Wednesday, August 6th, International

Scuba Day, and here are top stories. And
0:55
for today's Taiwan news, US President
0:58
Donald Trump told CNBC he may announce
1:01
new tariffs on semiconductors and chips
1:03
as early as next week. He also claimed
1:06
TSMC will invest $30 billion to build
1:10
the world's largest chip plant in
1:12
Arizona. Taipei prosecutors rated sites
1:15
linked to Juway Energy Coal Ltd for
1:18
illegally issuing securities and raising
1:20
over 100 million NTD without approval.
1:24
The company promised investors returns
1:26
of 25 to 42% and a three-year buyback
1:30
plan. Seven suspects, including the
1:32
company head, were detained after
1:34
investigation. Cath Pacific flight CX565
1:39
from Osaka to Taipei was delayed twice
1:42
with some passengers boarding at 6:30
1:44
p.m. Upon arrival, all checked luggage
1:47
was missing. The airline said bags would
1:49
be delivered to homes but gave no
1:52
further explanation causing passengers
1:54
to call it a nightmare flight. And in
1:57
global news, the Philippine and Indian
2:00
navies have sailed together for the
2:01
first time in the South China Sea as
2:04
President Ferdinand Marcos left Manila
2:07
for New Delhi on a state visit. The
2:10
Philippines has conducted maritime
2:12
cooperative activities with foreign
2:14
navies since late 2023 as part of its
2:17
push to counter China's expansive claims
2:20
in the waterway, including joint sales
2:23
with treaty ally the United States as

well as Japan, Australia, France, and

>> We share a common vision for free, open,

region. Philippine military chief Romeo
2:36
Bronner said the idea for the two-day
2:38
joint sale came about when he met his
2:41
counterpart in India in March. Bronner
2:43
told reporters, "We did not experience
2:45
any untoward incidents, but there are
2:47
still those shadowing us as we had
2:50
already expected without naming China."
2:52
China's foreign ministry said
2:54
territorial and maritime disputes should
2:56
be resolved between the countries
2:58
directly involved and that no third
2:59
party should intervene. A 2016 ruling by
3:02
an international arbitral tribunal found
3:05
that Beijing's sweeping claims have no
3:07
basis under international law, a
3:09
decision China rejects.
3:11
>> Property tycoon Bang pleaded guilty to
3:15
one charge of obstructing justice on
3:17
Monday in a landmark corruption case
3:20
that led to the jailing of former
3:22
transport minister S isan last year.
3:26
However, both the prosecution and
3:27
defense agreed to grant judicial mercy
3:30
given his chronic illness and argued for
3:33
him to be fined in lie of imprisonment.
3:36
He will be sentenced on August 15th. A
3:39
second charge of abetting an offense was
3:42
also taken into consideration. Judicial
3:45
mercy gives courts the authority to
3:47
impose a more lenient sentence in
3:49
exceptional mitigating circumstances
3:51
such as a terminal illness or when
3:53
imprisonment could pose a high risk of
3:55
endangering a life. The defense
3:56
submitted that Ang suffers from multiple
3:58
myyoma, an incurable cancer that affects
4:01
his blood plasma cells and renders him

4:05
the subject of major intrigue in
4:07
Singapore, a wealthy financial hub that
4:10
offers ministers salaries of more than 1
4:12
million Singapore dollars to deter graft
4:14
and prides itself on its reputation for
4:16
clean governance. Ang had informed ICE
4:19

4:20
questioned and that a private flight
4:22

4:24
for a flight from Singapore to Doha had
4:27
been seized by the corruption watchdog
4:29
during investigations.
4:57
South Korea's military said it had begun
4:59
removing loudspeakers along its border
5:02
with rival North Korea in a move aimed
5:04
at reducing tensions. The speakers had
5:07
previously been used to blast anti-North
5:09
Korean propaganda across the border, but
5:12
the South's new Liberal government
5:13
halted the broadcasts in June as a
5:16
consiliatory gesture. It aims to rebuild
5:19
trust and revive dialogue with
5:20
Pyongyang, which has largely cut off
5:23
cooperation with the South in recent
5:25
years. South Korea's defense ministry
5:27
said the physical removal of the
5:29
loudspeakers from the border was another
5:31
practical measure aimed at easing
5:33
tensions between the war divided corers
5:35
and that it does not affect the south's
5:37
military readiness. They did not share
5:39
specific details on how the removed
5:41
loudspeakers will be stored or whether
5:43
they could be quickly redeployed to the
5:45
border if tensions flare again between
5:47
the corers. There were no discussions
5:49
between the two militaries ahead of the
5:51
south's decision to remove the speakers.
5:53
North Korea, which is extremely
5:55
sensitive to any outside criticism of
5:57
its authoritarian leadership, and Kim
5:59
Jong-un, did not immediately comment on
6:01
the South Korean step.
6:04
>> Brazil's Supreme Court on Monday ordered
6:06
the House arrest of former President
6:08
Jaier Bolsiniro, who is on trial for
6:11
allegedly masterminding a coup plot to
6:14
remain in office despite his defeat in
6:17
the 2022 election. Justice Alexander Di
6:21
Marice, who oversees the case against
6:23
Bolsiniro before the top court, said in
6:26
his decision that the 70-year-old former
6:29
president had violated precautionary
6:31
measures imposed on him by posting
6:34
content on the social media channels of
6:36
his three lawmaker sons. The trial of
6:39
the far-right leader is receiving
6:41
renewed attention after US President
6:43
Donald Trump directly tied a 50% tariff
6:46
on imported Brazilian goods to his
6:47
allies judicial situation. Trump has
6:50
called the proceedings a witch hunt,
6:52
triggering nationalist reactions from
6:54
leaders of all branches of power in
6:56
Brazil. Brazil's prosecutors accuse
6:58
Bolsinaro of heading a criminal
7:00
organization that plotted to overturn
7:02
the election, including plans to kill
7:04
Lula and Justice Demorice after the
7:06
far-right leader narrowly lost his
7:08
re-election bid in 2022. Monday's order
7:11
followed one from the top court last
7:13
month that required Bolsinaro to wear an
7:15
electronic ankle monitor and imposed a
7:17
curfew on his activities while the
7:19
proceedings are underway. According to a
7:22
new report by a leading medical journal,
7:24
a global plastics crisis is costing
7:27
governments and taxpayers $1.5 trillion
7:30
annually as they try to cope with
7:33
escalating injuries, disability, and
7:35
deaths as the substance pollutes our
7:37
lands, seas, and bodies. Based on a
7:40
review of recent studies published by
7:42
the Lancet, plastic production is on
7:45
course to triple by60.

8:04
warning about the ubiquity and threat
8:06
posed by plastic which the journal
8:08
called the defining material of our age.
8:11
After decades of scientists warning
8:13
about plastic being found in the oceans
8:15
and rivers, microplastics are now being
8:17
discovered inside humans, including in
8:19
breast milk and brain tissue. The report
8:21
was launched to coincide with the talks
8:23
in Geneva, where 175 countries are
8:26
trying to forge the world's first global
8:28
plastics treaty. A group of countries

including China, Russia, and Saudi

9:31
International Scuba Day had its
9:33
inaugural celebration in 2023 when a
9:36
group of passionate divers work together
9:39
to promote and celebrate the important
9:41
experience that comes from diving. In
9:44
addition, the day is meant to unite
9:46
divers from all over the world and
9:48
promote the community of ocean lovers.
9:50
The date of this event was chosen
9:52
because the FZ Lupier diving apparatus

was unveiled in 1926.
