0:00

hello everyone welcome or welcome back

0:02

to my channel my name is Olivia and I

0:05

make videos about anthropology every

0:07

single Sunday and today I am talking

0:10

about the biggest question that I could

0:12

probably talk about on this channel and

0:14

that is what is anthropology and you may

0:17

be surprised that it's a little more

0:19

complicated than you might think so on

0:21

my channel I have many videos about

0:24

anthropology taking a deep dive into

0:26

keywords different themes that you might

0:28

need to know the different topics within

0:30

anthropology but today I am going to be

0:33

sharing with you guys the broad

0:35

definition of anthropology and give you

0:37

a taste of all the things that make

0:39

anthropology anthropology so the first

0:42

thing that we're going to start with is

0:43

this basic definition that you would

0:45

find if you were to Google anthropology

0:47

so according to Google anthropology is

0:50

the study of human societies and

0:52

cultures and their development but let

0:55

me tell you that this definition leaves

0:58

out so much now the one thing that I do

1:01

want you to take away from this Google

1:03

definition that's probably the biggest

1:05

and most basic thing when it comes to

1:07

the field of anthropology is that

1:09

anthropology is the study of humans now

1:13

the Greek root word anthrop means human

1:16

and ology tends to mean the branch of

1:19

knowledge so when you put these two

1:20

things together you have the branch of

1:22

knowledge concerning humans so

1:25

anthropology more broadly is the science

1:28

of human beings and I mean I'm a human

1:31

you're a human I think this should be

1:33

interesting to everybody so now we're

1:36

gonna go beyond this basic Google

1:37

definition and I want to dive in more

1:39

deeply into what really makes

1:41

anthropology anthropology all right so

1:43

this might be obvious but humans are a

1:47

really really broad area of study

1:50

there's a lot that you could learn about

1:52

people and so anthropology as a growing

1:56

field for a long time scientists and

1:58

anthropologists were trying to figure

2:00

out how to break it down into something

2:02

more manageable and so anthropology

2:06

today is broken up into four subfields

2:10

and basically what I mean by this is

2:11

anthropology because it's so broad the

2:14

things that anthropologists study have

2:17

been broken down into four different

2:19

categories now these subfields the four

2:22

main subfields of anthropology are

2:25

biological anthropology cultural

2:27

anthropology linguistic anthropology and

2:31

Archeology these four subfields together

2:33

create the entire field that is

2:36

anthropology now each one of these

2:38

subfields takes a very specialized

2:41

approach when it comes to understanding

2:43

human beings and if you decide to enter

2:46

the field of anthropology you

2:48

unfortunately because the nature of the

2:51

subject is so broad you can't be an

2:53

expert in every single thing so what

2:57

anthropologists do or what students of

2:59

anthropo apology do is they tend to pick

3:02

one field or one subfield of

3:04

anthropology that stands out the most to

3:07

them and specialize in it so during my

3:10

time as an undergraduate student I

3:12

specialized in biological anthropology

3:15

this is the part of anthropology that

3:17

really stood out to me that grabbed my

3:18

attention so my course load was very

3:21

biased in that I was taking a lot more

3:22

biological anthropology courses than

3:25

other like cultural and linguistic

3:27

anthropology courses but a little more

3:29

on that later now I don't want to

3:30

complicate things too early on in this

3:32

video so now we're going to switch gears

3:34

a little bit and I want to give you guys

3:36

a basic introduction into each one of

3:39

the main four anthropology subfields and

3:42

I want you guys to pay attention because

3:43

if one of these subfields does stand out

3:46

to you that could be a clue as to which

3:49

area of anthropology you might want to

3:51

enter into if this is something that

3:53

interests you okay yeah all right so the

3:57

first subfield that we're going to be

3:58

talking about is biological anthropology

4:01

now as I mentioned earlier in the video

4:04

biological anthropology is the one that

4:06

definitely excites me the most it's also

4:10

known as physical anthropology so if you

4:12

ever hear someone talking about physical

4:14

anthropology you can generally assume

4:16

that that's pretty synonymous with

4:18

biological anthropology and biological

4:21

anthropology is the study of human

4:24

biology and evolution now once again

4:27

this is really broad there is a lot that

4:30

gets covered in biological anthropology

4:32

but some of the big things that you

4:34

might learn as a student are natural

4:37

selection The evolutionary history of

4:40

homo sapien so I remember in one of the

4:42

introductory courses that I took I had

4:45

to do a lot of memorizing of all our

4:47

ancient ancestors there's Homo habilis

4:50

homo heidelbergensis homo neanderthalis

4:53

Australopithecus all that kind of stuff

4:56

and guys I have forgotten a lot so it's

4:59

a lot of understanding the past our

5:02

human past biologically and

5:04

evolutionarily speaking but there's also

5:06

more modern Fields within biological

5:09

anthropology including forensics

5:11

molecular anthropology so looking at

5:13

like how our bodies interact with

5:14

disease and so much more so that's

5:17

biological anthropology it's amazing I

5:19

highly encourage you guys to go check it

5:21

out now cultural anthropology I think is

5:24

what people tend to associate the most

5:27

strongly with the field of anthropology

5:29

I think people don't always know that

5:32

Linguistics and biology are involved in

5:35

anthropology but cultural anthropology I

5:38

think tends to get the most attention

5:40

and is the most understood when it comes

5:43

to the field but cultural anthropology

5:45

is the study of human societies human

5:47

cultures and their development so one of

5:51

the biggest forms of research within

5:52

cultural anthropology is something

5:54

called ethnographic field work so you

5:57

have anthropologists immersing

5:59

themselves in in a different part of the

6:00

world this could be a different

6:01

Community a different culture completely

6:04

opposite side of the world the country

6:05

whatever it is and trying to understand

6:08

this culture or a facet of a certain

6:10

culture more deeply so I actually during

6:13

college had the opportunity to read an

6:16

ethnography which is the book for this

6:18

kind of research ethnographic field work

6:21

the research goes into a book called an

6:23

ethnography I had the opportunity to

6:26

read an ethnography written by a

6:28

cultural Anthropologist who studied

6:30

marriage systems in a specific region of

6:32

China in the 1960s and 70s I believe and

6:37

so I think that gives you a good idea of

6:39

what a cultural Anthropologist goes to

6:41

do they're trying to understand a

6:43

specific group of people their Customs

6:46

their Traditions why or why not people

6:48

make certain decisions I did want to say

6:51

that cultural anthropology research gets

6:54

done in a multitude of ways I just think

6:57

that this kind of research the

6:59

ethnographic field study is the most

7:01

popular and most well known so that's

7:03

what I wanted to talk about in this

7:05

section where we describe cultural

7:07

anthropology really quickly if any of

7:09

these subfields are sounding interesting

7:11

to you I do have more in-depth videos on

7:13

my channel going into each of them

7:16

in a lot more detail so if you want to

7:18

check those out I will leave them in the

7:20

description box down below but now on to

7:22

linguistic anthropology now linguistic

7:25

anthropology is a really amazing

7:27

subfield in the field of anthropology

7:29

and it basically examines how language

7:32

impacts human societies and cultures but

7:35

also how we impact language language is

7:38

an ever-growing ever-changing thing that

7:41

exists

7:42

all over the world and in many ways is

7:45

what sets humans apart from other

7:47

species so to get to study something and

7:51

examine something that's so uniquely

7:53

human is a really amazing opportunity

7:55

and something that I think often does

7:57

get overlooked when it comes to the

7:59

value of anthropology and understanding

8:02

human societies now the fourth and final

8:04

subfield of anthropology that I do think

8:07

is very well known similar to cultural

8:09

anthropology is the field of archeology

8:12

now archeology is the study of human

8:15

past through material culture and

8:18

cultural remains I think people often

8:21

forget that archeology is you know

8:24

understanding humans and human cultures

8:26

through the physical items that get left

8:28

behind within the archaeological record

8:30

this is called material culture and

8:33

trying to understand not only what the

8:36

physical purpose of these items were for

8:38

the people who use them but also the

8:40

meaning that gets conveyed through

8:42

through certain items that we find in

8:44

the archaeological record

8:45

so an example of this might be gosh I

8:50

did not prepare an example

8:56

an example of this might be people's

8:58

homes right from an ancient civilization

9:01

so maybe some homes were meant for

9:03

higher status individuals not only

9:05

understanding that this home has a

9:07

physical purpose being it's where people

9:09

live but also understanding that certain

9:11

homes represent higher status and convey

9:14

meaning within the society and within

9:16

that culture now obviously these are

9:18

things that are very difficult to

9:20

extract and extrapolate because we don't

9:23

have access to a lot of these societies

9:26

and civilizations but it creates this

9:29

really interesting question and one that

9:31

in a lot of ways will never answer and

9:34

that is you know who are the people of

9:37

the past what did they value what did

9:39

they do and how did we start there and

9:42

get to where we are today so once again

9:44

archeology really just is an amazing

9:47

more historically focused part of

9:49

anthropology that's definitely still

9:51

alive and thriving today now finally I

9:53

wanted to throw in here the fifth

9:55

subfield what Olivia there's only four I

9:58

know technically guys there's four but

10:01

there's one fifth subfield of

10:03

anthropology that often gets left out of

10:06

these introductory videos which is

10:08

exactly why I wanted to mention it here

10:10

and so there is this official unofficial

10:13

depends on who you ask but I think it's

10:15

pretty official fifth subfield of

10:18

anthropology called applied anthropology

10:21

now this is really important and I'm

10:23

going to tell you why so I've talked to

10:25

you guys about anthropology more broadly

10:28

the four subfields

10:30

but what does any of that matter right

10:33

anthropology is a research field why

10:35

does any of that research matter in any

10:38

of those subfields if we're not doing

10:40

anything with it right apply it

10:43

anthropology is applying what we've

10:45

learned from biological anthropology

10:47

cultural anthropology linguistic

10:49

anthropology and Archeology applying

10:52

what we've learned from each of these

10:53

subfields into action into our current

10:56

communities and current cultures all

10:58

around the world so let's say you did an

11:01

anthropological study on smoking and the

11:04

impacts of that on a community and we

11:06

learned that it was bad sorry guys I'm

11:09

running out of brain power as we

11:11

approach the end of this video

11:13

if we can look at that anthropological

11:15

study and say wow what can we do with

11:18

this conclusion to actually impact

11:21

people's lives improve people's lives

11:24

for the better that's the whole field of

11:26

Applied anthropology it's using what

11:28

we've learned to actually make changes

11:30

in real cultures and real communities

11:31

all over the world and I think applied

11:34

anthropology is so important I have

11:36

talked about it before on this channel

11:37

it's amazing and wonderful and I think

11:40

everyone should appreciate it and

11:42

respect it so closing out this video you

11:44

guys we are all humans which in itself I

11:47

think is a reason to care about

11:49

anthropology anthropology allows us to

11:52

understand ourselves it allows us to

11:54

understand people on the complete

11:56

opposite side of the world it creates

11:59

this you know understanding for our

12:00

similarities and our differences and is

12:03

such an important field that seriously

12:05

gets overlooked all the time now if any

12:08

of this sounded interesting to you guys

12:10

I have over a hundred videos on my

12:13

channel talking about anthropology deep

12:15

dives into these subfields into key

12:17

terms into my personal experience as a

12:21

UCLA anthropology student

12:23

everything that you can think of so if

12:26

you want to take the plunge and learn

12:28

more about anthropology don't forget to

12:30

go check out any of those videos on my

12:32

channel also don't forget to like And

12:35

subscribe because I mean who doesn't

12:37

want to be a part of a fun little nerdy

12:39

anthropological Community we have a good

12:42

time over here and I love talking to

12:44

everybody in the comment section down

12:45

below so yeah I hope you guys are having

12:48

a great week a great day and I will see

12:51

you all next Monday all right you guys

12:53

bye
