblical

21:00

text, the event of the kingdom of

21:04

God, the uh opening

21:08

phenomenon as it is described for

21:11

instance in the gospel according to Mark

21:12

which is exactly about that. The kingdom

21:15

of God is now

21:18

here. This is

21:22

explained

21:24

as a

21:27

phenomenon

21:29

matching the

21:32

definition of it by us and

21:35

Haidiger. Let us read. You can check

21:42

that we have the same

21:47

um so to speak proverb or syntag or line

21:53

in the three synoptics in Luke

21:59

8:17, Mark

22:01

4:22 and

22:03

Matthew

22:06

10:26 which runs this way.

22:10

Refraim. There is nothing

22:16

uh nothing

22:20

um which is covered up. Nothing

22:25

hidden which will not

22:29

be discovered.

22:40

This is Matthew

22:44

10:26 with the kingdom of Christ of of

22:48

God and with the presence of Jesus of

22:52

Nazareth everything will be

22:57

uh

22:59

open and become visible.

23:02

Not only Jesus and the kingdom of God

23:05

but everything

23:07

around. So it

23:10

is as

23:12

if there was a universal

23:16

phenomenalization of everything because

23:19

of the phenomenalization of the kingdom

23:21

of God. And this uh this formula is very

23:26

surprising because it appears not in in

23:30

John, not in Paul but in the

23:34

three synoptic gospel which are as

23:38

people used to say to say uh which are

23:41

not conceptual. So is written by people

23:44

who are not not

23:46

education a bit stupid and with no good

23:50

Greek and so on.

23:52

And those lines in addition to that

23:55

appears without any context. It is not

23:58

in a parable. It is not in a dialogue

24:01

with Jesus. They they are suddenly they

24:04

appear in different place to the point

24:06

that Yas and other great German exeget

24:12

and others exe came to the conclusion

24:16

that possibly these were words spoken

24:21

actually spoken by by by Jesus. That's

24:24

why they were recorded and after that

24:27

they were put in the in the text and one

24:30

place or another because they they had

24:32

no context.

24:40

So nothing

24:44

uh Eden kan or

24:48

uh covered

24:51

[Music]

24:53

upon will remain

24:57

such and everything will be discovered.

25:01

Apocalyptic

25:05

Apocalyptic.

25:08

Apocalyptto is a word which is usually

25:11

translated rarely because it's not very

25:15

often used very often in the New

25:17

Testament by

25:20

apocalypsis revelation.

25:26

This was a positive uh discovery. That

25:30

is I asked

25:32

myself perhaps the right way or the less

25:36

inappropriate way to read the phenomenon

25:42

of the New Testament and the Old

25:45

Testament as well. in fact would be

25:49

precisely to consider that it is a

25:52

phenomenological

25:53

issue. It is through phenomenology that

25:56

we may be able to describe what has

25:59

happened

26:02

because one of the

26:06

uh biggest difficulties of modern uh

26:10

biblical sciences

26:13

uh in the period in the enlightenment

26:16

starting in the with the period of

26:18

starting with enlightenment was this and

26:22

uh this situation

26:24

was made absolutely crystal clear by

26:28

Bourman. That is a part of

26:32

uh what

26:35

is exposed in the new in the Bible old

26:40

and and new testament as well is

26:43

something that we can understand quite

26:46

well can be translated into uh

26:51

uh morals stand morals

26:55

uh duty uh uh towards the the other the

27:00

poor and so on. Uh it can be

27:04

even indication that we should uh

27:08

celebrate uh the greatness of God in

27:11

liturgy and so on. So far so good. But

27:16

there is another part which are miracles

27:22

uh great uh uh natural events which are

27:26

supposed to be the action of God and

27:29

many irrational

27:32

situations which uh in time of

27:35

enlightenment no rational reader can

27:38

accept and so we have to make a choice.

27:42

A part will be accepted, another part

27:45

will be dismissed and it was in the

27:48

language of Bman the program of

27:52

detoization

27:53

detoization and this program is not only

27:56

in Bman. He had started with Rena with

27:58

Stra with with everyone and with in fact

28:03

British empiricism.

28:06

This

28:07

divide is based on the idea that a

28:11

phenomenon which cannot be as they say

28:15

explained which mean which cannot be uh

28:19

understood with our concepts should be

28:24

turned

28:25

down exactly that and understand we

28:29

understand very well uh how far this

28:34

claim is correct. Correct. And how far

28:37

this claim can be

28:40

discussed? Because

28:43

if all the phenomena are

28:47

objects and should be objects in that

28:50

case the claim of de mythologization is

28:54

correct. But if philosophy itself tell

28:57

us that the phenomena are

29:01

not always

29:05

objects detoization should be detoized

29:09

itself.

29:11

That's the point and for theology indeed

29:15

it is a crucial

29:25

term. So this was the positive

29:29

uh

29:31

discovery. After that I asked myself

29:37

um what does that mean that the biblical

29:42

event to

29:44

oversimplify simplify that the biblical

29:46

event could be received as a

29:52

phenomenon and is it possible?

29:56

The answer is it is possible only

30:00

if we

30:03

uh

30:05

admit that this

30:09

phenomenon can be compared

30:12

to no

30:14

other that it is an absolute phenomenon.

30:17

Why to make that claim? Very simple. If

30:22

this phenomenon is a phenomenon among

30:26

others, it is not a revelation.

30:31

As Shelling said

30:34

once against

30:39

eagle, would

30:43

revelation in a strong meaning? Would

30:47

revelation be only

30:54

uh a

30:56

continuation and a confirmation of what

31:00

we can know. Without it and simply

31:05

within the limit of pure reason to speak

31:09

account, it would be completely useless

31:13

and we would have no need of it at all.

31:16

it would deserve no special interest. So

31:20

if there is a phenomenon of revelation,

31:23

it should be not only exceptional but

31:28

absolute. If it is not absolute, it is a

31:32

cultural development. There are many

31:34

other competing with that. It is not a

31:37

big deal.

31:40

But in what so in

31:44

what could we say that the biblical

31:48

phenomenon is an absolute

31:52

one? I think there

31:55

is some very

31:57

clear indication that we can

32:02

assume at least that this

32:05

phenomenon as shows itself by giving

32:09

itself without

32:12

uh absolutely without reservation and

32:16

that this self-giving

32:20

phenomenon has no equivalent

32:25

First,

32:31

uh

32:35

Jesus has said

32:39

that he

32:42

um in Jesus God has displayed his love.

32:47

Let us admit that. That is what the text

32:50

says. and he displayed this

32:56

love. This is a quotation of John 13:1,

33:01

the first line in the story of the

33:05

passion death of Jesus in in the gospel

33:09

according to John.

33:13

The text says, "Having

33:16

loved his friends, he loved

33:20

them unto the end." I tell us, that

33:25

is with an accomplishment.

33:28

And de facto when uh

33:33

Jesus

33:34

dies in John uh 19 28 his last word

33:41

is everything is

33:43

accomplished. So reach the

33:47

telos it is

33:49

impossible to go beyond to do more than

33:53

that. This claim of the telos in

33:55

philosophy philosophical language it's

33:58

very powerful for Aristotle the telos it

34:03

is the act the

34:05

ina led to the extreme point that is

34:11

thea the f to be in the tos so we could

34:15

say what is the phenomenon of Christ it

34:18

is the intela of a

34:21

self-giving agape

34:24

This is exactly what he says. We can

34:27

disagree but it is what he claimed to

34:29

be. The second point is that

34:33

uh in the history of religion as people

34:37

say uh Jesus Christ is the only one to

34:41

have claimed first

34:45

that I

34:47

am

34:49

without any sin. Uh John 8, who can

34:55

convince me of every of a

34:59

sin? To my knowledge, no one ever has

35:03

said I am completely innocent of any

35:07

sin. And the same

35:11

thing Jesus is able to say

35:15

this sentence which is absolutely

35:22

uh more than surprising

35:25

uh about the truth. It it does not say I

35:29

tell you the truth. Also uh in John as

35:34

the biblical scholar has pointed out uh

35:37

to say I agree to something I tell the

35:40

truth. This is the

35:41

truth. We say amen. And Jesus is the

35:46

only one to say amen.

35:49

Amen. To

35:51

say this is the truth truly.

35:56

And why he says that this is a true

35:59

story because he does not says he does

36:02

not

36:10

exhaust does not say the

36:13

truth. He says I am the

36:16

truth. No

36:19

philosopher Socrates has not said that.

36:23

uh and uh I think that in Islam the

36:27

prophet has not said that and he should

36:30

not and uh in the Asian religion as well

36:36

no one has ever said I am the

36:39

truth for us the truth is not

36:43

somebody it is a relation between

36:45

something and our mind that is the truth

36:50

so there is another meaning of the truth

36:53

which is which has a so a claim of an

36:59

authority which is

37:02

outstanding out the norms

37:06

and we have another indication of that

37:10

is the fact that Jesus has said ego me I

37:18

am

37:21

Before Abraham

37:25

was ego, I am from the beginning. Say I

37:30

am the alpha omega. I am the

37:33

ar again. We know what an ar principle,

37:38

a first principle, uh, first cause, a

37:43

first

37:44

rational postulate and thing like that

37:47

are what it is. It is what allows us to

37:53

uh understand by concept or what

37:56

something or what produce something. In

38:00

the case of Jesus, he says, "I am the

38:03

ar which is a blasphemy after all.

38:09

either he is wrong is a blasphemy and it

38:13

was a good sin to condemn him to death

38:16

or he's true.

38:19

So you could say that the consistency

38:23

of what Jesus has claimed to achieve and

38:28

to be leads to the conclusion that this

38:33

phenomenon has presented itself as the

38:36

absolute

38:38

phenomenon and it is what we

38:43

can call a revelation.

38:48

So revelation is not a content

38:51

uh this or

38:55

that part of the biblical text teaching

39:00

us this or that thing about God. Indeed

39:03

it is but it is fundamentally the event

39:07

of the absolute phenomenon. And to

39:10

conclude with with that

39:13

uh when Jesus when we understand very

39:18

well why started with that everything

39:22

became

39:23

visible

39:25

when the kingdom of

39:28

God made itself visible everything

39:34

else when Jesus is uh uh uh was arrested

39:40

and and put to trial against Senator

39:45

uh the first question he asked to answer

39:48

was uh what did you teach what did you

39:52

teach and the answer of Jesus is uh I

39:56

have no reason to tell you again what I

40:00

have said I've

40:02

always spoken

40:05

publicly in the open and the

40:09

the the the

40:12

uh the text

40:15

is I've never taught in the uh

40:25

uh in cover.

40:28

I

40:29

always I never it is in in

40:32

John 18 2020 20 it is I never said

40:39

anything in

40:42

crypto in the

40:45

secret this phenomenon made everything

40:48

visible because everything in that

40:50

phenomenon was

40:54

visible if we admit the this hypothesis

40:58

And this hypothesis has a great

41:00

advantage. It is the most consistent

41:03

interpretation of the text. The

41:08

text refers to such a phenomenon.

41:12

In that case, what

41:15

would mean to

41:20

uh positively accept this absolute

41:26

phenomenon? What is the right attitude

41:30

in front of this revelation?

41:37

Be

41:39

careful.

41:41

Uh if you

41:44

say I am uh in the age of rationality

41:48

and enlightenment

41:50

uh there is a part of that phenomenon

41:52

which can cannot be

41:54

understood. I deny the old phenomenon.

42:00

So this is an epistemologically speaking

42:04

a

42:07

very a very questionable

42:11

answer. If you

42:13

say

42:16

I'm a perfect

42:19

believer, I take it

42:23

all. It is from an epistemical point of

42:26

view very questionable as well.

42:29

Because

42:30

uh do

42:32

you

42:34

really claim to be able to take it all

42:40

although you don't understand

42:42

everything? What does that mean?

42:47

It's why there is another uh possible

42:50

answer and this possible answer is was

42:55

we know it because not only we

42:58

experience

43:00

it and I think any believer Christian

43:03

believer experienced it. It was

43:05

described for instance in uh John again

43:10

John

43:11

9 the story of the man born blind

43:18

blind.

43:20

So this

43:23

man says to Jesus do something for

43:26

me. And Jesus

43:29

uh make this blind man see.

43:34

And he

43:36

says he he tells him go to the temple

43:41

and according to the law uh make

43:46

rethread your

43:48

healing and be admitted again in the

43:52

community of the Rio of the of the of

43:56

the right people and you you you may

44:00

celebrate again in the temple and things

44:01

like that. So the guy goes to the temple

44:05

and the priest or the

44:07

Pharisees say and they

44:11

say not to him but woo as the

44:17

ill knew and the blind the former blind

44:22

man says uh I don't know who this

44:28

guy is but I can tell you I was blind

44:34

born and now I

44:36

see. So there is always a play in the

44:39

gospel in the church in the text of John

44:43

about the meaning of I don't know or I

44:48

know this is the position of the

44:50

witness. The witness is someone who know

44:55

for

44:57

sure a fact that is an event which

45:03

was de facto

45:05

achieved. This does not mean that he

45:08

understand what was going

45:10

on in a crime

45:13

novel. very

45:15

often the

45:19

witness say I'm absolutely sure that the

45:23

bad guy was told and things like that

45:27

and uh but I don't

45:29

know and there is no

45:31

contradiction I don't know who is he

45:34

where is he and so on and why he has

45:36

done that and so there is no

45:39

contradiction to say as both time I do

45:43

know the event which appeared to me I

45:47

don't know the meaning of the event

45:50

which is a classical sol situation of

45:53

the witness and in a legal process it is

45:56

very often like that and strangely the

46:00

detective or the police officer may know

46:04

more than the witness

46:08

uh about what really

46:11

happened but He needs the witness

46:13

because only the witness has seen uh the

46:17

the the

46:20

the deed done. He has no interpretation.

46:25

The police officer has an interpretation

46:27

but the police officer has not the has

46:31

not

46:32

experienced the deed itself.

46:36

So in front of an absolute

46:40

phenomenon, the right situation is to be

46:43

the

46:43

witness to be certain of what we have

46:47

experienced. Not

46:49

claiming to have a complete

46:52

understanding of this

46:56

event because we may uh get some insight

47:02

about the meaning of the

47:05

event. We understand a

47:08

bit we have some insight some concept

47:12

but not a sufficient concept. So

47:17

theology is the attempt to uh find out

47:24

uh concept able to uh give a meaning as

47:31

as broad as possible but always

47:34

incomplete to the event itself.

47:39

So the witness is precisely

47:42

the correct

47:45

epistemological

47:47

position between the denial of

47:54

the

47:56

common

47:58

non-believer and the

48:01

enthusiasm without good arguments of uh

48:06

the uh uh

48:10

um the uh

48:14

fanatic the real situation is to face

48:18

what in my language I call a saturated

48:22

phenomenon. A saturated phenomenon is

48:26

not it is a phenomenon something happen

48:30

and can be seen and described very

48:34

precisely in the intuition.

48:37

Nevertheless, we have no

48:41

uh sufficient

48:43

concept or sufficient set of

48:47

concepts to give to this

48:51

phenomenon the status of an object. An

48:55

object is a phenomenon which can

49:01

be integrally understood because it can

49:05

be measured. He has the same property

49:08

and he has only those properties. So we

49:11

can describe

49:13

itself produce itself because we can

49:17

reproduce itself. So the object

49:20

is this part of reality which can

49:29

be understood cover to cover. Sorry

49:34

understood by concept. a technical

49:36

object has this property this privilege

49:39

to be entirely

49:43

conceptualized and so when we have the

49:47

concept we can produce the object and it

49:51

is exactly what we do in the industry

49:53

and all that is what is difficult is to

49:56

have the concept of the product once you

49:59

have the concept of the product you have

50:01

the assembly line it can be automatized

50:03

and you produce the concept the object

50:05

object without difficulty. A saturated

50:08

phenomenon is a concept which cannot be

50:11

produced as an object and cannot be

50:15

reproduced as well.

50:18

It is clear that the work of art the

50:21

great work of art was achieved once once

50:25

forever and can not only cannot be

50:29

reproduced.

50:31

He can be reproduced by

50:33

picture cannot be

50:37

but it is precisely because he cannot be

50:40

reproduced that is so precious. And the

50:44

other thing we can explain and speak a

50:48

lot endlessly about a painting or

50:55

about a symphony. But we shall never

51:00

explain why this painting is so

51:05

beautiful, why this

51:07

uh melody is so

51:11

uh takes us that way. So to

51:17

understand a

51:19

painting it is

51:21

to reach his

51:25

beauty without explanation.

51:28

To some

51:31

extent this is saturated

51:33

phenomenon. In the case of the biblical

51:36

event we have the saturated phenomenon

51:40

by

51:41

excellence. And what is the life of a

51:45

disciple? A believer is the that means

51:50

this life it is the endless attempt to

51:54

understand better something which will

51:58

never become an

52:01

object. And it's why face is a way to

52:06

understand

52:08

that that is in front of a saturated the

52:12

more I

52:16

[Music]

52:20

uh I come near to

52:24

it. So the more I experience

52:28

it, the more I am I trust it.

52:33

But the more I know that I shall

52:39

never conceive it completely and

52:43

adequately by by by

52:45

concept. So

52:48

uh if you read a poem you will never

52:53

find out the concept according to which

52:57

this poem uh is a

53:03

masterpiece and to enjoy the poem as a

53:07

masterpiece means to admit that it is

53:11

not an

53:12

object. So faith is

53:16

really a a way of knowledge. It is

53:19

perhaps the only appropriate way of

53:24

knowledge. And we have to to keep in

53:29

mind this uh word by

53:32

[Music]

53:35

uh by user in the the

53:39

crisis. I should know exactly the Number

53:44

of the section is 45

53:47

perhaps. He

53:49

says what is a thing by opposition to an

53:53

object. What is a thing? It is something

53:57

that no one will ever

54:03

know. A

54:05

thing, a non-objective thing is

54:09

something which will never be known by

54:13

anyone. And don't say that this is

54:17

crazy. It is exactly what we experience

54:21

in the ordinary life.

54:26

uh the other the privilege of the your

54:31

partner your

54:34

partner you will never know it

54:40

completely and I hope so for myself and

54:44

for

54:47

you as long No as soon as you could

54:52

objectify this other your relationship

54:55

is

54:59

Uh why are we

55:03

uh when we are lucky enough to be in

55:06

that situation we are uh uh impassionate

55:11

in some field of knowledge and we do

55:16

that wondering why it is possible to be

55:21

paid to uh have so much fun in studying.

55:25

and teaching

55:30

things. I

55:33

think you are in that position when you

55:37

have happily given up the idea that you

55:41

will understand what you study.

55:48

I'm fascinating by philosophy because I

55:51

I know that there I will be always a bit

55:56

behind what I should be able to

56:00

understand and it's why I keep I keep

56:04

studying

56:06

philosophy and indeed we

56:11

uh we can understand

56:13

better the great principle of Many

56:18

theologians the definition of God is

56:20

that God has no

56:22

definition

56:25

or what is

56:27

God because

56:29

anyone has an idea of God it's very

56:33

important to understand that there was

56:36

an an witty humorist was not really

56:40

Christian in the 19th century

56:43

France we used to

56:47

God, God is known by everyone at least

56:51

by

56:53

name which is absolutely true. We see it

56:56

is a best commentary of Exodus

57:02

3:14.

57:04

So,

57:06

but what is our knowledge by name of

57:10

God? Well, what is the right by name?

57:15

Answer God is

57:19

what compared to

57:22

which nothing better or greater can be

57:26

thought. So God is the maximum of what

57:31

can be thought plus one.

57:37

So it's

57:39

why an non-existing god is lower than an

57:42

existing god and so on. But it is a very

57:45

good

57:47

definition. In fact, it is a comment on

57:50

this other argument

57:54

by St. Augustine. If you understand what

57:58

it is, it is not

58:01

him. And this is crucial. If would we

58:07

have an object knowledge of God, it

58:09

would not be

58:10

God. So God can be known only in so far

58:15

as it is no not known as an object

58:19

because the object by definition is

58:22

finite and God by definition is not. So

58:26

we have to be consistent epistemology

58:28

speaking. I mean, so my claim is that

58:32

faith is

58:36

an correct epistemological attitude in

58:40

some

58:43

cases. This being said, there is

58:51

a last

58:56

point. The last point

59:01

There are other points but for today it

59:03

will be the last

59:08

point. What does that mean to say

59:12

something about the revealed saturated

59:15

phenomenon speaking as a

59:18

witness? What does that mean?

59:22

That mean indeed that the speaking

59:28

I is not the producer or the landlord or

59:33

so to speak of uh what has to be

59:38

said. It is not the uh what K used to

59:44

call the

59:46

transcendental ego.

59:50

If what he has to

59:54

say is all

59:56

about the absolute phenomenon

1:00:01

uh which is not an

1:00:04

object. I cannot speak and think the

1:00:07

same way

1:00:10

uh according to which

1:00:14

I I deal with the

1:00:18

objects. So I cannot be the

1:00:21

transcendental subject

1:00:24

uh building up objects by

1:00:29

uh synthesis as in

1:00:32

countitution as the early

1:00:36

user mental fabrication of the object.

1:00:43

And when we sess when we know an object

1:00:48

and when we describe the

1:00:52

object how do we

1:00:56

speak we make a predication.

1:01:01

This uh was

1:01:03

explained formalized by Aristotle the

1:01:06

first but we have kept that in

1:01:10

all the

1:01:12

contemporary formal mathematical logic.

1:01:15

The predication

1:01:18

uh means that to say is

1:01:22

to utter a

1:01:25

sentence where we say

1:01:29

something, a predicate, a

1:01:33

quality, whatever we call that. We say

1:01:37

something upon

1:01:40

something in Greek to lean

1:01:44

tatinos to make a

1:01:46

predication. You can express this

1:01:49

predication

1:01:50

with symbolic science mathematical

1:01:53

science but at the end it is a

1:01:55

predication.

1:01:58

So in front of the absolute phenomenon

1:02:01

is it possible to uh have

1:02:04

predications and let us think uh back uh

1:02:08

to our point of the departure. Is Sakra

1:02:13

doctrina a science? Because if it is a

1:02:16

science sacred should as well uh use

1:02:23

predications saying something about

1:02:26

something is some properties about God.

1:02:32

God is we can say God is almighty. God

1:02:36

is infinite. God is

1:02:39

uh knowing

1:02:42

everything and so

1:02:44

on. This is a common way

1:02:47

uh of

1:02:49

speaking. Indeed, it is completely wrong

1:02:53

and

1:02:55

illegitimate.

1:02:56

Why? First,

1:02:59

because we don't know if God is

1:03:03

almighty or if God is almighty, we don't

1:03:08

know exactly what it

1:03:10

means. His might. If God is completely

1:03:15

uh he knows

1:03:17

everything, why

1:03:18

not? But what does it mean in the case

1:03:22

of God to know? Is this by sensible

1:03:26

experience? Is this by logical

1:03:29

conclusions? Is this what does that

1:03:31

mean? Does God have an an objective

1:03:36

knowledge of the

1:03:39

things? So So okay.

1:03:42

God has all those properties what they

1:03:44

mean in the case of God. So the point is

1:03:47

that everything we could attribute to

1:03:50

God is perhaps not divine enough to make

1:03:54

sense referred to

1:03:56

God and it is very likely that they are

1:04:00

cannot be referred as such. It's why in

1:04:04

scholasticism there was this doctrine of

1:04:06

analogy. So God is by analogy just by

1:04:10

analogy to our way to understand

1:04:12

justice. But it is it may be another

1:04:14

another

1:04:16

way. This is the first reason because we

1:04:19

we cannot predicate anything about

1:04:22

God. It is a good theology of the

1:04:26

incomprehensibility of God which is a

1:04:30

positive determination of God not a

1:04:33

negative. Because if God could be

1:04:36

perfectly well understandable, it would

1:04:39

not be God. It would be our mate in our

1:04:42

body and not God. But the other reason

1:04:46

why uh we cannot predicate

1:04:52

something about

1:04:54

God as something to say something about

1:04:57

something is because God is not

1:05:00

something is not a thing.

1:05:04

There are things in the world in our

1:05:08

world. There are

1:05:10

phenomena which can be reduced to the

1:05:13

object which can be kept as such and

1:05:16

some are the things. But God is not a

1:05:20

thing or you can say the God is imminent

1:05:23

to the world and so on. In that case the

1:05:26

question of God is if not suppressed at

1:05:29

least

1:05:34

downside. So we cannot say anything

1:05:39

about God as if God could be seen as

1:05:44

something. So what can we

1:05:47

do? And the

1:05:49

answer in theology is always the same.

1:05:54

If we cannot

1:05:56

leain cannot say something about God

1:06:02

uh because God is never equal to the

1:06:06

determination which could be uh selected

1:06:10

uh to uh describe

1:06:13

it. We can praise God as so this was the

1:06:21

great discovery of Dar

1:06:26

Disus this theologian of the 78th

1:06:30

century Syria who wrote who invented the

1:06:35

so-called mystical theology and we have

1:06:38

written the uh three trees of the divine

1:06:42

names and he says that about God. God

1:06:46

has all the names and known. He's both

1:06:52

polonimous and

1:06:56

anonymous. It is precisely because he

1:06:58

has no adequate name that all the names

1:07:02

can be referred to God. not as

1:07:05

properties of God uh given to God by

1:07:10

predication but because as

1:07:14

those names are borrowed from the

1:07:18

created word to some extent they they

1:07:21

come from

1:07:22

God as created things which

1:07:29

uh which are known and described by us

1:07:33

with those

1:07:36

So we can say that God after all is a

1:07:39

rock or a river

1:07:43

or a raging bull bull or anything you

1:07:48

want. A

1:07:50

lion

1:07:54

seducing

1:07:57

female because Yes.

1:08:02

Because all this was given to us by God.

1:08:07

So we

1:08:09

can give all this back to God not as a

1:08:13

determination of God but

1:08:20

as the offer we made to God. We

1:08:24

celebrate

1:08:27

God

1:08:29

under

1:08:33

the under the apparition of of those

1:08:37

determinations. That is we praise God

1:08:41

as oath to praise God as. So the use of

1:08:48

language of

1:08:50

legging about the absolute

1:08:54

phenomenon cannot be the predication. It

1:08:58

has to be the universal

1:09:02

praise. God is the objective of

1:09:06

praise not the object of

1:09:11

knowledge. And it

1:09:14

makes really

1:09:18

It makes sense because it is a way to

1:09:22

understand

1:09:23

why this old

1:09:27

rule is remains true that the lex

1:09:32

krenandi is experienced in the

1:09:37

lexandi prayer is not the

1:09:42

application of our uh intellectual

1:09:47

knowledge of God. It is the

1:09:49

reverse. Our intellectual knowledge of

1:09:53

God is justified only in so far that it

1:09:58

is a

1:10:00

consequence an application of our way of

1:10:04

praising God as or our way of praying or

1:10:11

prayer.

1:10:13

So it is it is central

1:10:15

this this inversion of the and what does

1:10:21

that mean that

1:10:24

uh we

1:10:27

speak in a non-objective being a way

1:10:31

with

1:10:33

God that means

1:10:37

that we don't

1:10:42

speak about God. We speak to

1:10:47

God. And the distinction between

1:10:50

speaking about something and speaking to

1:10:54

someone, we know it very

1:10:57

well. That is in the daily

1:11:00

life. When you call an Uber, for

1:11:05

instance, you have no intention to have

1:11:08

a long

1:11:09

personal conversation with the driver

1:11:13

and the guy has no intention to. So,

1:11:16

he's listen to his to to to his music or

1:11:20

he's speaking with someone else in his

1:11:24

cell phone.

1:11:28

If you may speak to the too long to the

1:11:33

driver, it could be perhaps the

1:11:35

beginning of a romance or or perhaps an

1:11:39

attack and we don't know. But anyway, it

1:11:41

is it is another regime of of the of

1:11:47

speech and we know perfectly well that

1:11:50

there are two ways of speaking.

1:11:55

speaking as

1:11:58

uh transmitting

1:12:01

informations, the exchange of

1:12:04

informations which uh are correct if we

1:12:09

deal with

1:12:10

objects and with and the other being

1:12:14

only

1:12:19

uh

1:12:22

the origin sending us information or the

1:12:26

the goal receiving informations. So in

1:12:31

the situation of exchange, commercial

1:12:35

exchange because informations are uh

1:12:38

something which we can pay for and be

1:12:41

paid

1:12:41

for objects or we we say something to

1:12:47

someone and in that case it is an inter

1:12:52

subjective use of language. It is

1:12:55

completely different.

1:12:59

is it is not the same vocabulary. It is

1:13:01

not the same syntax. It is not the same

1:13:04

uh gestures. It is not the same uh

1:13:09

elocution. It is absolutely different.

1:13:12

You

1:13:13

can if you don't know well a language

1:13:16

foreign

1:13:17

language you can speak to somebody but

1:13:21

it's very difficult to say something

1:13:23

about

1:13:25

something for instance.

1:13:28

So those two use of language is the

1:13:32

difference between them is something we

1:13:35

daily experience. It is

1:13:39

not farfetched sophism and it is exactly

1:13:43

what is at stake in the situation of

1:13:46

revelation and it's why and this will be

1:13:51

my conclusion. What does that mean to

1:13:53

have a

1:13:56

revelation? Because we use this formula

1:14:03

uh time to time without really

1:14:08

uh understanding what we what we say.

1:14:14

The first

1:14:15

time uh you are

1:14:18

able to achieve

1:14:21

something which previously you were

1:14:24

unable to

1:14:26

achieve which you have hopelessly

1:14:32

hopelessness hope to achieve during a

1:14:35

long time and we have in fact already

1:14:39

given up uh this

1:14:42

hope Uh for instance in

1:14:45

in sports to perform something or

1:14:51

in personal relationship with another or

1:14:56

in art or practicing any kind of

1:15:00

art. The moment

1:15:02

you you would like very much to have

1:15:05

done that and you know that you will not

1:15:09

be able to

1:15:10

succeed. And if

1:15:13

suddenly as this young boy who

1:15:17

was dragging back in in class during

1:15:22

years and suddenly once he had uh in

1:15:26

front of him the

1:15:29

equation

1:15:31

3x r

1:15:35

x² give

1:15:37

the how much is x and suddenly This

1:15:41

young boy has a revelation. You have to

1:15:44

divide the two part of the equation by x

1:15:48

and the remaining is three is equal to x

1:15:53

and suddenly everything became clear.

1:15:55

This was a revelation for this young

1:15:59

boy. And we have time to time such a

1:16:05

revelation. For

1:16:07

instance, if you are a very bad player

1:16:11

in uh the say baseball, so you are not

1:16:16

admitted in

1:16:21

the in the lineup. Yes, in the lineup.

1:16:26

So you are not admitted in the lineup,

1:16:28

not even in the far far away. So you are

1:16:32

humiliated but you you see that you

1:16:37

cannot bat correctly, you cannot pitch

1:16:39

correctly and you agree that you are not

1:16:43

good. In in many American

1:16:46

movies, the poor little boy which is

1:16:50

humiliated because he's not in the uh in

1:16:54

the

1:16:56

lineup. There

1:16:58

is one day

1:17:01

He

1:17:05

bats as God and s and suddenly he is in

1:17:10

the lineup. And there is a there there

1:17:13

is a movie

1:17:16

about the young guy who has the dream to

1:17:20

be the quarterback of the fighting Irish

1:17:23

in

1:17:24

Not. And suddenly he is

1:17:31

This is a revelation. The revelation is

1:17:33

not that he's suddenly able to bat or to

1:17:38

uh to uh send the ball to the

1:17:44

receiver. It is not only

1:17:46

that is the fact that he has a new

1:17:49

identity. He's now a big guy, the arrow

1:17:54

and so on. And it is is suddenly the

1:17:59

field has a new dimension for him

1:18:02

because he can master the field. He can

1:18:06

make the other

1:18:07

player score or anything like that. So

1:18:11

the space is different.

1:18:14

The time is different because forever it

1:18:18

will have been the quarterback of Notre

1:18:23

Dame when Notre Dame has defeated Boston

1:18:27

College for so this will remain forever

1:18:31

and they will be on the

1:18:34

wall his name and all all of fame he

1:18:38

will be in the all of Notre Dame and uh

1:18:44

is

1:18:44

is social position which is

1:18:47

modified and in fact his perception of

1:18:50

the entire world. This is a revelation

1:18:53

and very often we use revolution in with

1:18:57

that meaning that is experiencing that

1:19:01

saturated phenomenon although not an

1:19:05

object can be experienced understood and

1:19:10

as the saturated phenomenon is so to

1:19:14

speak bigger than you

1:19:17

are you are transformed by the saturated

1:19:20

phenomenon indeed

1:19:22

uh this uh process

1:19:27

um find this last

1:19:31

achievement I say that because I am I'm

1:19:33

Christian indeed in the absolute

1:19:36

phenomenon of biblical revelation indeed

1:19:39

but it is not without analogy in with

1:19:44

our daily

1:19:46

life we don't live we don't live among

1:19:51

only

1:19:54

objects and the question of revelation

1:19:57

is about

1:19:59

that. So revelation is a very

1:20:04

concrete access to the biblical text

1:20:09

very concrete much more than any

1:20:15

uh say scientific access.

1:20:19

Thank you for for your

1:20:35

attention. Thank you Jean Luke Marion

1:20:38

for that uh very provocative and

1:20:40

intriguing lecture. uh we have some time

1:20:43

for

1:20:44

questions and I'd like to call first

1:20:48

upon any students in the room who may

1:20:51

have a question and then we can go to

1:20:54

other people. Yes. Yes, Eli.

1:20:58

Um oh yeah, thank you. Uh thank you very

1:21:01

much for this lecture. I've been looking

1:21:02

forward to it a long time and it didn't

1:21:04

disappoint. Um I'm interested in Jesus

1:21:08

as um the visible God and the botific

1:21:13

vision given to us through uh through

1:21:16

Jesus. And you say when a saturated

1:21:18

phenomenon is bigger than you are, you

1:21:20

are transformed by it. I wonder can you

1:21:24

be not only transformed by a saturated

1:21:26

phenomenon but also united to it? Yeah.

1:21:32

No, this is your your

1:21:35

final uh line is very

1:21:39

important. When we know a phenomenon as

1:21:43

an

1:21:44

object, we distance ourself of that

1:21:48

object. That is we are never transformed

1:21:52

by an object.

1:21:55

Uh it's why the knowledge of the

1:21:58

object give us the impression of power

1:22:02

and

1:22:03

security because we are not a

1:22:05

stake. We produce it, reproduce it, we

1:22:10

we we rule it.

1:22:14

The reason why the saturated

1:22:17

phenomenon

1:22:18

has an intimidating impact on

1:22:23

us, it is not only because we don't

1:22:27

understand it

1:22:28

completely. In s there are cases where

1:22:31

we are very pleased not to understand

1:22:33

what is going on. No, it is because this

1:22:39

phenomenon attract us. It is no more at

1:22:43

distance. We are involved in it. We are

1:22:46

committed to it because he is always

1:22:49

more powerful than we are. We are not

1:22:52

transcendental object anymore. We are

1:22:54

the

1:22:57

uh the

1:22:59

um witness and we are united to it.

1:23:04

That's the

1:23:05

point. And

1:23:07

it so it is always to be united to a

1:23:12

phenomenon for good. This is not always

1:23:17

it can be frighten when we are addicted

1:23:20

to something. It is

1:23:22

frightening. The union is not always a

1:23:25

good thing. When you are addicted to a

1:23:28

drug, you

1:23:31

are united to it. And this is a terrible

1:23:36

ordeal. But clearly the question of the

1:23:40

union with the saturated fundamental is

1:23:45

central. You are right.

1:23:56

I I have a question about the

1:23:58

relationship between uh the revelation

1:24:02

like a phenomenon and the intentionality

1:24:06

of of

1:24:08

love. Um because

1:24:13

uh revelation amplify stand our

1:24:23

horizont to to practice to to learn a

1:24:27

new way of seeing this kind of

1:24:31

phenomenons. Mhm. And I think maybe our

1:24:37

in intentionality

1:24:41

uh need to be changed. Yes. So what what

1:24:46

kind of intentionality we need to to

1:24:51

uh cultivate? Mhm. Mhm.

1:24:55

Uh what you ask for is I would say is

1:24:59

well known in

1:25:01

fiction. Uh the first meaning of

1:25:05

intentionality is the

1:25:07

uh the intentionality coming

1:25:11

from the ego, the eye.

1:25:16

uh

1:25:20

uh in which goes out to the world. It is

1:25:25

the intentionality the first discovered

1:25:28

by

1:25:30

user. Any consciousness is consciousness

1:25:34

of something which should

1:25:37

be understood that any consciousness is

1:25:42

consciousness of something different

1:25:43

than itself.

1:25:46

So you have

1:25:52

uh an

1:25:55

intentionality through which the

1:25:59

ego display power of knowing the world.

1:26:05

In the case of a saturated

1:26:07

phenomenon we have what live in us. He

1:26:10

was the first to say

1:26:13

that as called a counter

1:26:19

intentionality. That is when you are in

1:26:24

face to face to the the face of the

1:26:26

other, you are in an ethical

1:26:30

relationship and not a theoretical

1:26:32

relationship.

1:26:34

As long as you have a theoretical

1:26:37

relationship with the other, the other

1:26:39

is simply an

1:26:42

articulated animated

1:26:45

object, a

1:26:48

robot. And so it is not

1:26:51

another. You have no commitment, ethical

1:26:54

commitment to it.

1:26:57

The uh other the face of the other start

1:27:00

to

1:27:02

be another another eye. When you feel

1:27:06

yourself under

1:27:09

uh if not the control at least under the

1:27:12

claim, the silent claim of that face and

1:27:18

that gaze of the other.

1:27:21

uh implicitly telling to you you shall

1:27:26

not murder

1:27:28

me which is the first ethical

1:27:32

relationship. In that case the

1:27:37

um the momentum of the

1:27:43

intentionality is

1:27:45

reversed. This is the

1:27:47

counterintentionality. So Levas has

1:27:50

explained expressed that perfectly well

1:27:54

and it was a great

1:27:57

achievement but only in the ethical

1:28:01

relation and I suggested that this

1:28:05

counter intentionality reverted

1:28:08

intentionality has to be used

1:28:12

uh in many other situations in Verotic F

1:28:16

indeed in in in

1:28:20

in

1:28:21

theological experience as well and many

1:28:24

other

1:28:25

cases. So there is a reverse a reversal

1:28:29

of intentionality is absolutely

1:28:35

central questions.

1:28:44

Hello thank you. Um I have a question

1:28:47

about um how the revelation of God um

1:28:51

may in some cases be discontinuous with

1:28:55

saturated phenomenon. Um uh I'm I'm

1:28:58

curious particularly about um the

1:29:01

condition of human sin and how that

1:29:04

changes how God has to reveal himself to

1:29:07

us. Is there a way in which um the

1:29:10

revelation of scripture and the

1:29:11

revelation of God is discontinuous with

1:29:13

other phenomenon that you've been

1:29:15

they've been talking about or is it

1:29:16

simply all the way on the end of a

1:29:19

spectrum that is that is continuous?

1:29:21

Yeah, I don't get your point. Will you

1:29:23

tell me more clearly what your question?

1:29:28

Yeah.

1:29:29

Um it it sounds like um the revelation

1:29:33

you've been describing um of scripture

1:29:36

is um it follows the principle of husel

1:29:40

that it's um manifests according to its

1:29:43

giveness.

1:29:45

Um but um I I'm wondering if there's um

1:29:50

a way in which the revelation of God is

1:29:52

unique. it's different than than that

1:29:56

manifestation in some way or or if it

1:29:59

isn't um um particularly in regards to

1:30:02

to human sin. Is there some resistance

1:30:05

yes to um the revelation of God that um

1:30:09

that adds to to the um description of

1:30:12

phenomenology you're given.

1:30:15

The concept of resistance is central. I

1:30:18

make great use of it in this book. Uh

1:30:22

resistance means that

1:30:25

um the

1:30:28

light shed by uh the absolute fedon

1:30:37

uh is partly

1:30:40

painful because uh

1:30:44

uh he make visible it makes vis visible

1:30:50

not only the around me but I myself as

1:30:56

well

1:30:59

and as many political men I'm not very

1:31:05

pleased to have what what I have done

1:31:08

made

1:31:10

public and in that case we can react but

1:31:15

in order

1:31:17

to cover

1:31:20

up what we have

1:31:23

done to keep it the

1:31:26

secret. We prefer to deny the light

1:31:32

in as all that we prefer that everything

1:31:38

remains uh in the

1:31:41

dark to uh

1:31:46

u to avoid light on my own behavior.

1:31:52

This was explained by Augustine with the

1:31:55

doctrine of veritas luch veritas

1:31:59

redarance

1:32:00

in book 10 of the conventionist. It is

1:32:06

uh the one of the reason why uh divine

1:32:11

revelation is not easily received and

1:32:16

accepted is precisely

1:32:19

because it it it is a

1:32:23

threat for the state of the thing as

1:32:25

they are. And the more uh

1:32:32

Jesus reveals himself, the more he

1:32:36

reveals the state of mind of people

1:32:40

around him, the more he's rejected.

1:32:45

So is it is surprising because the

1:32:51

failure of Jesus to convince

1:32:56

uh

1:33:00

is the people of his generation is

1:33:04

is absolutely complete the complete

1:33:07

failure.

1:33:11

If the final goal

1:33:15

was to be well received, if you want to

1:33:19

be well received, say what people

1:33:25

expect first rule of political life

1:33:29

anyway. Say what people want to hear.

1:33:34

But if you say the

1:33:36

truth and if you are really the

1:33:40

truth, don't be a surprise if this make

1:33:45

you some

1:33:48

arm. And uh this is exactly the

1:33:52

situation.

1:33:55

So what the moral theology calls

1:34:00

sin as

1:34:03

uh an

1:34:05

epistemological

1:34:07

meaning. Not only we are not sinner

1:34:10

because we are bad guy or weak and

1:34:12

things like that. We are sinner because

1:34:15

we are

1:34:17

rational and we want to keep control of

1:34:21

our destiny of our public image of

1:34:25

our self-esteem and so on. So we had

1:34:29

good reason to be sinner and to keep to

1:34:34

stick to our sins.

1:34:38

This is not absurd. It is very

1:34:41

logical terrible logic but is very is

1:34:44

very

1:34:56

logical. Uh thank you very much indeed

1:34:59

uh for this. Uh I want to ask about what

1:35:02

how this responds what you're unfolding

1:35:06

with the reading of scripture and

1:35:08

perhaps to the work of Rur who I know

1:35:10

you know well um uh for instance the I

1:35:15

am uh that you mentioned is so focal and

1:35:18

Jesus is taking us back to God

1:35:20

disclosing Godself as the I am

1:35:22

unknowable and again the alpha and the

1:35:25

omega in the revelation is a version of

1:35:27

this I am the unknowable. So I think

1:35:30

it's been a consensus from the first

1:35:32

century at least that amongst Christian

1:35:34

and Jewish scholars that God is

1:35:35

technically unknowable and and actually

1:35:38

Dianius says you don't take the names

1:35:40

from the created order you take them

1:35:41

only from scripture. Now I think one

1:35:45

thing that ra hesitancy ra has about

1:35:47

phenomenology is he wonders how it's

1:35:50

going to address what you might call the

1:35:53

tessillation of Christian readings of

1:35:55

the text. the fact that we're reading

1:35:57

across scripture, we're finding that

1:35:59

disclosure coming up through us through

1:36:00

many texts, through Exodus, through

1:36:02

Isaiah, through the Psalms. It's not

1:36:04

simply from what Jesus said in the

1:36:06

Gospel. So, I wonder what you would how

1:36:08

you would your position unfolds into a

1:36:11

reading of of scripture more broadly.

1:36:13

Thank you. You know I I gave only

1:36:17

some some very uh simple indications but

1:36:24

indeed what I said about the absolute

1:36:27

phenomenon uh you can document that in

1:36:31

many other

1:36:32

text not only in the New Testament but

1:36:35

in the first testament as well. All the

1:36:38

tanes for instance of the first

1:36:42

testament have to be understood as

1:36:45

saturated phenomena. And I was very

1:36:48

pleased when I started to develop the

1:36:52

idea of the saturated phenomena.

1:36:56

uh the

1:36:59

uh biblique biblical review which is

1:37:02

published by the u the eco biblique the

1:37:07

Jerusalem biblical school in

1:37:11

Jerusalem run by the Dominican brothers

1:37:14

which is a great place for

1:37:17

for the biblical studies and they they

1:37:22

they made a conference and published an

1:37:25

issue

1:37:26

devoted to the fact that you can use

1:37:31

uh it is better to to to use the concept

1:37:36

of saturated phenomenon to explain the

1:37:40

the first testament so I'm exactly

1:37:43

online

1:37:45

with no question about

1:37:50

that thanking
