hey guys welcome back to my channel this

0:01

is Terry your favorite host and YouTuber

0:04

you might be scratching your heads and

0:05

wondering why is Terry speaking English

0:07

today well here's the deal does it

0:09

really matter no because I'll have

0:11

subtitles in both English and Chinese so

0:13

you can stop whining about it the truth

0:15

is no one cares which language you speak

0:17

as long as you can deliver information

0:19

and people can comprehend it that's all

0:21

it matters now here comes the

0:23

interesting part when I was a kid

0:24

growing up in a world where mandering

0:26

was the main language I found learning

0:28

English to be quite challenging but it's

0:30

not really about the environment you can

0:32

argue that folks who grow up in the

0:34

English speaking countries tend to speak

0:36

English very well which is not true just

0:38

like I don't consider myself very good

0:40

at speaking mening either and I've met

0:42

plenty of people who grew up in Taiwan

0:44

um lived their entire lives in Taiwan

0:46

never once setting foot outside and yet

0:49

they speak pretty impressive English so

0:51

that's when I realized learning a new

0:53

language is not really about where you

0:55

are physically it's really about where

0:57

you want to be where you aspire to be

1:00

just like some of my friends who have

1:01

been in the US or Canada for so many

1:03

years and yet they still struggle with

1:05

English and today I'm going to share

1:07

some ideas on how you can level up your

1:09

English skills particularly the speaking

1:11

part which in my opinion might be the

1:13

most challenging part to be decent at

1:15

now don't get me wrong my English is

1:17

just okay like it to me it's just a

1:19

language that I somehow need to use it

1:20

every day to just get through life and

1:22

if I get a pick I would rather speak in

1:24

Mandarin for the rest of my life why

1:26

because Mandarin with all of its

1:28

dialects and variation

1:30

is actually a very beautiful language

1:32

plus I would argue it's probably 10

1:34

times more complex to learn the English

1:36

which just makes super cool to speak now

1:38

here comes the secret to become better

1:41

at speaking English just try to talk to

1:43

yourself I remember when I first landed

1:45

in Canada my English was barely

1:47

understandable like it was so bad

1:49

especially after I got into college it

1:51

was kind of embarrassing because you

1:52

know I was this introverted awkward

1:55

Asian guy who couldn't speak English

1:56

well and it was quite hard for me to

1:59

make any friends so I started to talk to

2:01

myself a lot actually because of doing

2:03

that it removes the self-consciousness I

2:06

could try to express myself without any

2:08

filters and practice as if I was

2:10

conversing with another person and that

2:12

turned out to be working pretty well for

2:14

me especially sometimes I would just

2:15

record myself when you listen to your

2:17

own speaking your own recording you can

2:19

quickly identify and rectify the

2:21

mistakes and over time you will just

2:23

naturally learn and adapt faster because

2:25

you're directly in your own feedback

2:27

loop I am an introverted person so I I

2:29

don't really enjoy talking to people but

2:32

it has been working pretty well for me

2:33

for many years and I still talk to

2:35

myself these days in English actually

2:37

because I'm used to it now if the idea

2:39

of speaking to yourself feels a bit

2:41

strange or if you believe that you could

2:43

benefit from realtime guidance and

2:45

Corrections then Camp could be the ideal

2:47

solution for you and I would like to

2:49

thank camp for sponsoring today's video

2:51

as many of you might already be aware

2:53

cble is an Innovative online platform

2:56

dedicated to English learning from my

2:58

personal experience using in Camp the

3:00

tutors are really spot on they have

3:02

caught and helped me correct tiny

3:04

details in my speech that I didn't even

3:06

notice here you can schedule live video

3:08

sessions with some of the finest native

3:10

English speaking tutors available now

3:12

let me just show you how straightforward

3:14

it is to book a oneon-one session with a

3:16

tutor and begin practicing your English

3:18

speaking right away all right first what

3:20

you want to do is go to cy.com and over

3:23

here you can see a list of tutors that

3:24

you can pick from and what I really like

3:26

about Campell is you can select the

3:27

category for example I'm an engineer so

3:29

I can practice with someone who has you

3:31

know engineering background and for

3:33

example if you're looking to improve

3:34

your tofo skill you can just click on

3:36

tofo and then it will filters a list of

3:38

tutors based on their background for you

3:40

and there's another cool feature I like

3:41

to show you is the online tab so over

3:43

here you can actually see a list of

3:45

tutors who actually online and you can

3:47

just click on call and you able to

3:49

connect to a tutor right away without

3:50

having to wait or schedule for a time

3:52

this way you don't really have to

3:53

schedule ahead of time and it works

3:55

pretty well for people like me with a

3:57

very packed calendar and also you can

3:59

just filter by the accent if you like

4:00

someone with the British accent you can

4:02

just click on that and it will show you

4:03

all the tutors with the British accent

4:05

and of course you can filter by the

4:07

lesson level there's another feature

4:08

that's pretty cool is that after you're

4:10

done with your session you can go to the

4:12

history and you can see all your

4:13

previous sessions here and you can click

4:15

on any one of them and just watch the

4:17

playback and review it you can come back

4:19

and do this at any given time which is

4:20

pretty useful now I have a lesson coming

4:22

up so let's join the session so with

4:25

some common bu idioms in business MH can

4:28

I ask you to to read each of these

4:31

sentences and just see how you feel

4:34

about the idioms if you're familiar with

4:36

all of the idioms or if there are any

4:38

that are confusing sure sure we needed

4:40

to raise a million dollars invest in the

4:42

marketing plan unfortunately we came out

4:44

short God it came out short um it means

4:47

that you were supposed to raise or you

4:49

wanted to raise a million but you did

4:51

not and you raised a certain amount

4:53

that's below a million something like

4:55

that that's correct Jack took a low

4:57

paying job at a large firm just to get a

5:00

foot in the door the the one thing I

5:02

really like about idioms is that it

5:04

builds a picture in your mind yep of of

5:07

these things so to get a foot through

5:09

the door often with business or with

5:12

anything else um around us we say you

5:15

know there's a door open for this and

5:17

perhaps I can get in here or perhaps I

5:19

can often they say the door starts

5:21

closing when when the opportunity starts

5:24

slipping away and you're like okay I

5:26

might not be able to do this so to get a

5:28

foot in the door it's like you're you're

5:30

jamming your foot in there before it

5:32

closes so you can just get in and and

5:35

deal with the rest later so let's talk

5:37

about accents I've got one you probably

5:39

got one too I know a lot of people are

5:41

working really hard to just try to get

5:43

rid of it maybe they're just trying to

5:45

pretend to be American or British and

5:47

you know thinking that's cool especially

5:49

in Asian culture the society often

5:52

perpetuates this misleading notion that

5:54

being born in America or maybe some

5:56

Western countries is associated with a

5:59

higher Social social status or maybe a

6:01

wealthier family background which is

6:02

completely accents are

6:04

beautiful you really shouldn't be

6:06

envious of other people who speak

6:07

English with American accent and call

6:09

themselves accent free the monotonic way

6:12

of speaking a language is just plain

6:14

boring accents are what make a language

6:16

rich and vibrant imagine you're living

6:18

in a city where everyone is wearing the

6:20

same outfit the same hairstyle the same

6:23

everything sounds pretty boring doesn't

6:25

it I wouldn't want to live in a city

6:26

like that I'll probably just move out so

6:28

yeah you should be happy that you have

6:29

an accent and you're different from a

6:31

lot of people in fact you should

6:32

probably focus on the correctness and

6:34

practicality of speaking English as

6:36

opposed to worry about you know your

6:38

accent which is probably the least of

6:40

your concern and has nothing to do with

6:42

whether you speak good English or Not by

6:44

the way cem has recently introduced a

6:46

new learning format the group classes

6:49

the beauty of this group session is that

6:50

they provide you with the opportunity to

6:52

not only learn for a native tutor but

6:55

also interact with fellow students it's

6:57

pretty much like studying abroad except

6:59

you get to experience it all from the

7:00

comfort of your own home personally I

7:02

quite like these group lessons because

7:04

they take me back to my school days and

7:06

what really sets camply aart is the

7:08

option to select tutors based on share

7:11

interest for example if you're keen on

7:13

enhancing your English in a professional

7:15

business contacts you can choose a tutor

7:17

who specializes in business in my case I

7:19

managed to find a tutor from the tech

7:21

industry so we had plenty to discuss

7:23

which really made learning English so

7:24

much more engaging and enjoyable so yeah

7:27

if you want to improve English I will

7:28

challenge you to speak to yourself spend

7:30

maybe like 10 15 minutes a day before

7:32

you go to bed record it and listen back

7:34

to it and now you have access to tools

7:36

like C GPT which can tell you exactly

7:39

how to structure your sentence correctly

7:41

using common phrases and edms if you're

7:43

not sure what to talk to yourself about

7:45

uh here's what I would recommend imagine

7:47

you own a YouTube channel and I'm sure

7:49

there's something in life that you like

7:50

to share with other people it can be

7:52

anything or as simple as what's

7:53

interesting or popping up today talk

7:55

about what happened today or talk about

7:57

a business idea that you want to share

7:59

with your audience and the beauty of

8:00

doing this is you don't have to worry

8:02

about what people think of you you can

8:03

just focus on yourself and express your

8:05

ideas and thoughts just be confident and

8:08

don't be afraid of making any mistakes

8:10

and take your time to really think

8:11

through the words and phrases that you

8:13

want to use all right that would do for

8:14

me and if you find this video helpful

8:16

you know you can just smash that like

8:18

button because it will only take you a

8:19

quarter of a second but it did cost cem

8:22

a lot of money to sponsor this video so

8:24

yeah please go check them out right now

8:26

kembley is generously offering a
